Yalamanchili Satyanarayana Chowdary (Telugu: యలమంచిలి సత్యనారాయణ చౌదరి ) [/ˈjɛlɑːmənɪlɪ/ (yɛləː-mən-chili) /ˈsəθjnɑːrɑːjənə/ (səth-yə-nɑrɑa-yənə) /ˈəwðər/ (chow-dhəry)] popularly known as Sujana Chowdary is an Indian politician who is also the chairman[2] and principle founder of Sujana Group of Companies. Chowdary is from the city of Hyderabad in the Ranga Reddy District of Andhra Pradesh.

Born in Kanchikacherla, he was the forth child and youngest child born to Janardhana Rao and his wife Suseela Kumari. Chowdary began his professional career by promoting the Sujana Group of Companies with family and friends in the year 1986 after he obtained his masters from the PSG College of technology, Coimbatore. His philosophy was largely shaped by his interests in promotion of higher technical education, human development, healthcare and social welfare.[1] He was elected unopposed and unanimously as a member of parliament into the Rajya Sabha representing the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) from him home state of Andhra Pradesh on 22nd June 2010.[1]

Early life

Birth and childhood

Chowdary was the youngest of 4 children who was born on 2 June 1961 in Kanchikacherla to Janardhana Rao and his wife Suseela Kumari.[1] He was named after his grandfather, he spent most of his childhood years in Vijayawada, Miryalaguda and Hyderabad. His paternal grandfather_____________, after whom he was named, is a retired Indian Police Service(IPS) officer who was ranked the Deputy Inspector General of Police. His maternal grandfather was a farmer who was also a Graduate. His father, Y Janardhana Rao, worked for the Government of Andhra Pradesh where he was the Superintendent Engineer in the AP Irrigation and Power Department.

Education

Chowdary earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering in the year 1984, from Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology, Hyderabad. Pursuing his education after his bachelors he obtained his Masters degree from the PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, with specialization in Machine Tool Engineering.

Career

Shunning pursuit of a job-oriented career, Chowdary reasoned entrepreneurship.He promoted the Sujana Group of Companies in 1986[3] by manufacturing electric fans and other home appliances) under the name Padmini.[4]The name Sujana was the amalgamation of the names of his father and mother. Buoyed by the success of this venture, the Sujana Group soon diversified into steel re-rolling in 1988.[3] Capitalizing on the liberalization of the Indian economy in the early nineties, Chowdary expanded the group’s core activity lines through regular capacity additions and inorganic acquisitions.[3]

In of July 2011 the Sujana Group ranked as one of the top 10 growing business conglomerates across India[5].Under his leadership, the group diversified into domains of power transmission, telecom infra, renewable energy, commercial real estate, healthcare and education[6][3] with a human capital of more than 6000 employees and a Tangible Net Worth of Rs.2300 crores. [6]

The Sujana Group celebrated its Silver Jubilee in May 2011.[3] Its market reach is out across the country, with over 120 dealers/distributors and has an overseas presence in United Arab Emirates, Africa, Singapore,Indonesia, Mauritius and Hong Kong.[6]

Personal life

Chowdary married to Y Padmaja on 6 August 1989 and the couple have 2 children, Y.S. Karthik the elder son is currently pursuing his under-graduation in the United States of America and Y Naga Chandini the younger daughter is in the final year of her school education. The family resides in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.[1]

Philanthropy

Chowdary's span of philanthropic interests encompasses promotion of higher technical education, healthcare, human development and social welfare.[1]

He holds membership of Governing Council as well as the Chairmanship of the Committee of Share Medical Care[7], A Charitable Society which has established the MediCiti Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) near Hyderabad. The MediCiti Institute of Medical Sciences runs a Medical College, a College of Nursing, a School of Nursing and a 600 bed free-service full fledged teaching hospital. [8]

The Sujana Charitable Trust and the Sujana Foundation, manifest the Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.[6][3][9] The Foundation supports two schools for challenged children in Chennai, an Old Age Home in Hyderabad, and grants scholarships and merit awards for excellence in the areas of academics, sports, social entrepreneurship, innovation in engineering, agriculture, poverty alleviation and rural development.[1][9]. Chowdary nurtures and financially supports a number of budding entrepreneurs to set up their own industries.[9]

Interests

Chowdary is a connoisseur of vintage cars. His hobbies include photography __________. He is a lifetime member of the Constitution Club of India and a member of Jubilee Hills International Center and Young Presidents' Organization.[1]

Political interests

Chowdary owes political allegiance to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) the leading party of Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh State Legislative Assembly. He is actively associated with the N. T. Rama Rao Trust which is the Party’s social Services arm. Under the auspices of the Trust Chowdary implemented various healthcare schemes for the poor, such as free healthcare during pregnancy to women, free eye check up and cataract surgeries, mobile rural clinics and launched one of the largest Blood Banks in the State. HE also actively takes part in relief works for those affected due to natural calamities.[1][9]

Member of Parliament

Well known for his contributions on the industrial and business fronts and highly popular for his pro-poor social stance, Chowdary was elected unanimously and unopposed in 2010 as a Member of the Parliament in the Rajya Sabha.[10] He represents the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in the Upper House of the Indian Parliament.[1][10]

Indo-Singapore Parliamentary Friendship Group

Chowdary has been appointed as member of Indo-Singapore Parliamentary Friendship Group, jointly setup as a step towards strengthening bilateral ties between the two parliaments. [11]

Chowdary has been appointed as a Member of Department Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce, Government of India.[12].[13]

Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Food Processing Industries

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation

Chowdary is Ex-officio member of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).[15]

Task Force on Clean Energy - Columbia Law School

Chowdary is a Member and one of the Project Leaders, of the Task Force on Clean Energy set up by the prestigious Columbia Law School, USA, for drawing up a legal contractual system for governing proposed participation of US investments into clean Energy development projects in India. The Task Force consists of legal luminaries, including the Additional Solicitor General of India, Mr. Mohan Parasran.[2]

Court of Hyderabad Central University

In recognition of his contributions in the field of education, Mr. Chowdary has been nominated for the third year in succession to the Court (Senate) of the Hyderabad Central University, administered by the Government of India.[17]
