UV degradation

The article has no section on susceptibility to UV radiation. PP rope, in my experience, is not suited to longterm outdoor applications, presumably breaking down by UVB/C. Assuming the black "poly pipe", ubiquitous in Australia, really is PP, its UV resistance must be due to the black filler material, or am I missing something? Carbon black is a very cost effective means of stabilising plastic against UV but I'm not sure if its used in rope. Fillers like that can effect the machanical properties of the plastic because you usualy need to add quite a bit of them. PP will degrade in sunlight (see: Photo-oxidation of polymers) but there are various UV-stabilisers which can be used to prevent degradation. --Project Osprey (talk) 14:11, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think I was suggesting adding a filler to rope; just commenting on its poor UV performance, which merits a sentence or two. Thanks for the link. I thought my chemistry knowledge was OK but what are "reactive oxygen species"? Ozone? Nascent atoms? It's free radical chemistry, which can be confusing even to trained chemists. In this context reactive oxygen species include a few different compounds: peroxy radical (ROO•), which are the most reactive - but also hydroperoxides (ROOH, not to be confused with carboxylic acids) and alkoxy radicals (RO•). Recycling section is really bad...

The recycling section looks like it was written by an eighth grader. Poor grammar, factually incorrect, and cites greenwashing on a plastic packaging company's website. I don't have the time or energy to research and correct it. Salix~Willow (talk) 22:19, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Structure

Can propylene polymerize in such a way that the methyl groups are not on every other carbon atom of the chain? The chain can be divided into groups of two carbon atoms that both came from the same propylene molecule, but theoretically the methyl group could be on either one of the two.
