Commonscat boxes
When you add the Commonscat boxes to WMATA articles, could you place them directly under the == External links == header rather than beneath the coordinates? When the text is short, it doesn't make that big of a difference, because it renders below the longer infobox. But for the longer articles, putting the box directly beneath the header makes the box sit to the right alongside the links, rather than beneath them. And as shorter articles grow up, having the box in the right place already saves a step later on. SchuminWeb (Talk) 04:47, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
Categories People by city
hello,
It's ok for me, but in this case, it would be better to do the same thing for all countries (see People of Canada by city or People of the United States by city). But you are right, for other countries (like France) all categories use "of" rather than "from". Okki (talk) 05:42, 16 February 2009 (UTC) ps: sorry for my really poor english.
- I didn't see this reply until after I switched the categories. 8-o When I created the original cat, I was going by the Philadelphia example. But now that I've seen People of the United States by city, I understand what you mean. It doesn't matter to me either way. Whatever works best. DC Meetup Events: You're invited!
Wikipedia Loves Art! (February 27) The Smithsonian American Art Museum will be holding a Wikipedia Loves Art! meetup on Friday, February 27 from 5-7 pm in the Kogod Courtyard. This is a photography event involving Wikipedians, along with Flickr users and others, to generate content for Wikipedia. Come share your experiences, meet the other teams, and take some photos! While RSVPing isn't necessary drop Jeff Gates an email if you're planning on attending so he can get a head count: gatesj (at) si.edu. There also is a signup list here, along with detailed information. The museum is conveniently located across from the Gallery Place-Chinatown metro station. DC 6th Meetup (March 7) The DC 6th meetup will take place on March 7th at Pizzeria Uno's at Union Station, one level up from the main floor. The meetup will start at 5pm, and people usually stick around there for several hours. You can RSVP at Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 6. |

Hello,
I love this image of this historic building that you contributed with. Do you happen to have any more images of it? Thanks in advance for your response. --ChaChaFut (talk) 04:32, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
- Gracias. I'm glad you like it. That's the only picture I have at the moment, but I can head over there in the near future (whenever the weather isn't so nasty, like today) and take a few more. Are you going to write an article about the building? If so, there's an infobox already created for the school (disregard the following if you're already a member of WP:NRHP and know what I'm talking about, ha). Go to my user page and at the very bottom you'll see a link for "NRHP generator". Click on it, then type "Thaddeus" and choose "DC" from the drop-down box. That will help you get started. In the meantime, I'll try to locate some pictures from government sites or Creative Commons. APK How you durrin? 07:14, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Affirmative. Given you're cleaning up, responding to the conspiracy theorests, etc, is unnecessary. Toby Douglass (talk) 22:19, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- One thing - I would like to see my comment to "M Haoran" remain. I think it is useful that people are aware that user accounts are being created purely to push a particular view into the article, because I think people in general might not think that would happen, and so be more vulnerable to it, by being unaware that such users exist. Toby Douglass (talk) 22:21, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- That's up to you. I see you've been editing since 2005, so you're probably aware of what can or cannot reduce trolling. IMHO, it would be best to ignore them. The only people who will take them seriously are fellow conspiracy theorists (aka introverted 40-year old virgins that worship Chomsky) APK thinks he's ready for his closeup 22:31, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- Rather surprised at the reminder! I thought FingersOnRoids' a serious user but that he was falling prey to the same flaw in reasoning he was pointing out in mine, and so deserved a reply *with regard to that type of reasoning error*. Of course, making that point about the issue in hand means you're discussing the issue in hand... :-) Toby Douglass (talk) 09:50, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry if I'm butting in here, but as it would be inappropriate to further respond on the talk page, my reasoning is that, hypothetically, if you were part of group that ran the ghostnet operation, would you really want to post on its Wikipedia talk page, which could potentially lead authorities straight to you? Someone involved would hardly want to advertise their participation in the smallest way, unless they were extremely lacking in common sense. Perhaps infinitesimal was the wrong word, "unlikely" would have been a better term to use, in hindsight. I hope that explains the reasoning for my comment. In regards to your recent edits, please remember to follow NPOV and OR policy, as well as CAT guidelines. There's no need to add that many categories when more specific ones are already included. You may not realize it, but this edit was POV. You were correct in rewording 'negroes', but the image depicts a lynching carried out by KKK members. For some reason you added 'white Americans'. These edits appear to be OR. Claiming that actual slavery existed in the US until 1945 is incorrect (even if a WSJ reporter thinks so). His book is entitled Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black People in America From The Civil War to World War II. I haven't read the book, but the first few words of the title doesn't seem to be referring to actual slavery (key phrase: 'by Another Name'). He might be using a metaphor, but your wording makes it seem like he thinks pre-1865 slavery existed until 1945 (if it's not a metaphor and he thinks actual slavery existed, then I can find countless sources that prove him wrong). Please be more careful with your choice of wording. Thanks. APK thinks he's ready for his closeup 14:08, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
More in perspective is your personal POV that the existence of this article is not an insult to the history of African Americans. I believe you are confused also because you have not only NOT read the award-winning book, which you condemn and opine about without reading, but you failed also to read the reviews, which are widely available. Somehow you are of the mistaken impression that white have played no role in black history. And, in that, you are factually so wrong. That this so-called article exists at all on Wikipedia is a broad insult to a vast number of people in the US and throughout the world. It is perverse that people like you believe that the lynching of black people is a joke.
Unless you fancy yourself the advice nanny, and will not be shaken from that notion, or you somehow believe that your personal POV is superior to other viewpoints, you are advised to be more careful in spewing advice willy-nilly, and in your choice of wording because you sound very much like you don't know what the hell you are spewing about.Skywriter (talk) 22:07, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
- Because I'm in a good mood today, I'll ignore some of your baseless insults and race card accusations. But accusing me of 1) thinking the poster is a "joke" because I (and another editor) removed your OR and 2) believing that the lynching of black people is a joke, is way over-the-line. Trying to intimidate someone you disagree with by throwing around accusations of "You're a racist" might scare certain people, but honey, it ain't gonna work with me. I suggest you retract your uncivil comments immediately. APK thinks he's ready for his closeup 22:42, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

I could have left you a standard template, but since you've been editing since 2005, I didn't. Nice list, and a suggestion
Hi, APK. Nice work putting together the Dupont Circle topics list. I saw you'd uploaded a few images recently, which reminded me that current encouraged practice is to upload images not to WP directly, but to Wikimedia Commons. I think the idea is that better search tools are being built for WM Commons, so uploading there increases the usefulness of your effort. PRRfan (talk) 13:49, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. It's easier for me to have a "to-do" list, than to rely on my awful memory. Besides, I thought it might be helpful for fellow Wikipedians (like yourself). 8-)
- I had boycotted Commons for several months until Februaryish of this year. During a six week period, I uploaded hundreds of images, created many, many, many categories, and organized a large portion of Commons:Category:Washington, D.C.. I actually became much more active on Commons than Wikipedia. All of that came to an abrupt end when I got fed up with bitch sysops, trolls, and someone adding misleading categories to images they found on my flickr account (example - Files by User:fill in the blank - it gives the appearance that they're the photographers). I removed the deceiving file category from one picture, but it was reverted by the uploader. I then retired from Commons after admins refused to address the situation. He started leaving me messages in Spanish (I'm not bilingual) over and over. I kept reverting and telling him to leave me alone (evolved into "fuck off" after he reverted the 1000th time). I left a stern, but civil, warning on his talk page to quit reverting (since it was my talk page). In return, he contacted some bitch who apparently blocked me for one month (I found this out when an IP left me a you're blocked template, which they reverted immediately...it was probably the Spanish troll logged out, just wanting me to know what the bitch had done). This is despite the fact I had already stated my retirement from Commons, made no edits to files, and that I wasn't the one harassing/trolling. It must be nice to have friends who will block someone without reasoning.
- Anyway, I've definitely retired from Commons. I'd rather eat a big pile of this stuff than upload another image to that site, even though I have over 1500+ images that need to be uploaded (including several hundred Dupont & Strivers' Section pictures). I also changed the licensing on my 2000+ flickr images so that people from Wikimedia can't upload them without e-mailing me and asking permission.
- Sorry for the long reply, but I figured the best explanation would include the whole background (plus, it feels good to vent - ha). APK thinks he's ready for his closeup 14:38, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
- Wow. Commons sounds like quite a mess (I've only uploaded a handful of pics myself). Too bad. PRRfan (talk) 17:07, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
- I've heard negative comments about Commons before. Having taken them to heart, I've never uploaded a single photo there. Rather, I wait for others to transfer my photos there when so motivated. APK, your "to do" list is very tempting as so many of the subjects you list have the photos already made available by you. Kudos for that. --Boston (talk) 17:21, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
- Gracias. Some of the subjects without photos are ones that I just haven't gotten to yet (mostly the embassies), in regards to uploading. I have a bad habit of researching each building before I upload an image of it (and coming up with then & now shots), thus delaying my picture productivity on WP. It's a fun hobby (to me, at least). The majority of Dupont and Kalorama buildings I research include a Congressional or diplomatic past owner. I'll admit it. I'm a nerd who enjoys that kind of boring stuff. Commons
I'm not terribly active on Wikipedia these days, so I'm so sorry that I didn't see the situation on Commons with commons:User:Manuel Trujillo Berges regarding the category on your image page. And, the block is unacceptable. Using four letter words isn't great, but I see that you were provoked and understand the reaction.
Anyway, I have requested a review of the block and am prepared to undo it:
I think most people on commons are reasonable, but there always are some difficulties. These are exacerbated by the fact that people come together there from many different language versions of Wikipedia, making it difficult for people to communicate. I can only guess that Manuel didn't understand what the category meant, though he should not have repeatedly reverted.
I sincerely hope you reconsider your retirement from Commons. It's very unlikely that someone else will come along and fill your shoes. Your work has been highly appreciated by myself, other DC-area Wikipedians, and others. --Aude (talk) 02:09, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

- Comment: I made 2 separate comments against the Admin on the WikiCommons discussion link. That said, I think that if you upload pictures at Wikipedia, it is still preferable that you do this at WikiCommons to get the Attribution because many people don't know how to do transfers to Commons...or worse they change the title of an image from Wikipedia to WikiCommons. Sometimes, it is done by the author himself like in this case But sometimes not. Please consider my statement. The Administrators have apologised and you are vindicated. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 00:25, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
- Hey Leoboudv. Thanks for voicing your opinion at COM:AI. It's very much appreciated. However, I still have no plans to continue uploading images to Commons. There were several sysops who agreed the block was unfair and that Ecemaml's actions were problematic, but nothing has changed. Ecemaml refuses to explain her reasoning for issuing a one month block and why she didn't block the actual troll. The only thing she's doing is spewing lies. When I asked why she didn't notify me of the block, her response was that since I retired, she didn't think it was necessary. Um, in that case, why was a block necessary? She's so full of shit. It all boils down to a sysop blocking someone because their trollish friend asked them to do it. No repercussions for the troll and lying sysop = why I will never upload another picture to Commons. - Thanks for your reasons APK. They are indeed sound. I would just note that there are good Admins and bad Admins on Wikipedia as well. (I have even seen Admin wheel wars here and they are very unpleasant!) I am glad I have not encountered Ecemaml on Commons and just hope that she learns her lesson to be very careful and not use the block button again because everybody is monitoring each other's behaviour. I completely respect your decision to not place any more images on Commons and wish you the best of success on Wikipedia. As an aside, here are a few images, I have placed on Commons:
- File:Mask of Amenemope1.jpg
- File:Psusennes I mask by Rafaèle.jpg
- File:Sassanid silver plate by Nickmard Khoey.jpg
- File:Crown of Sit-Hathor Yunet (Senusret II's daughter).jpg
- File:18th dynasty pharaonic crown by John Campana.jpg
- File:Polylepis rugulosa (A. Yates).jpg
If people say they want full attribution, I usually place their names both as the author and within the image title itself. Everyone is different on flickr...as in life. Thank You from BC, Canada, --Leoboudv (talk) 00:39, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
- PS: I don't know if this will hold true but Manuel posted a message on the discussion link above and then retired from Commons according to this Just to let you know, --Leoboudv (talk) 00:53, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
- Hi AgnosticPreachersKid, I know how you feel, but please do come back to Commons. I hope you agree that this would be unfair mostly to you, if you're to leave Commons because somebody did bad to you. The admins are humans too, and they do make mistakes. She publicly apologized. Please do forgive her, and come back not for her, not for Commons, but for yourself , and for me too :). I'm sure you would feel so much better! Please believe me. I know what I am talking about from my own hard earned experience. Best wishes.--Mbz1 (talk) 14:47, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
Emabassy of East Timor
Hello, in Diplomatic missions of East Timor you placed a picture stating that it was the embassy of East Timor in Washington DC. However, it is not. It is a picture of the embassy of Cape Verde in DC. If you check Diplomatic missions of Cape Verde you will see the same picture posted. Also the flag on the building shows you to which country the embassy pertains. I have removed the picture from the article. Regards; Aquintero (talk) 08:09, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
- Doh! Thanks for noticing my error. I took a lot of embassy photos that day and must have gotten a wee bit confused. I just hope Cape Verde doesn't get pissed and declare war on me. The Dupont Circle militia is still recovering from our last big fat skirmish with the Greeks. APK is ready for the tourists to leave 16:19, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

AN/I comment
On Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#ChildofMidnight (again) personal attacks and refactoring others comments, you wrote:
- I try to avoid this page, but Bongomatic's um, assessment leaves me no other choice (btw, thanks for noting my chivalry).
If you were intending to avoid AN/I but for my um, assessment, then what was your contemplated next step after your self-described (both in the comment and edit summary) "final warning"? Bongomatic 08:12, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
- Hey there, psychic. I have two suggestions for you: 1) Since you're logged into Wikipedia, go do something productive like, oh, I don't know...edit something. 2) If you want to ramble on about stupid things like the real meaning of a comment (btw, the whole discussion doesn't concern you), then do it on the talk page of someone who actually likes WikiDrama. K? Thanks so much! APK is ready for the tourists to leave 08:25, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Love me some Colbert. From here:
“ | Why can't we go back to the good old days when our government upheld the traditional definition of marriage as being between a man, a woman and a hooker? - Stephen Colbert | ” |
Indeed sir, indeed. - ℅ ✰ALLST☆R✰ echo 20:29, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
- That's deep, very deep. Colbert's portrait (hangs in the Smithsonian's American History Museum) is one of the most popular places for tourists to snap photos. APK is ready for the tourists to leave 12:42, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

For your excellently designed userpage, parts of which are really funny stuff. Cirt (talk) 22:11, 17 April 2009 (UTC) |
- Muchas gracias, Señor Cirt. The inspiration for my userpage design came from a number of things; Picasso, Warhol, happy little trees, etc. (mostly it was from sniffing glue and drinking Jägerbombs) APK is ready for the tourists to leave 12:42, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
