Fake book?

Hi, is this one of those "fake" books that you were telling me about? People Whose Existence Is Disputed If it can be bought it likely contains Wiki articles, but I am not sure how recent it is or if is ever updated. It is about Category:People whose existence is disputed which I find very interesting though. Davidgoodheart (talk) 12:20, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Yes, Book LLC is one of the junk publishers that packages that kind of material. The "source Wikipedia" on that Amazon page seems clear. It is simply going to be a collection of Wikipedia articles culled from the "People whose existence is disputed" category. Feel free to buy it and confirm. Kuru (talk) 12:28, 11 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the input, I don't think buying it would be any help, since the articles about this are right here to read, but please tell me if this publication and selling process is either legal or a grey area and if the people who do this are likely to be charged with doing this. Davidgoodheart (talk) 10:43, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
Presuming that they adhere to our licensing requirements, it's as legal as any mirror. I would say that it's ethically pretty shady to be packaging material available for free and selling it as a printed book. You can see that many re-sellers don't always mention the source of the material. Kuru (talk) 11:11, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
Excuse me, TP Stalker speaking. I don't defend this non-book, but draw your attention to Gregor Weichbrodt's Dictionary of Non-Notable Artists, which you might enjoy. -- Hoary (talk) 05:39, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing; making minor changes to large bodies of text does not grant you ownership. It was not, in any way, a significant deviation from the published material. That said, the source did not appear to meet our criteria for reliable sourcing. It would be best to simply use your own writing, and ensure that it is closed supported by reliable, third-party materials. Thanks. Kuru (talk) 15:28, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Kuru,

Thank you for your message and for accepting most of the content I added to search marketing (paragraph + citation). I have made a few tens of editing so far including a couple of new pages. I think we both agree that the new content I brought to the search marketing page and the citation supporting it is correct. I understand you didn't approve the link to StoreYa.com because that site sells products. Should the referral be to its blog, would that be ok? I see referals to companies' blogs so I am trying to understand if that is considered ok. Thanks again for guidance. Yarivdror (talk) 14:34, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

It isn't. Please stop adding links to your company. Kuru (talk) 14:41, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

Could you re-visit your edit to that article? You made a bunch of wording changes unrelated to "rmv non-WP:RS", including writing several weird sentence structures and making an incorrect statement about the ingredients of piranha solution, and multiple section reorganizations. There are so many changes, I cannot tell which are actually your RS concerns, which need to be discussed as editorial changes, and which might need to be undone as faulty. DMacks (talk) 14:03, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Ouch - something went crazy there. Reverted myself and will revisit in a sec. Kuru (talk) 14:06, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Issue with Jonathan Paul Cambry being removed as a graphic designer

Hi Kuru, You said there was no indication of Jonathan Paul Cambry being a graphic designer. This was an issue fixed in the fixed if you look in the revision history November 5, 2018 as he was graphic designer of BLUE1647 company clearly on the site at the time. The website may not list current graphic designers right now, but this was very much fixed at the time when member Nick Moyes removed him as graphic designer of BLUE1647 on that date. If he is not currently on the website right now but was very clearly at the time as graphic designer and technology manager of BLUE1647 does this mean he is no longer mean he is a live graphic designer? Here is the link to where this issue was fixed: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jonathan_Paul_Cambry&action=history — Preceding unsigned comment added by BlackCaesar123 (talkcontribs) 03:16, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

That seems pretty tangential and has little to do with his notability. Probably best to keep it sourced and notable graphic designers. Kuru (talk) 03:31, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi Kuru, Thanks for your comment on my talk page about mirrored citations on the Peter Draffin page. Discuss About editing

Hello Karu Sir I always see very external link add in Wikipedia page but when I add link. Why do you remove link? My external link is very usefull.

May you say which type external link support Wikipedia? I want add link because I want learn everything Gulamsarwar269 (talk) 14:51, 19 April 2020 (UTC)

It's possible that a four-month-old blog written in broken English and added by the author to increase their SEO may not be in the best interest of the encyclopedia. If you continue to promote your site here, the link will be blacklisted and your accounts will be blocked. If you would like to contribute, please add material, in your own words, and source it to something that is a reliable reference. That's why we're all here. Kuru (talk) 15:02, 19 April 2020 (UTC)

Tank to reply sir Sir may you full describe what is your meaning of " written in broken English "

And I was edit O'Reilly article without any external link but you revert Gulamsarwar269 (talk) 15:21, 19 April 2020 (UTC)

It means "it is not written very well" - this is important for contributing to the English language Wikipedia, and for describing complex financial topics. Your response above is another example of this; I cannot answer your second question as I cannot understand what you're asking. Neither you or I have ever edited "O'Reilly". Kuru (talk) 15:57, 19 April 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for helping clean up this article. You might like to know that I’ve nominated it for WP:AFD as I don’t believe the deprodding editor has helped to indicate notability. Thanks. Cardiffbear88 (talk) 20:25, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

Add details on how to identify user intents

Thanks for the feedback Kuru. I think I know how to fix the first point - thanks for the suggestion. As for the other point, I'm a bit confused as to how this works since there's already 1 link pointing to a commercial website. How's that different? Cborodescu (talk) 12:08, 30 April 2020 (UTC)

It sounds like you're offering to contribute to the encyclopedia by helping us find and remove spam. That's great! You can get started by reviewing the material at Wikipedia:Spam, even the specific section on WP:OTHERSPAM. Kuru (talk) 12:14, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
Ahm ... seems I can't find the content I've added ... trying to figure out the intricacies of Wikipedia and as much as I would love to contribute the UX is not very friendly. Anyhow, not complaining, just asking for some help/directions - where can I find the piece of content that I've added and was removed since the content itself is valuable and relevant and just need to fix it. I would have to start all over again :) Cborodescu (talk) 13:45, 30 April 2020 (UTC)

Response to your assertions

Hello,

I would like to refute your accusation that the external link I posted was inappropriate. I am currently an insurance broker in Canada and many of my clients have reached out to me in regards to price breaks they are able to get through their respective insurance provider. The article I have chosen to link to is a LowestRates article that is relevant to the subject matter, accurate and furthermore the writer within the article has promised to update the information as more will come out. If you find another article that has the same properties I will gladly link to it as I have no interest in promoting a company I have no affiliation with and in some circumstance, I consider my direct competition. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AhmedFarhan1991 (talkcontribs) 14:02, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

I'm glad to hear that you're not affiliated with the site or working for their "boutique inbound marketing agency." That would be in direct violation of our terms of use as undisclosed paid editing. Looking forward to your alternate sources that are not supported by that same agency. Kuru (talk) 14:12, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

Deletion of content posted on Qnet' Wikipedia

Posted content on 25 April 2020 but why it get deleted by saying that insufficient context and that there are subsequent significant action against Vihaan , which were stayed, seems to be contradict the significance. But this reason of deletion is baseless because the content which was posted was true and was shared with proof. Please see and get it add it's mandatory for people to get aware with the facts. Riyakumari8462 (talk) 11:25, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

The facts are that two sources from February 2019 have nothing to do with the subsequent and significant legal actions against the firm in August. There is a paragraph at the beginning of that timeline section which covers the material sufficiently. Please use the article's talk page to propose future additions. Thanks for keeping an eye out for mirrors and other potential bad sources, while patrolling #1lib1ref/#AfLibWk edits. I appreciate also that you are being gentle with the editors. If you suspect that the message isn't getting out to some of the editors, please let me know -- and I can highlight that information to the organizers. Sadads (talk) 21:25, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
@Sadads: Thanks, it's been a little busy. Please note that I'm not specifically patrolling the event - they are just lighting up the list of mirrors that I watch. The exercise seems to throw them into the deep end, but I'm trying to be patient. I've only run into one that just seems to be ignoring the talk page; I will ping you if it continues to be a problem to see if there are alternative means of communication. Kuru (talk) 21:56, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
For sure, I totally understand: I am going through some of the most active editors in the event, because they seem to be gaming the system a bit, so more likely to be taking shortcuts and doing it inneffectively -- I have a few that I am going to flag for the organizers already -- however, most of the editors I have found from the campaigns seem to be doing moderately good edits -- not perfect, but much better than our average new editor in Africa so its very exciting/positive. Sadads (talk) 22:06, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Variable Sources

MR Kuru Thank you for the observation. I will check the sources and correct them any time I log in Chiinobis (talk) 15:12, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

#AflibWk editors

Is there any centralized discussion? I'm seeing blockable behavior. Adding a citation every few minutes is spamming. Editors should be reviewing the article as a whole, checking what refs are already in use, and ensuring that new refs are independent and reliable. --Hipal/Ronz (talk) 16:45, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

Not that I'm aware of - the website of the event is here. There's a guide there that mentions resources, including a presentation on how to add sources. It is missing the "make sure the source is reliable" step, but maybe that's covered in another deck. It looks like they've made it a contest, which could be providing some incentives to act rapidly. Kuru (talk) 17:15, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
There is another deck: here. Covers reliable sources and even has a link to the perennial list. Kuru (talk) 17:20, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
That's a relief, though it is encouraging what amounts to spamming while creating a nice cover for intentional spamming. I'm going to try to ignore it for the rest of the day and see what happens. --Hipal/Ronz (talk) 17:39, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
A:h, I suggested ANI to Hipal, not for blocks but for a solution. I've also find citation needed tagbombing, no on has told them they can tag a whole article or a section, and up to 10 cns in a section is both a mess and someone trying to win a contest even while not editing constructively. I've been discussing this with User:RexxS, I'm not sure how long this should be ignored as they are making a very large number of bad edits. a mess. Doug Weller talk 17:57, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
Please don't ignore any bad edits. We should try to be as welcoming as possible to any new editors, but part of that is to try to acquaint them with our conventions and expectations. By all means, please ask editors to slow down and do the checks that have been suggested. That is one of the most helpful things you can do. If they continue with bad edits after having things explained to them, there's little alternative to applying blocks as needed. --RexxS (talk) 18:08, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
Yes - I've made corrections as I've run across problems. I've avoided blocking as long as they're talking. I think I've only made two blocks so far - both completely ignoring feedback after four or five messages. I have, however, worked very hard to explain in detail why some of the problems are problems. Almost every one has been unfailingly nice and seems to be trying. Kuru (talk) 18:33, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for all your efforts. I've left a note at User talk:FNartey (WMF), one of the facilitators to alert them of the issues we've been facing. Let's hope we don't have to block any more. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 19:23, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

@Korebabs: Awesome job! The preferred methodology is to move it to the draft space and get feedback through the articles for creation process. I can move it to draft for you if you'd like (it can be a little tricky to move pages). It's not necessary to create a new section each time you post here; it's okay to use the same conversation. Are you asking me to move the material in your sandbox into a draft article? Kuru (talk) 19:19, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

Yes. And I will also love to know, like when is it possible to get the moved articles published? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Korebabs (talkcontribs) 11:24, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

Done - it's at Draft:Dawud Shittu Noibi. You can read about submitting articles at Wikipedia:Articles for creation. I'm sorry, as I mentioned, I'm not an expert on the notability of academics and cannot assist with that process. Kuru (talk) 11:54, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

Thank you. I look forward to when the articles will be published. I still have some others. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Korebabs (talkcontribs) 20:01, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

Do you think that this person existed or not?

Hi, this person Red Legs Greaves' article says that he may have been fictional. Do you think that he did exist or not? Davidgoodheart (talk) 02:43, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

Every book and source has different accounts (some of which are obviously fictional), and the stories far post-date the events. Seems like simple folklore. This blog seems to be a good outline, but not WP:RS. Kuru (talk) 03:15, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
So are you saying that you are unsure, and it can't be proven either way if he did exist or not? And what about this person Andreas of Reichbinder, as it says in his article that he was possibly mythical. Davidgoodheart (talk) 05:07, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

1976 Arkansas gubernatorial election

Kindly give me some other source that Griffith was a master plumber, or leave the source given alone. Conservapedia may have its ideological biases, but it turns out to be a really good resource on obscure Southern politicians in the 70s. It has no reason to mislead on the employment of such an obscure man as Griffith. Hi Kuru. You;ve recently unblocked this user based on their stated understanding of copyright. Vandalism

Hello, I noticed recently that you reverted a few edits that could be considered WP:VANDAL on a few pages, mostly done by non registered users. I've seen a lot of such vandalism lately and wanted to ask how I could better combat such vandalism. Currently I am limited to the articles on my watchlist which makes it very hard to keep track of Vandalism as I have to go through multiple before after revisions to detect sketchy edits. I'm relatively new to wikipedia so I was wondering is there is a better way to go about this. Also how do I report repeat vandals so that some sort of strict action is taken against them? Please leave a talkback or ping me when you reply so I don't miss it. Thanks! Debitpixie 💬 14:23, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

@Debitpixie: I really don't do much more than that. I have several thousand articles on my watchlist, many of which are there because they've been spammed or vandalized repeatedly. I warned users if there's a problem. You can report disruptive editors to WP:AIV and a monitoring admin will evaluate the edits and block them if necessary. Kuru (talk) 04:13, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
Kuru Thanks, I'll work on identifying more such spam and vandalism prone pages that I can add to my watchlist. Thanks for the help :) Debitpixie 💬 15:14, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

Wrong marking of spam

as marked by you "July 2020 Information icon Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Bank of Baroda. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include, but are not limited to, links to personal websites, links to websites with which you are affiliated (whether as a link in article text, or a citation in an article), and links that attract visitors to a website or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the page, please discuss it on the associated talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. Kuru (talk) 16:18, 18 July 2020 (UTC)"

This is wrong as the link is created to help users find atms of banks like bank of baroda so this is very relevant to the article bank of baroda thus was included in the page. Kindly remove it from spam list.

Neither of those (keep the links or remove the article) are going to happen. When you publish something on Wikipedia, it's no longer "yours" but "Wikipedias". You're also trying to add spam links to the article which is never allowed. Ravensfire (talk) 15:32, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

Seeking Advice

Hello, Kuru. You recently deleted an article I wrote for the Hector Carlos Lora page, and rightfully so. I did not notice that I had done a copyright infringement, and so I want to not repeat my mistake. Therefore, I'd like to get some advice on how I can proceed. I've written a new article for that page (which I ran through 2 plagiarism detector softwares, both of which turned out with zero plagiarism) but I want to make sure I do it correctly so that it is not deleted, which is why I have not yet published it. Do you have any advice for me so that my article is not deleted? My objective in writing it is so that my hometown is better represented in Wikipedia's community. All the information I've written has links to it so that it is verifiable. Anything else I can do? Thank you, LMPAJ (talk) 21:50, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

It's best to start creating articles in the Draft Namespace. Please be more careful with copyright - the image you added was also fairly questionable. Would be a good idea to not falsify licenses like that. Make sure every claim is clearly sourced to reliable sources. Kuru (talk) 21:08, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

Dear sir, Please Revert my changes.

With due respect, I never made any promotional edits. You removed that whole paragraph in I mentioned about wireless printer and all . I accepted it but I have done many more required changes also please revert them. I strongly think they improved the article information. Please undo the latest removal.

Regards: Govindsinghlayn

Use reliable sources - the "support" link looks like a third-party spam page. Do not insert your own commentary or puffery about the company or products, especially not superlatives sources to PR puff pieces. Make a draft on the article's talk page if you cannot do this. IP range global block

Greetings, way back in 2010 I was hit with an apparent IP "autoblock" that you removed. At that time you mentioned that if it happened again you could make my "account exempt to those kinds of blocks".
My family was in the direct path of Hurricane Laura. We live less than 50 miles north of the U.S. landfall. The area was devastated and there were weeks without electricity or internet but then we were hit with Hurricane Delta. We ran both times. During this time (September 26, 2020) I attempted to log in on my laptop using my cell phone as a hotspot and found I was hit with a global IP block that included my talk page. I had to dig around a lot to find ways to seek being unblocked. I sent some emails to the Stewards that included "My editor user name is otr500. I have been IP blocked: Start of block: 13:51, August 2, 2019 Expiry of block: 12:51, November 2, 2020. IP address is 63.246.153.118 and the blocked range is 63.246.153.0/24. Per the above, the Block ID is number is 225967. Martin Urbanec‬ was apparently the Admin.".
On October 12, 2020, I received the following: Dear Otr500,

"Thank you for reaching out to us. I have reviewed your request, and granted your English Wikipedia account the IP Block Exemption user right.

The only reason you were targeted by a block was because it appears a VPN/Proxy or similar software is being used. Because sockpuppets use this to hide their location and abuse their rights, we have to block them.

Normally I would ask for more information about why you are using a VPN to edit as editors are not normally entitled to edit via a VPN. That said, given your current situation, I can think of a few reasons it would be possible. Also given your edit history, I decided to skip it altogether.

For now you have been granted an exemption for 1 month. If you are still affected by the same block at the end of that time, we can discuss further about what is going on and get clarifications to those questions.

Sincerely, User:AmandaNP English Wikipedia CheckUser"

  • Please note the excerpts are because these are from emails. If you need or want copies of the actual emails I would have to send them to you privately. I linked to AmandaNP for transparency and in case some involvement is necessary.
The reason I am inquiring from you is that even though my block was global I am a Wikipedia editor. AmandaNP gave me a temporary reprieve of one month but I am now seeking to find out if I can get a longer IP Block Exemption at least on the English Wikipedia. I have never been blocked since (until this time) and I have made it a goal to never do anything to get blocked so it was very upsetting.
I do not have any idea about the above mentioned "VPN/Proxy or similar software", how to look into it, or anything about it. If I am logged in as a known editor I really don't understand how a VPN would mask anything. I do not remember where I was at when I tried to log in but I have never logged in anyway other than my laptop or my cell phone.
If there was ever a case for an editor to be trusted with an exemption I feel I would qualify so am seeking (per WP:EXEMPT) to be considered for such a right. Thank you in advance for your consideration, Otr500 (talk) 13:08, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
@Otr500: I apologize for not returning your email urgently, as I was clearing out the queue of 60 others also requesting exemptions and in the timespan of not responding to your email, we are now back to another 30. When I had made the original decision, I took into consideration factors that you did not list here, and that I can't disclose without your permission as it's your private information. The short of it though was that your regular internet connection would be restored and would not need a block exemption that long.
The rundown of it is the IP address you mentioned above, 63.246.153.118, is not registered to your mobile provider (again which I am barred from disclosing) as you thought it was. It's registered to a group called M247. M247 is a company that provides services that masks people's IP addresses and offers them a way to abuse Wikipedia. (For those more experienced with the technical terms, it's a colocator and a webhost) Now as I noted, it was likely there was a completely valid reason that you are being routed through this companies servers given there was likely infrastructure damage to any ISP working in your area, and they may be providing a solution until that is back up. I was right about that being the case, as the company offers disaster recovery solutions. So this explains why your IP address is being routed through there for now.
I really don't want to have to get into the fact that you think it's a right for you to be able to edit Wikipedia, several people will tell you it's not. But, I have provided a way forward for you to edit in our interactions and I don't get why you are challenging my decision with another administrator because I have provided that option. The only reason you are blocked is because your edits are now coming through IP addresses that are to be blocked by policy. Also, IP Block exemptions are routinely never granted indefinitely, and in fact, people who edit from China have to renew their exemption with us usually every few years until we fully establish their need a few times.
Now, I would like to have an amicable return to your editing instead of this mess. If you have a further concern that your IP will still be under this webhost after the time in which your ISP said your service would be restored (which you noted should be relatively soon), then please either note it here, or if you want continued privacy, please use the ticket. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 13:50, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Questions about using Wikipedia

Dear Kuru,

Thanks for removing a block from my account and allowing me to change the username. I just wanted to ask the following: If I'm a COI, how I can create an article about the company I'm working for, without breaching the Wikipedia rules? Should I disclose it on my user page or ask somebody to create this article?

I would really appreciate your reply since I'm quite new to Wikipedia and didn't know all the rules at the beginning.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Best, Andrew — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrew 1008 (talkcontribs) 15:45, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

At this point, please do not. You were unblocked on good faith as you indicated you would like to contribute to the encyclopedia, and that you would avoid your COI. This is not a promising sign. Kuru (talk) 15:50, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

For sure, I won't do it, as promised. I will do my best to make contributions to Wikipedia. I just want to understand the rules and how people should proceed if they got this intention. Thanks again for unblocking. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrew 1008 (talkcontribs) 16:34, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

thanks, and small favor?

Hi Kuru, glad you noticed my recent additions (not completed yet) to Alamo Plaza Historic District. It seems i created that as a stub way back in 2008, when NRHP nomination documents were not available on-line. And now I happen to have been developing Draft:Crockett Hotel and found my way back there. Hey if/when you are in the San Antonio area, it would be great if you could take photos of any, hopefully even all, of the separate buildings and memorials and so on which are components in the district. At least one photo of each would be usefully added to the list-article, likely as part of a table with a row for each item, in future editing, as has been done in development of many other historic district articles.

Hey, it would be a small favor if you could accept/move Draft:Crockett Hotel into mainspace. The topic is obviously notable, and anyone could move it to mainspace, but I am under (stupid/undeserved) editing restriction and can't put it there myself. It's more convenient to develop in mainspace, including for reason of adding links to it from elsewhere (which a bot will rip out as "cross-namespace" redirects). No problem if this is not of interest to you to do; it will get moved to mainspace anyhow whenever AFC backlog catches up.

Either way, thanks again for your interest. --Doncram (talk) 01:26, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Absolutely. I'm not downtown much these days, but would be happy to hunt down some of those sites and get some photos next time I'm there. Note that a few may no longer exist, like the Lady Bird Johnson Fountain. I see that HitroMilanese has already accepted the draft of the Crockett - good call.
