[edit]Tymek, do you deny that Expulsion took place? -- Matthead Discuß 18:28, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
- Matthead, you know too well that this question is stupid. Wilimowski left Upper Silesia on his own, nobody forced him to leave Katowice, he did it because he wanted. Unlike other players from Upper Silesia, he was not allowed to return because he played for Nazi Germany national team, not because he signed the Volksliste and was in the Wehrmacht. This was regarded as a treason in the 1945 Poland, expulsion has nothing to do with it. Tymek (talk) 14:26, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Ernest vs Ernst
[edit]User Matthead singlehandedly moved the article from Ernest Wilimowski to Germanized version of Ernst Willimowski. Could you please explain this move? I have a copy of Wilimowski's autograph and he clearly signed himself as Ernest. Tymek (talk) 20:54, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
- OK, now I got it. This is the photo of his tomb. Now we know how his name should be spelled [1]/ Tymek (talk) 04:53, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
1942?
[edit]It states that the only international match he ever played in Bytom wearing either Polish or German jersey occured in 1942. This is strange, the war was in full swing, do you really think they would be playing international matches during such a dangerous times? Norum 00:02, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
- It´s true. Germany continued to play another four internationals later that same year. The end of that came in November 1942. SpVggLieth (talk) 12:15, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Meeting with the future pope
[edit]The episode from Wilimowski's meeting with Karol Wojtyła is deleted. Wilimowski has claimed that he met Wojtyla a few months before the outbreak of the war during a trip to the High Tatras, Wojtyla had been there as a young chaplain with a group of altar boys. But this is obviously a fairy tale, because Wojtyla was only 19 years old at the time, he became a priest only in 1946, and by then Wilimowski had long since left Poland. Requested move 11 March 2022
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: no consensus. Once the sockpuppet !votes have been discounted, there's clearly no agreement here. No prejudice against speedy renomination (by a non-sockpuppet, of course) if further research clears away some of the uncertainty. Ernst Wilimowski → Ernest Wilimowski – Per: the name in lead, the name in infobox, much greater popularity of searching a footballer under "Ernest" than "Ernst" (per trends.google). 178.235.203.26 (talk) 08:49, 11 March 2022 (UTC) — Relisting. - Comment While Wil(l)imowski undoubtly more recognisable person in Poland (he is more famous in Poland beause of he played only for Poland at FIFA World Cup and at first World Cup for Poland he scored four goals in lost match against Brazil, we can find that in pageviws on the Wikipedias) then he is in also quite recognisable Germany. German version Ernst Willimowski also is notable name. He was teammate of famous German footballer: Fritz Walter who was awarded by UEFA Jubilee Awards (source:[2]; so I will remain neutral on that, perhaps WP:Criteria could help. I will try ping User:Nihil novi who sometimes discuss translation of Polish names. Dawid2009 (talk) 18:14, 12 March 2022 (UTC)
- Note: This discussion has been included in WikiProject Football's list of association football-related page moves. GiantSnowman 13:02, 13 March 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose - sources refer to him as Ernst Willimowski (e.g. this) or Ernst Wilimowski (e.g. this), not 'Ernest'. GiantSnowman 13:05, 13 March 2022 (UTC)
- Comment You haven't shown here that Ernst is more appropriate. Only that some sources state his name and surname this way. But according to google.trends - Ernest is more popular. 178.235.203.26 (talk) 20:30, 13 March 2022 (UTC)
Comment Lead and title also indicate it's Ernest. Atlantico 000 (talk) 09:34, 15 March 2022 (UTC)Struck as blocked as a sockpuppet of nominator

Support per nom, good points. Soorma221 (talk) 13:33, 3 April 2022 (UTC)Struck as blocked as a sockpuppet of nominator- Support A couple of the different language wiki's have Ernst, but most have Ernest, which certainly seems more common. Govvy (talk) 07:50, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
- The use on other language wikipedias is irrelevant here. Andrewa (talk) 16:27, 17 April 2022 (UTC)
- 25% support - some sources have the extra e, some don't and, as GS says, there are others which has his surname spelt with two l's stuck together. There are also plenty of occurrences which has his surname spelt that way in the article I see. Not quite sure which title it should actually be due to the inconsistency in sources. :/ Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 20:30, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose for now but would not object to yet another relisting. This is a mess, and needs more research. Watch this space. Andrewa (talk) 16:02, 17 April 2022 (UTC)
Some research on names
[edit]Lots that could be said. This is to provide links and data. Some of this is relevant to the RM above, but it is cluttered enough as is. The socks do not help. Anything relevant to the RM and helpful to the closer should go into the RM section, and nothing else. Some of it will be here too. It doesn't hurt to have it in both places. It does hurt to have it in the RM unless it is relevant.
