[edit]Cross of Aviz
[edit]Following his success in succeeding to the throne following the 1383–1385 Portuguese interregnum, King John I of Portugal took the Cross of the Order of Aviz as his heraldic badge, adding it to the coat of arms of Portugal and the according royal flags. King John I enforced the imagery of his position as Grand-Master of the Order of Aviz, lending its name to his newly founded royal house and its cross as his personal charge on the royal arms. This was effected in various ways: by insertion within the bordure, alternating with the castles; more commonly inserted within the shield, and occasionally shown outside the shield with the latter laying over it. The Cross of Aviz is a cross flory vert (a green cross with a fleur-de-lys at the end of each arm)
Armillary sphere
[edit]The armillary sphere has been an important element of Portuguese heraldry since the reign of King Manuel I of Portugal. The armillary sphere became a royal badge for the Portuguese monarchy, apart from being part of the personal standard of King Manuel I. It acts as a supporter to the Coat of arms of Portugal, also present on the current Flag of Portugal.
Owing to the association with King Manuel I and other Aviz monarchs with the Portuguese discoveries, the armillary sphere was commonly used as a symbol representing Portuguese sovereignty across the Portuguese Empire. The symbol was a consistent motif in both Manueline and Neo-Manueline architecture. It also became particularly associated with Colonial Brazil and the subsequent United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves.
An important element of Portuguese heraldry since the 15th century, the armillary sphere was many times used in Portuguese naval and colonial flags, mainly in Brazil. It was a navigation instrument used to calculate distances and represents the importance of Portugal during the Age of Discovery, as well as the vastness of its colonial empire when the First Republic was implemented.

Symbols
[edit]Wyvern
[edit]The traditional symbol and crest of the House of Braganza is a green wyvern, commonly taken to be a dragon,[1][2][3] representing Saint George,[4] patron saint of Portugal.
This symbol can be found in many different monuments in Portugal and Brazil, such as the Monument to the Independence of Brazil in São Paulo and in the palaces of the Imperial family in Rio de Janeiro and Petrópolis. It is famously found atop the Portuguese Crown Sceptre, the Sceptre of the Dragon and the Sceptre of the Emperor of Brazil.
The wyvern is also sometimes used as a supporter in the coat of arms of both the Brazilian and Portuguese branches of the family.
Because of its use in heraldry by the Braganza as the ruling house, and given Pedro IV's link with Porto, a dragon was added to the old coat of arms of the municipality of Porto[1] and is still a part of FC Porto's coat of arms, who are nicknamed "The Dragons".
Curse of the Braganzas
[edit]Since the 17th century, the House of Braganza has allegedly suffered from the Curse of the Braganzas (Portuguese: Maldição dos Braganças). For supposedly mistreating a Franciscan friar, a curse was purportedly placed on King João IV of Portugal, stating that never again would a first-born male of the Braganza Dynasty live long enough to succeed to the throne.[citation needed] Since the reign of King João IV, all first-born Braganza males, with only three exceptions, have died before they had the opportunity to reign as monarch, either in Portugal or Brazil.
Supposed victims of the Curse of the Braganzas:[5]
- Teodósio of Braganza, Prince of Brazil (1634–1653) – First-born son of King João IV of Portugal
- João of Braganza, Prince of Brazil (1688–1688) – First-born son of King Pedro II of Portugal
- Pedro of Braganza, Prince of Brazil (1712–1714) – First-born son of King João V of Portugal
- José of Braganza, Prince of Brazil (1761–1788) – First-born son of Queen Maria I of Portugal & King Pedro III of Portugal
- Francisco António of Braganza, Prince of Beira (1795–1801) – First-born son of King João VI of Portugal
- Miguel of Braganza, Prince of Beira (1820) - First-born son of King-Emperor Pedro I & IV
- Afonso of Braganza, Prince Imperial of Brazil (1845–1847) – First-born son of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil

Genealogical chart of Royal Family of Portugaul
[edit]On the family tree below, the Miguelist branch is clearly identified on the right-hand side while the Liberal Branch from Maria II is on the left with the Brazilian Imperial branch descending from her brother Pedro II in the middle. In 1942 the Miguelist pretender Duarte Nuno of Braganza married Maria Francisca de Orléans e Bragança, a great-granddaughter of Pedro II of Brazil. The current pretender Duarte Pio, Duke of Braganza, is therefore descended from both of the feuding brothers Pedro IV of Portugal and Miguel I of Portugal.
