Blogspots cannot be accepted as valid sources and the other source is not in english, are there any other sources which show this information ?

While in the article there is atleast one english news article (APherald) which supports the current information on the article. Please provide better sources and also explain why the sources already present are wrong ?
Marchoctober (talk) 03:19, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

AP Herald is a dubious tabloid website and has no authenticity while eenadu is the largest circulated Telugu daily newspaper in the entire world. Not even a close contest. Highly recommend adding the eenadu reference 38 to the Telugu Family word in the early life. Pray tell us Marchoctober as to what is the overwhelming evidence that Nadella is a Brahmin.

The following sentence is wrong. B. N. Yugandhar, hailing from Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh, India. Also the following thing: Home town Anantapur District, Andhra Pradesh, India.[3]

Here is the correct sentence: B. N. Yugandhar, hailing from Anantapur District of Andhra Pradesh, India. Home town Anantapur District, Andhra Pradesh, India.

Here is the proof and explanation:

Satya Nadella's father, B.N. Yugandhar hails from 'Bukkapuram village in Yellanur Mandal of Anantapur District, Rayala Seema Region, Andhra Pradesh state, India

His mother and father

Currently the article states, "Nadella was born in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India, in a Telugu family to an IAS officer, B. N. Yugandhar, from Bukkapuram village in Anantapur District, Andhra Pradesh. who was a member of the Planning Commission during 2004–2009 under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh."

1. Is it normal for English Wikipedia that a person is born "to" the father, and with no mention of the mother? RenniePet (talk) 06:21, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

@RenniePet: Sometimes this happens when one parent is a public person, but the other is not in public life. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 16:23, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

2. Are the father's later exploits, long after Mr. Nadella had moved to the USA, really relevant? I'd suggest simply removing the phrase "who was a member of the Planning Commission during 2004–2009 under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.". Or at least make it a separate sentence in parenthesis - except that Wikipedia style discourages use of parenthesis, right? RenniePet (talk) 06:21, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Manipal or Mangalore?

This article says his EE degree is from Mangalore University. Sumana Harihareswara 15:38, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

It seems according to Mangalore_University#History that there was some transfer of Mangalore University colleges: " In 1993, the Manipal associated colleges were transferred to Manipal University." Maybe that's the reason? We should probably go with what Microsoft and BBC say as "Mangalore University" -- Fuzheado | Talk 18:22, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

CEO section needs expansion/rewrite

In my opinion, the CEO of Microsoft section of this article needs a re-write. He's been on the job for 8 months. I visited this article to read up on the types of changes Satya Nadella is making to Microsoft, what his leadership vision is, what investors think of his strategy, and what direction the company is going in. Instead I get 5 paragraphs of feminism and 0 paragraphs about what he is actually doing at the company. I would suggest reducing the feminism down to 1-2 paragraphs, then adding 3+ paragraphs about the actions that Nadella is taking as CEO. What is his vision for Windows 10? What acquisitions has Microsoft made under his leadership (Nokia, Minecraft, etc.)? Is Microsoft going to continue on this tablet-centric path that Ballmer embarked them on or is Nadella steering them back toward the traditional PC market? – Novem Lingvae (talk) 19:39, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

India born

An editor recently reverted my edit "India-born, naturalized American" in the lead, with edit summary "not essential for notability" or words to that effect. This mention of country of birth, is in fact par for the lead. See Saul Bellow (who left Quebec for Chicago at age nine), Albert Einstein (who renounced his German citizenship at age 17), V. S. Naipaul (who left Trinidad at age 17). In Nadella's case, his American citizenship (which is mentioned in the lead, and less relevant to his notability than his previous Indian-) is relatively recent. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 01:49, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

Current WP:Manual of Style/Biographies disagrees "Similarly, previous nationalities or the country of birth should not be mentioned in the opening sentence unless they are relevant to the subject's notability". Other articles do not set a precedent (WP:Other stuff exists). His birth location is totally irrelevant to his notability. Nationality is explicitly listed as part of the basic description. Birth info is in the adjacent infobox and well described in article. Birth location does not belong in first paragraph of the lede. Geraldo Perez (talk) 02:22, 27 April 2014 (UTC)
Even if I were to take the MOS, written by your average amateur Wikipedian and subject to constant change, as etched in stone, why is Nadella's Indian citizenship not relevant to his notability. How did you divine that? It is not his birth location, but the 22 years he spent in India getting educated at an Indian elementary, middle- and high school, then at a government subsidized university, then another five years as an Indian student in the US, and another ten years as an Indian citizen working in the US with an H1 visa, and subsequently with a Green card before he became a US citizen. So, all in all, approximately 37 years of his 45 or 46 years have been spent as an Indian citizen. Again, how have you divined that those years are not relevant to his notability. After all, had he not become a US citizen (i.e. remained a permanent resident) MOS, if taken as gospel truth, would have compelled us to write, "Satya Nadella is an Indian software engineer, ...," with no mention of the US, thereby somehow implying the his US years are not relevant to his notability. I am suggesting that the folks at MOS have not thought deeply about this issue, and they can safely be ignored. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 14:42, 27 April 2014 (UTC)
This particular part of the MOS has been there since October 2009 [3] after a discussion (aka people thought deeply about this issue) and the intent, if not the exact wording, has been stable since then. Previous to that birth location was normally there, after that point, not. The change in the example in the MOS when the edit was made makes the intent explicitly clear and well-covers this exact same issue.
This article was created January 13, 2013 and as it was not deleted at that time presume it met basic notability requirements for a wikipedia article. He had no notable activities until he became a senior executive of Microsoft. He was an American national at that point in time. He had activities, but no notable activities as an Indian national, no different than any other random software engineer, mid level executive working for a large company. What he did before he became notable belongs in a well-writen bio article but would not in of themselves be sufficient to support one. Saying in the first sentence, where he was born and that he was naturalized as opposed to native born has nothing to do with the reason he is notable now. If he had not gained American citizenship, then yes, he would be described as an Indian business executive. Geraldo Perez (talk) 15:41, 27 April 2014 (UTC)
Here is the sum total of that discussion. There is no consensus at all. In fact, an editor Sssoul says in this edit, "i don't think any 'one size fits all' type solution will be adequate to deal with this - there are times when the country of birth is relevant and times when it isn't; and when it's 'relevant enough' to be mentioned in the lead varies. it needs to be sorted out on an individual basis, by the editors of the idividual articles - not through edit-warring, but not by introducing blanket MoS rulings either."
I looked at your MOS:Biography link as well. The most recent edit there has edit summary, "not consistent with general encyclopedic practice." Well, I'm suggesting this bit of MOS is not always consistent with general encyclopedic practice. Usually, when someone has been born, raised, achieved adulthood, and the age of consent, in one country, and has then emigrated to another, their native country is mentioned in the lead. The first 21 years shape the life. Examples abound in other encyclopedias as well. Here are some comparable biographies (in terms of the age at which the subject arrived in the country of second citizenship and their non-notability at the time of arrival; actually many subjects were younger than Nadella at the age of migration.)
  • Cary Grant's Wikipedia page says, "Cary Grant (born Archibald Alexander Leach; January 18, 1904 – November 29, 1986) was an English stage and Hollywood film actor who became an American citizen in 1942." (CG moved to the US in 1920, aged 16; became a US citizen at age 38.)
  • Cary Grant's Britannica page says, "Cary Grant, original name Archibald Alexander Leach (born January 18, 1904, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England—died November 29, 1986, Davenport, Iowa, U.S.), British-born American film actor whose good looks, debonair style, and flair for romantic comedy made him one of Hollywood’s most popular and enduring stars."
  • Mel Gibson's Britannica page says, "Mel Gibson, in full Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson (born January 3, 1956, Peekskill, New York, U.S.), American-born Australian actor, who became an international star with a series of action-adventure films in the 1980s and later earned acclaim as a director and producer. (MG's family moved to Australia when he was 12.)
  • Arnold Schwarzeneger's Wikipedia page says, "Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (born July 30, 1947) is an Austrian-born American actor, film producer, businessman, investor, writer, philanthropist, former professional bodybuilder and politician. Schwarzenegger served two terms as the 38th Governor of California from 2003 until 2011.page

(AS came to the US at age 21. He had won his first Mr Universe, though, and had a little notability).
  • Indra Nooyi's Britannica page says, "Indra Nooyi, (born Oct. 28, 1955, Madras [now Chennai], India), Indian-born American businesswoman who was instrumental in the lucrative restructuring and diversification of soft-drink manufacturer PepsiCo, Inc.’s brands. Nooyi became CEO of PepsiCo in 2006 and chairman of the board in 2007."
  • Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhas's Britannica page says, "Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, (born October 19, 1910, Lahore, India [now in Pakistan]—died August 21, 1995, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.), Indian-born American astrophysicist who, with William A. Fowler, won the 1983 Nobel Prize for Physics for key discoveries that led to the currently accepted theory on the later evolutionary stages of massive stars." Fowler&fowler«Talk» 17:12, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

I will, btw, soon reopen that discussion on the MOS:Biography talk page. I want to first examine some other pages. Thanks. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 00:06, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Since this seems to be a much bigger issue in India-related biographies, i.e. there is a relatively large number of Indians who have moved to the US or Britain after their basic college education in India, and in some cases later in life, I will post in WT:INDIA first. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 02:09, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
Don't try to argue with anyone in any Microsoft related pages, despite the fact that "Other stuff exist" actually does work on any other type of page, those arguments to the admins of these pages will only befal deaf ears. --Lumia930uploader (talk) 08:33, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

Removed controversy section

I did this edit and removed the controversy section:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Satya_Nadella&type=revision&diff=745796468&oldid=745740772

This incident is just way out of proportions. He gave a silly remark, and after realising it was silly he offered an apology. Case closed. If we are going to use that much space on a tiny incident like this, then the article in total should be some 1,000+ pages in order to give due weight to the rest of the guy's work.

So this is not removed due to lack of sources (seems backed up by good in-line references) and its not because I am against equal pay for females (I am and I do strongly believe any sane person is), but this is just a tiny detail in a long career. Nothing about S.N's performance as the CEO of Microsoft yet?

Hi I noticed that even though it's been over 6 months since Satya Nadella became the CEO there's nothing here about how he is doing (professionally ofc) in his capacity. Have there been no notable comments about this in reliable sources (e.g analyses of his decisions, etc) yet? 83.8.238.36 (talk) 12:04, 27 September 2014 (UTC)Piotrek

By conceding Windows phone and winding down Lumia, he has conceded that Microsoft is going to be a business only company at some point in the future. This was a terrible long term decision because the phone will drive the desktop OS for a lot of people. It would have been better and cheaper to pay the carriers to promote the phones during the ramp up and 2.) Pay top app providers (snap chat) to offer windows phone apps. Also, they really need to focus on doing fewer things better (One drive comes to mind). But at least they have cool new picture viewers every 6 months. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:300B:728:AA00:C12B:D325:82EE:8DBF (talk) 20:40, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

Two edit requests, please

Hi, folks. The article is noticeably lacking in what Nadella actually did during his tenure as CEO. I'm an experienced editor, but have a WP:COI, so I'm reluctant to actually push the writing live myself. Could someone who doesn't have a COI, please do these two things? (Editing this section will show the wiki code that I'm requesting.)

1. (small) in the template {{Infobox person}}, in the Lead (top) of the article, please add the line:

| boards =

2. (substantial) in the Microsoft section, please replace the line:

In the two years that have since passed, Nadella is viewed as having done well,[3] with the Microsoft stock having risen more than 60% since he took over.[4]

with

Nadella changed the company’s direction after becoming CEO. His tenure has emphasized openness to working with companies and technologies with which Microsoft also competes, including Apple Inc.,[5] Salesforce,[6] IBM,[7] and Dropbox.[8] In contrast to previous Microsoft campaigns against the Linux operating system, Nadella proclaimed that "Microsoft ♥ Linux",[9] and in 2016, Microsoft joined the Linux Foundation as a Platinum member.[10]

Under Nadella, Microsoft revised its mission statement to "empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more".[11] In comparison to founder Bill Gates's "a PC on every desk and in every home, running Microsoft software", Nadella says that it is an enduring mission, rather than a temporal goal.[12] His key goal has been transforming Microsoft’s corporate culture into one that values continual learning and growth.[13] He has cited the book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck as inspiration for this philosophy around a "growth mindset".[14]

Nadella's leadership of Microsoft included a series of high profile acquisitions of other companies, to redirect Microsoft's focus. His first major acquisition was of Mojang, a Swedish game company best known for the popular freeform computer building game Minecraft, in late 2014, for $2.5 billion. Minecraft was notably a cross-platform game, with versions running on Apple's iOS mobile devices, and the Sony PlayStation dedicated gaming console, as well as Microsoft's Xbox.[15] He followed in early 2016 by purchasing Xamarin, a company dedicated to software development of applications that would run equally well on Google's Android, Apple's iOS, and Microsoft's Windows operating systems.[16] In June 2016, Nadella bought LinkedIn, the business oriented social networking site. It was the biggest acquisition in Microsoft's history, for $26.2 billion, and underscored Microsoft's commitment to the Web.[17]

In the years since becoming CEO, Nadella is viewed as having done well,[18] with Microsoft stock having risen more than 60% since he took over, and achieving an all-time high.[19][20]

Thank you! (My COI: I'm not a paid editor, but have worked for the company - as an engineer - for 4 months now. I've been a Wikipedian for 11 years.) --GRuban (talk) 19:30, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

Caste

Please do not refer to Nadella's putative caste affiliation in this article unless you can provide a high-quality source that demonstrates him self-identifying the affiliation. It doesn't matter how many sources mention it, if he doesn't say it himself. That's at the heart of WP:BLP, and the same applies to any alleged religious affiliation. - Sitush (talk) 15:50, 23 October 2017 (UTC)

Net worth is backed by reference that doesn't support the claim

Image change

@Sitush, Donner60, ManU0710, Citizen Canine, Dorkface1234, Noy-nac, A145029, BD2412, and CLCStudent: Hi, folks. I'm pinging everyone who's edited this article since March (most were minor edits, so I'm fully expecting many responses like "I have no opinion, I was reverting obvious vandalism!", but I had to start somewhere), to ask a hopefully non-controversial question. Could we change the current infobox photo to this one on the right? Satya Nadella recently released a number of images on https://news.microsoft.com/exec/satya-nadella/ under Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike, and I've uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons. He says he'd prefer this one for the article photo. I think this should be non-controversial, as an equally good photo, but shouldn't just do it myself, since I do work for the company. --GRuban (talk) 17:11, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

I have no opinion, but no objection either. bd2412 T 17:34, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
I double checked the license for these pictures as those seem to be usually locked down but yes, it is tagged correctly. I'd say go for it. Zero Serenity (talk - contributions) 17:39, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
No objection from me. It's a decent photo and up-to-date. - Sitush (talk) 19:35, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
Seems to be a good up-to-date picture. I have no opinion or objection. As you noted, any edits that I had on this page were reversions of vandalism. Donner60 (talk) 03:42, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
Likewise, no objection or meaningful opinion from me. noy-nac (talk) 02:34, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

Seems like a unanimous "no objection". Requesting edit per Wikipedia:Edit requests. --GRuban (talk) 02:53, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

Edit request

As per the chorus of lack of objections above, would someone without a conflict of interest be so kind as to replace the infobox picture with File:Satya smiling-print.jpg ? Thanks! --GRuban (talk) 02:53, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

Done. Not sure about the caption. - Sitush (talk) 03:33, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

I have added the photo as no-one else seems to have. - FormularSumo 11:33, 25 August 2019 (UTC)

Edit Request - editorial slant

This line seems like it has editorial slant:

He led a giant round of layoffs and flattened the organization (getting rid of middle managers)

What I oppose to is "giant", primarily, but also the whole sentence is just lifted from the reference. 2001:4898:80E8:1:E26A:16D1:39DD:E547 (talk) 20:29, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

Hit Fresh

Satya Nadella published "Hit Fresh's second edition on Nov 5th, 2019. The 1st edition is published on 2017. As like the book's name, it suggests it is necessary and healthy to hit refresh, Microsoft is continuing transformation. In this edition Nadella says that, " our customers expect more and if we don't deliver, but our competitors will. This book is about Microsoft's history, success, failures etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vpanu (talkcontribs) 05:15, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

Vpanu, are you suggesting a change or correction to this article? It isn't clear what you're proposing. We do have an article on the book Hit Refresh. Schazjmd (talk) 16:13, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

COI Edit Request

Hello, I am new to the Wikipedia community with a few factual edits (with citations) to suggest for this page. As a Microsoft employee, I have a COI and respectfully request that another community member both review and implement these. Thank you for your consideration.

  • Add: In 2020, Nadella was recognized as Global Indian Business Icon at CNBC-TV18's India Business Leader Awards in Mumbai.[4]
  • Addition + edit: In 2019, he was named Financial Times Person of the Year and Fortune magazine Businessperson of the Year.[5][6]
  • Addition: In 2018, he was a Time 100 honoree.[7]
  • Consider removing reference to Overseas Indian Honour Award given lack of citation and additions above.
  • After Microsoft bio, consider adding Satya’s verified LinkedIn profile[8]
  • As theCUBE and C-SPAN stories on the page are somewhat dated, here are a few current stories to consider: FT op-ed[9]; TIME: The Leadership Brief[10]

AllTheJennifers (talk) 23:59, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi AllTheJennifers, I made the other edits, but not the external links (although I did remove theCube link) per WP:ELNO. Schazjmd (talk) 18:36, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

Citizenship

Nadella is listed as an American citizen (which is correct, of course), but it seems unlikely to me that he'd have given up his Indian citizenship. He was in his twenties before coming to the USA, after all. Is there evidence that he's not both an American citizen and an Indian citizen? James Montgomerie (talk) 11:27, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Indians can't hold dual citizenship under The Citizenship Act, 1955. If he is an American citizen, he better not be Indian too. Or else someone should notify this to Preet Bharara §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 13:12, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
There isn't any information about his citizenship status in the citation given. The Futurist Corporation (talk) 23:52, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
You're right, Futuristcorporation, thanks for pointing it out. I've replaced the reference with a better source. Schazjmd (talk) 00:07, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

MBA in 1997 and other early career information

Referencing here, [1], Nadella's MBA degree was awarded in 1997. I have also seen the 1997 date elsewhere (e.g., [2])

Also the Britannica article references Nadella's early work on Windows NT.

A chronological presentation of Nadella's career at Microsoft would be clearer to me.

We can perhaps put annual compensation data into a table. Summary compensation tables can be found in SEC filings of type DEF 14A such as [3]

I would be pleased to make adjustments in future but for now article is semi-protected.

Ertsthns (talk) 01:35, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

Fixed MBA date. The source for that sentence in the article didn't actually specify a year so the 1996 was unsupported. Schazjmd (talk) 14:03, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
