where is a comparison table ?

Agreed -- I was hoping to find a table showing the screen size of various models (specifically I wanted to know which models have 4.7" screens). Kevink707 (talk) 15:07, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

Correct Operating System support table for iPhone 4S and 5

Apple released iOS 9.3.6 for iPhone 4S and iOS 10.3.4 for iPhone 5. These are reflected on their respective iOS 9/10 pages, but not in the OS support table here.

Change "iOS 9.3.5" to "iOS 9.3.6" in the final OS column for the iPhone 4S row. Change "iOS 10.3.3" to "iOS 10.3.4" in the final OS column for the iPhone 5 row. [1]

"Minimum operating system support lifespan"

Just wanted to let you guys know that this OS support table is completely inane. What the hell Operating system support/Lifespan/min column tracks, why it's in bold and what does "> 0 months" value means for iphone XS? 2604:4080:1035:85F0:D488:BFAD:938B:FE71 (talk) 18:04, 29 September 2019 (UTC)

apple has the best product support of any tech company out there (factory reset by internet, even for devices a decade or more old): all of there devices are still working. also: most old devices still inter-operate with the newest OS and devices. there customer service is un-rivaled

only a troll from a competing company would make such a claim as "not supported" without showing evidence of a failed unit — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:143:400:547B:E9A9:7B:655B:D7F (talk) 00:45, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

All is not Swell !

Apple is not alone in the "swelled battery issue", infact samsung was stung, also microsoft surface, every thin device has been broken by them.

The battery swells putting immense pressure on the glass - by 3 yr time the pressure is extremely high and any "gentle drop" on edge will cause a crack not due to the glass (which is amazingly tough and thick for a light weight product), but due to EXTREME pressures that cannot be seen until after the drop causes the latches to allow the screen to bow out. You'd think you'd see it bend out - but due to the clamping it will not be seen until dropped and an edge crack appears.

It happens with all phone and laptop batteries from any mfg Not Just Apple and is only a matter of time. About 3 yr. If you think you didn't get a defective battery you are fooling yourself reading propaganda.

Google China has blocked all news about fixing other than to order a new battery from china (same people who create the problem battery). Go figure.

I have found using a pin head (carefully) to puncture the battery to let out the gasses does work, despite a huge effort by china to deny everywhere on the web such a thing could work. Also: many articles suggest the swollen batteries are not due to gas inflation: but they are. Other articles suggest that you will be shocked and create a fire if you do not do as they say. I fixed mine (popped the bubble) while the phone was on and lit. I see no change in battery status: still works fine. With a $3 scredriver and a few minutes my cell will last another (year or so) till i'm ready to upgrade. The screen does not fit "perfect" but sits down pretty well. I can't say i was "very careful" i might have puncture a layer of battery film btw: but i suggest you NOT do that for obvious cautious reasons. There were no sparks or fire by simply letting the air out: no.

I remind the doubters that most batteries are packaged in CARDBOARD (ie, including dewalt and makita tools) - these can breath through the cardboard you see.

I've left this note because "big media" is so good at blocking the news and propagandizing I think it deserves to be shown in public.

All is well that ends swell. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:143:400:547B:E9A9:7B:655B:D7F (talk) 01:02, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Operating system support - Lifespan

The meaning of the columns "Lifespan min. / max." in the table "Operating system support" cannot be understood at first glance. I would recommend adding a legend below the table. Similarly, Lifespan refers to the time period during which Apple provides software updates. The min is the time period for a device purchased on the last, and max is the time period for a device purchased on the first official day of sale. In my opinion, Lifespan is not applicable either, since the devices are still alive, they just don't get support anymore. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.79.188.213 (talk) 10:34, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

Splitting proposal

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

This article is already too long, and will get even longer as more iPhones are released over time, adding to the problem. To make to easier to read, it should be split into "iPhone" and "iPhone Max". iPhone Max should be a collection of Apple's "plus" and "max" phones while iPhone should focus on the main phones. the ultraUsurper (talk) 08:54, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

I think this would serve to only further confuse people, especially since there are "Plus" and "Max" models. If the article is too bulky, then we should take some info out. Each iPhone already has its own article, so I propose taking out things that have to do with specific iPhones, rather than info that can be said about several or all iPhones. For instance, the introduction section talks about hardware changes for each new iPhone when that information could just go on their own articles and just be briefly alluded to. Katabatic03 talk 00:25, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
I understand what you mean, and I agree, but the article will nevertheless keep expanding as iPhone models keep getting released, and if even if we shorten the page, the page will continue to get longer and harder to read, and we eventually have to split it. If we do split it, we could put a tag on the iPhone page saying something like for the plus or max models, please visit iPhone Max to not confuse people. But we shall see what happens. the ultraUsurper (talk) 04:24, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
  • Opposed Very little of the content of this article is solely dedicated to iPhone Max. There's a lot of room to trim content if VERYLONG is a problem here, but the proposed split is arbitrary and will make little difference to this article's length. The draft article shows this pretty clearly, having nearly no actual content and just a list of announcement and release dates for various models of Max. This remains the main topic and must mention in some capacity all models and lines. This is not a valid size fork proposal, and it's unclear if "iPhone Max line" has enough dedicated independent sourcing on it's own. The AFC decline of the draft is spot on. -- ferret (talk) 11:37, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
  • Opposed Max and Plus models are just larger version of models, technically they are same, except screen. iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4, 5, 5s, 5c, SE, SE 2 and X do not even have Plus/Max versions. Article about Plus/Max will have no sense and will be deleted. Jack Pomi (talk) 09:17, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose for reasons above. I do think the intro is too long, and am in the process of thinking about a new version. I don't think we need to list all the version models. Blythwood (talk) 16:41, 27 June 2020 (UTC)

Second Splitting Proposal

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Since the last splitting proposal failed, i believe to have come up with a more relevant split. Sections based on the "S", "C" and "R" models of the iPhone, such as the iPhone 3GS, 4S, 5S, 5C, 6S, XS and XR can be split into a separate article. Since these models of the iPhone recycled the design of previous models and then introduced something big, such as the App Store on the 3GS which has the same design as the 3G, Siri on the 4S, which had the same design as the 4, Touch ID on the 5S, which had a similar design to the 5, the 5C, Apple's first attempt at creating an affordable iPhone, came in various different colours, the 6S, which had the same design as the 6, introduced 3D Touch, etc. Since this is a bigger split than the previous proposal, and one that makes sense, I think this split should be done. If it is done, to avoid confusion, we could add a template at the top of the iPhone page saying - "For the S models, go to 'insert page name here'". the ultraUsurper (talk) 03:14, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

@Calidum: As more iPhone models are released, the article will continue to expand and the only way to prevent that from happening is a split, and this is the most sensible split that i can think of AstraUsurper (talk) 03:51, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

I am going to create a splitting discussion on this article in contrast of the previous two discussions which specified names and topics for the split articles, while the purpose of this discussion is to try to generate a proper topic for the two (or more) split articles since i think that most people agree that the article should be split, as if i specify a proposed name and topic for the split articles, it will be taken down by people who disagree. So if anyone has any ideas for the topics, names and number of the split articles, please feel free to mention them here. Pleat2 (talk) 17:33, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Redrafted intro

Hi all. As I said above, I think it's legitimate to say the intro has become too long, and probably goes into too much detail listing individual models rather than covering the topic synoptically. Here's a redraft: keen to see what people think.

"The iPhone is a line of touchscreen-based smartphones designed and marketed by Apple Inc. that use Apple's iOS mobile operating system. The first-generation iPhone was announced by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs on January 9, 2007. Since then Apple has periodically released new iPhone models and iOS updates. of November 1, 2018, more than 2.2 billion iPhones had been sold.

The iPhone's user interface is built around a multi-touch screen with a virtual keyboard. The iPhone connects to cellular networks or Wi-Fi. An iPhone can make calls, browse the web, take pictures, play music and send and receive emails and text messages. Since the iPhone's laAsunch further features have been added, including larger screen sizes, shooting video, waterproofing and the ability to install third-party mobile apps through an app store, as well as accessibility support. Up to 2017, iPhones used a layout with a single button on the front panel that returns the user to the home screen. Since 2017, more expensive iPhone models have switched to a nearly bezel-less front screen design with app switching activated by gesture recognition.

The first-generation iPhone was described as "revolutionary" and a "game-changer" for the mobile phone industry and subsequent models have also garnered praise. The iPhone has been credited with popularizing the smartphone and slate form factor, and with creating a large market for smartphone apps, or "app economy". As of January 2017, Apple's App Store contained more than 2.2 million applications for the iPhone.

The iPhone is one of the two largest smartphone platforms in the world alongside Google's Android operating system, forming a large part of the luxury market. The iPhone has generated large profits for Apple, making it one of the world's most valuable publicly traded companies."

Extremely bloated infobox in mobile view

On the mobile website of this article the infobox is extremely long and bloated because of all the CPU/display/connectivity etc. info it lists for each iPhone. In the Models section... Change iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini to not bold as neither are flagship models. 205.132.171.177 (talk) 17:03, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Not done. The precedent from last year seems to be to keep all of the latest generation bolded. The iPhone 11 was bolded along with the iPhone 11 Pro models, therefore, we should keep the precedent with all the iPhone 12 models being bolded. Herbfur (talk) 18:00, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

This is the 4th year in a row that Apple has released a mid-range and flagship phone at the same time.
2017 - 8 and X
2018 - Xr and Xs
2019 - 11 and 11 Pro
2020 - 12 and 12 Pro

205.132.171.177 (talk) 20:03, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

That's the whole point. The precedent on earlier versions of this article in this situation has all of the models of the latest generation bolded, higher end or not. Therefore, we should stick with the precedent. Herbfur (talk) 22:06, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
If you look back in the revision history to the previous times you mentioned, the precedent has always been to bold all of the models. Herbfur (talk) 22:10, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
That's not what flagship means. It means the top-of-the-line. iPhone 12 is not top of the line, iPhone mini is even further down the lineup.
You are making the argument that because you drive a Mercedes E-Class you drive the flagship. A-Class is the base model, C-Class & E-Class are mid-range and S-Class is the flagship. Same thing here, iPhone SE is the base model; Xr, 11 & 12 are all mid-range, 12 Pro is the flagship.
Perhaps if you don't understand what flagship means, you should skip this and let someone else review it. 205.132.171.177 (talk) 22:39, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Inaccurate Pricing for iPhone 12

The pricing listed is inaccurate for the 12 and 12 mini. Those phones are only reduced by $30 to reach those prices IF the user gets them through AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile, as the carriers are slightly subsidizing the price of those phones. I think this should be showing the MSRP of the phones, or some sort of disclaimer should be added if the prices aren't updated on the Wikipedia site to reflect this.

The location I'm thinking of is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone#History_and_availability for the "iPhone 12 / 12 Mini" line.

Add iPhone SE (3rd) specifications to the table on the top right of the page using the same information on the iPhone SE (3rd generation) Wikipedia page (including info like release date, SoC, etc.): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_SE_(3rd_generation)

For example, add "SE (3rd): March 18, 2022" under the Release date section, and so on.

It appears that the iPhone SE (3rd) is added to other parts of the page where you would expect to see it already, however I did not look for missing iPhone SE (3rd) references in depth! Namdude0373 (talk) 19:56, 16 April 2022 (UTC)

Trimming infobox

Hi all. I've been looking at this site on mobile and I've found that the infobox is very tough for mobile readers because it lists so much. I was thinking of trimming it down or putting in collapsibles. How would people feel about this? The information is in articles for individual phones, so it's not a huge loss. Blythwood (talk) 16:37, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

Agree - it’s the longest infobox I’ve ever seen on the mobile version of Wikipedia. Lots of info that should just be in the individual models’ articles. 2A00:23C7:B285:5801:E829:EB62:E4A3:CCD9 (talk) 20:41, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
It is unnecessarily long, and it's because per Template talk:Collapsible list while the content is collapsed on the desktop version, the mobile version of Wikipedia doesn't support the collapsed feature like that so it's all displayed by default. I'm going to try to remove some of the content that's already listed in the respective articles (for example we don't need the mass of the iPhone 12 when it's listed on that article instead). - Aoidh (talk) 20:55, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

in the supported os release table, it is logical to change no to not applicable for older os releases and newer devices, so in the source, changed na to n/a. also added a clarifying for the partial ios support of iphone 3G.

Splitting proposal

I propose that iPhone be split into a separate page called List of the Apple iPhone. The content of the current page can be split to a new article. I already have a draft ready if i get enough split votes. ~~~~ SMBMovieFan (talk) 23:57, 14 October 2022 (UTC) Blocked sockpuppet. Nythar (💬-🎃) 23:37, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

Isn't that the same as List_of_iOS_and_iPadOS_devices#iPhone?
I'd support moving the tables out to the relevant articles (the one I link to above, and iOS version history).
I overall think that the split-off articles related to the Mac or iPhone (or anything within the purview of WP:WikiProject Apple Inc. are horrendous: too long, hard to read, too many tables, irrelevant info, and a host of WP:NOT breaches. They've dump-alls that few are likely interested in reading or editing, so splits to those articles should be accompanied by WP:BOLD removals and cleanup. DFlhb (talk) 19:24, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
I also support moving the tables to reduce redundancy. I think the table under iPhone#Models is redundant because List_of_iOS_and_iPadOS_devices covers everything with a lot of extra data above these. I think it can be deleted with no issue. LinuxPower (talk) 22:36, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
I moved that table to List of iOS and iPadOS devices since it was more detailed than what was on there. I kept one table, which I think is necessary, and removed the cruft. DFlhb (talk) 03:13, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
Thank you!
Tho I miss the Template:IPhone_Supported_OS_release, it could be displayed somewhere where it's the most related information. LinuxPower (talk) 05:44, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
It looks neat aesthetically, but doesn't really contribute to the article and is too wide (requiring horizontal scrolling, which we should avoid).
I put it in iOS version history, but someone removed it again, asying that it's too specific to the iPhone. I think if someone made an iPad version too, they could both be included there. DFlhb (talk) 05:56, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
I removed an iPhone specific table from there but that was a different one. Also I created the iPad version too, so both can be included there. LinuxPower (talk) 06:52, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
Oh, you're right, I didn't notice it was you, and it was indeed a different table that was far less relevant to software. I see you've just added them both, looks great! DFlhb (talk) 07:13, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

OS support table redundancy

Link to the revision I'm commenting on.

There's major redundancy between the "Operating system support" table, and the "Supported OS release" table, and minor redundancy between both of them and the "Models" section. Also, the "Operating system support" table seems a little cluttered and hard to parse IMO; and the the "Supported OS release" table is unsustainable due to its format, since it'll stretch off the screen by next year.

I think we could delete the first one, since the stuff in "Models" seems like enough; those pages already contain price, date release, date discontinued, etc. I don't want to delete without consensus, but it's a little hard to parse, and frankly a little ugly.

The second table is not sustainable in terms of width; but looks beautiful, and is very readable; the information it contains is also useful. I propose we just trim off the left in upcoming years, to keep it fitting. DFlhb (talk) 19:41, 3 October 2022 (UTC)

The table also seems to be inconsistent when listing support periods. In reality the iPhone 6 has received 7 years 11 months, when calculating from the time it was sold in September 2014 through the latest update released August 2022. And that's assuming there won't be any further updates. 2601:192:100:7670:695A:6510:5977:5A66 (talk) 04:53, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
Whether a version is currently supported or not (blue vs green vs grey), and how long it's been supported, also seem like WP:OR; good point. DFlhb (talk) 05:07, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

Longevity

Propose a top-level "longevity" section, which would regroup anything related to repairability, long-term software update support, e-waste, etc. DFlhb (talk) 23:03, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

Sale lifespans are all incorrect, no?

Is this something other than the time between on-sale and discontinued?

Just to pick one - iPhone 11, on sale September 20, 2019 and discontinued September 7, 2022 is not an “amount of time the device was sold” of 8 months. It’s nearly 3 years.

They look like they may be the gap between end of sale and end of support (or today, if still supported), but that’s not “amount of time the device was sold”.

Having a sub-heading of Support under a broader heading of Support is also very confusing.

If the column is supposed to be the duration of support after the device was discontinued, significant rewording is needed. 24.154.253.239 (talk) 17:03, 3 June 2023 (UTC)

Resolved
Thanks for the hint! Reason for awkward naming: Some modifiers obviously weren't able to count and therefore weren't able to understand what they are reading and consequently mismodified the table (Their teachers must have told them a long time ago for several times that one day this would happen to them if they do not make their homework properly! ;-). -- ZH8000 (talk) 20:18, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks ZH8000, that's better.
I'm in turn removing the "min" column. Currently-supported phones can't have a "max" lifespan, it's the lifespan-to-date; so removing "min" and renaming "max" to "lifespan" is more accurate. The "min" column's long header also makes the table 225px wider on large displays, and up to 328px taller on small displays since it increases text wrapping in all columns; this'll also compound the height increase of adding future models. ZH8000, you created the table, do you mind?
Also made a number of formatting improvements. DFlhb (talk) 21:04, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
DFlhb (talk · contribs) Actually, I don't agree. I thought this is so obvious that I didn't explain it explicitly. Let me rehearse:
  • maximal support lifespan = current or ended date - released date
  • minimal support lifespan = current or ended date - discontinued date
And since 'discontinued' means that you can not buy it in the store anymore, and the discontinued date vary from model to model, it has to be made explicit also.
I will therefore revert your changes including the format changes, you will have to re-apply them afterwords. Sorry.
PS: If there are formatting problems you should eventually switch you browser ;-) -- ZH8000 (talk) 20:53, 4 June 2023 (UTC)
I know what means, no need to explain. But a maximum that changes every day is no maximum. Still, don't mind keeping the column.
My browser's perfectly fine. I fixed inaccuracies ("June 9, 2008", "late, single update: January 23, 2023", iPhone 12 being colored blue like the iPhone 12 Mini), fixed incorrect links (when two phones are covered by one article, both names should be piped, not just the first name), prevented incorrect text-wrapping (e.g. "12 Mini", "14 Plus" must never wrap), and removed confusing parentheses for "final OS" (which implies that the SE got only iOS 12.4.1, and the iPhone 6 got 12.5.7). No time to fix them again; someone else can do it if they're bothered. DFlhb (talk) 23:13, 4 June 2023 (UTC)

Total sales

We currently use a 2018 statistic in the lede for total sales. If we can update it lets keep it, but if we dont have a newer number, maybe we should remove it is out of date? Jtbobwaysf (talk) 11:12, 26 June 2023 (UTC)

Apple stopped reporting iPhone unit sales in 2018, so there's never going to be an accurate total we can put here – there are just estimates on various sites, they vary quite widely, and there's little if any detail on methodology for their guesses. Therefore, it's the 2018 figure or nothing. Personally, I'm happy with the 2018 figure, perhaps with a note as to why it's old, but wouldn't care if you removed it entirely. — Trey Maturin 11:25, 26 June 2023 (UTC)
