Extended content

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2021).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Roulette (Katy Perry so) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Notice

The article Escobar Cemetery has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Small generic local cemetery with no indication of notability. Source is a mere passing mention.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. @Lightburst Thanks for the reminder. Yes, I often vote at AfD, but only when I'm confident an article should be kept or deleted. For the cemeteries, I'm hesitant to vote 'yes' when there's limited accessible coverage and some other editors feel so strongly in voting 'no'. Sometimes I just accept that the community may not prefer to have a Wikipedia entry about a certain topic at this time, even when the topic may indeed be notable. In other words, I pick my battles, and since right now I'm a bit frustrated by the noms, I'm working on other things. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:37, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

sorry, thought I unticked the box to template you. Came here to leave a personal note, so just appending this. I don't have the issue others do with the stubs where there are findable sources that just aren't present--but I cannot find anything on this one. Star Mississippi 01:45, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
@Star Mississippi Yeah, these are tough. When I search "Forest Lawn"+"Gresham" at the Oregonian archives via Multnomah County Library, there are 8,443 returns just through 1987. Searching the same at the 1987 to present database yields 1,466 returns. I'm not going to comb through all those just to save this stub (shrug...), even if the site is indeed notable. ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:34, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

Chicken and Guns and leave

I was about to put an inline comment on this, but maybe it's better handled this way. You wrote the Chicken and Guns owner was "placed on leave". It left me wondering who has the authority to place an owner on leave? Did he place himself on leave? ☆ Bri (talk) 19:08, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

@Bri: You know, I was wondering the same thing! I specifically came across this phrase in the source, which is why I used, but I think I need to review the sources in more detail. Perhaps the restaurant group has some authority? ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:14, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Anonymous Apes monolith

Two notes in one day! If you haven't seen it yet: Activists Dressed as Apes Erect Monolith in Front of DEA Headquarters. Public art? Protest? Wiki-notable? New category for monoliths? (Utah monolith included)? ☆ Bri (talk) 00:00, 21 October 2021 (UTC)

@Bri Not sure this is independently notable. I'm not seeing enough about Anonymous Apes either to justify a new stub for the group. I almost wonder if there should be an entry for Cannabis protests or Cannabis demonstrations, since we have articles like Global Marijuana March, too. ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:08, 21 October 2021 (UTC)

Page for DHS General Counsel Jonathan Meyer

Extended content

Do you think it would be appropriate for you to create the article for Jonathan Meyer. POTUS Biden nominated him to serve as general counsel of DHS, essentially the number 3 position there. It has been highlighted in numerous articles. The nomination was recently confirmed the US Senate as shown here. Is this an appointment for which its own page should be created, particularly given the heightened publicity around the legality of DHS actions? 2601:14D:8A00:7390:ED5A:43FD:97B3:3271 (talk) 19:31, 21 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi Another Believer, I'm reviewing this article at GAN and have made a few comments that probably deserve some kind of attention, even if only "we thought of that and it's not specially relevant, because...". Nom has made a few quick edits as suggested but it's their first GAN, and they haven't commented on the GAN page. I see from the AfD (simultaneous GAN and AfD, is that a 69 or something) that you see yourself as a contributor to the article, and wonder if you wouldn't mind taking a look at the GAN comments? I don't think much effort would be needed to get this to GA. Anyway, just an idea. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:25, 23 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for reviewing. I have the review on my watchlist, but I'd like to give the nominator some time to catch up and and respond appropriately, before I jump in. I just pinged them here and hope other page watchers might take a look as well. ---Another Believer (Talk) 12:50, 23 October 2021 (UTC)
Seems I guessed right that they were too busy to respond, see the thread on the article's talk page. I've listed some sources and noted an obstacle there. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:19, 23 October 2021 (UTC)
@Chiswick Chap I am currently traveling and I doubt I will have time to follow the various sourcing discussions and complete the nomination on the other editor's behalf. I'll let you decide if the review should be closed. Bummer! ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:17, 23 October 2021 (UTC)@Chiswick Chap --Another Believer (Talk) 16:17, 23 October 2021 (UTC)
I think there's no hurry; indeed, I feel we should hold the GAN until the flurry has subsided, as it may well run to a third AfD. My view is that if the article passes *that* AfD then it should become a GA, as long as the key items on the GAN are addressed (whether by being actioned in the article or explicitly dismissed as unnecessary). So, we should wait, and I expect you'll be back from your travels by then. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:50, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
@Chiswick Chap Sure, no rush needed, but someone is going to have to dedicate themselves to picking up the nomination. You might post a note on the article's talk page seeing if anyone is interested? I prefer not to say how long, but I am actually going to be traveling for quite a while. I'll be checking in as possible, but I am unable to take on responsibility for following all related discussions and addressing all concerns. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:45, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
Ok, I'll think what to do. I think in the absence of further source analysis there will be little option but to close the GAN with suggestions for further improvement. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:49, 24 October 2021 (UTC)

Idaho Statues...

Hey, I am trying to populate things like Category:Sculptures in Idaho, Category:Outdoor_sculptures_in_Idaho and Category:Public art in Idaho and could use whatever help you can offer. I started a todo list at: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Idaho/Culture. Appreciate any help. - Mjquinn_id (talk) 01:41, 12 November 2021 (UTC)

@Mjquinn id I'll try to revisit this once I'm back home from my travels. I'm especially interested in statues and monuments at the Idaho State Capitol (I assume some are installed on the grounds). A very quick search did not turn up helpful sources with details about Capitol artworks, but once I have more time I'll do a bit more research. Good luck with this effort! ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:27, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

2022 N.America convention

Extended content

Hello, and I hope your travels are going well. Was interested in recommending that the 2022 North American convention be held in Las Vegas (Viva WikiVegas), both as a celebration of hopefully post-serious covid revelry and to put the convention back in the western part of the continent. I'd assume one of the main strip hotels (as I said in a note to Kevin, leave downtown to Britannica) would welcome the Wikipedia and Wikimedia crew with deep discounts on both a large block of guest rooms and conference halls. MGM owns many of the strip hotels and may bundle w. in with lots of extras. I don't know who organizes the choice of city, but know that you,, Bluerasberry, and a few others are active, so wanted to post you for thoughts and guidance. Randy Kryn (talk) 18:30, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

@Randy Kryn: The scarce resource for deciding where to have a conference is having a few people commit to do local planning. In the past all WikiConferences had several people in the chosen city who made up the local team and who met with local partners, photographed the site, signed local contracts, and in general did things which were challenging to do without being there. I know that the online team at meta:WikiConference North America get attention for being around year to year, but local contacts have mattered a lot in the past.
It is possible to organize without local contacts but it helps to know if they exist. Anyway, if you have other ideas, post to meta on that WikiConference page. So far as I know there are no standing proposals for where or how to do 2022, or even if it will be in person. I just had a colleague from a government agency decline to join an event due to their employer's COVID restrictions, so that is still happening. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:54, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
Thanks Bluerasberry. Would be nice to get back to in-person conferences in late 2022 after a three-year break. By, say, late October or early November those who wish to attend could attend and those who don't could join via teleconferencing. Viva WikiVegas would celebrate a return and enhance the type of formal and informal discussions which can only occur at live events. MGM, which owns much of the strip, may be excited about hosting Wikipedia and, with the chance they'd "donate" many or even all of the rooms to the non-profit (in "exchange" for goodwill, good tax writeoff, and for bringing maybe a thousand people to their casinos, shows, and buffets....yummm, Vegas buffets), could be worth serious negotiation. On the ground arrangements could be made with a few trips into town over the months and then bringing in a couple or more people a week or two before the event to set-up and arrange. Volunteers anyone (besides, no arm twisting needed, me...yummm, Vegas buffets)? Will piece some of these comments to make a case at the Meta page. Thanks again, and I hope you and yours are doing well. Randy Kryn (talk) 16:36, 22 November 2021 (UTC)

Hi, @User:Another Believer I saw you help improve the page of Shota Nakajima and Byron Gomez page and you also help other food and drinks projects like the Top Chef. Can I ask a favor to help me start Brian Malarkey's page because I created it and it always ends up being deleted or reverted. I also ask for your guidance on this one. ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:24, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Thank you

Hello again. I hope you are doing well. Apologies in advance if I have already posted this in the past, but I really want to thank you for all your help with the Holly & Ivy article. You were so warm and kind to me when I first joined Wikipedia, and I genuinely believe that played a large part in me continuing to be an editor for this long. I was very fortunate that you were one of the first editors that I really interacted with on this site. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I have decided to really retire from Wikipedia (after I complete a current GAN review) to focus my time and energy elsewhere. Apologies for getting super sappy, but my decision to retire made me feel sentimental and go back to the first article I edited on here. Maybe one day, I will go back and do a FAC for that as it would be a nice full circle moment. Either way, I just wanted to say thank you for everything! Aoba47 (talk) 05:36, 25 November 2021 (UTC)

@Aoba47 Awww, thanks so much for the kind note. I appreciate your thoughtfulness. While I'm bummed to learn you're retiring, I appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia and hope you might come around now and then. Please take care, ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:26, 25 November 2021 (UTC)

December 2021 GOCE Newsletter

Extended content
Guild of Copy Editors December 2021 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since September 2021.

                 Current and upcoming events

Election time: Our end-of-year election of coordinators opened for nominations on 1 December and will close on 15 December at 23:59 (UTC). Voting opens at 00:01 the following day and will continue until 31 December at 23:59, just before "Auld Lang Syne". Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

December Blitz: We have scheduled a week-long copy-editing blitz for 12 to 18 December. Sign up now!

Drive and Blitz reports

September Drive: Almost 400,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 27 people who signed up, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

October Blitz: From 17 to 23 October, we copy edited articles tagged in May and June 2021 and requests. 8 participating editors completed 26 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

November Drive: Over 350,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 21 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

Other news

It is with great sadness that we report the death on 19 November of Twofingered Typist, who was active with the Guild almost daily for the past several years. His contributions long exceeded the thresholds for the Guild's highest awards, and he had a hand in innumerable good and featured article promotions as a willing collaborator. Twofingered Typist also served as a Guild coordinator from July 2019 to June 2021. He is sorely missed by the Wikipedia community.

Progress report: As of 30 November, GOCE copyeditors have completed 619 requests in 2021 and there were 51 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog stood at 946 articles tagged for copy-editing (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

A somewhat premature New Year's greeting

John Vanderlyn, Ariadne Asleep on the Island of Naxos (c.1812),

Best wishes for a safe, healthy and prosperous 2022.
Thank you for your contributions toward making Wikipedia a better and more accurate place.
BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 20:17, 26 December 2021 (UTC)

Moral lesson: John Vanderlyn was an American painter who studied in Paris, and his life-sized
Ariadne Asleep on the Island of Naxos was one of the first large nudes exhibited in the United States.
Peddling the poison as well as the cure, this overtly sensuous work was presented to the public as a
moral lesson on the consequences of lascivious behavior. Visible in the distance is the ship of
Princess Ariadne's secret lover, Theseus, for whom she has betrayed her people by helping him to
escape the Labyrinth and slay the Minotaur. Ariadne's bliss will come to an end when she awakens
from her post-coital reverie, only to discover that the faithless Theseus has sailed away without her.

@Asilvering Thanks! Looking forward to addressing any concerns. ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:52, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Joe Brown's Carmel Corn

The article Joe Brown's Carmel Corn you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Joe Brown's Carmel Corn for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Asilvering -- Asilvering (talk) 05:21, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for reviewing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 05:21, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

GA nomination of first homosexual movement

Would you be willing to review my GAN for this article? It would be much appreciated. (t · c) buidhe 06:04, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't complete GA/FL/FA reviews. I'm more into creating content than reviewing. Perhaps post a note at WikiProject LGBT studies? ---Another Believer (Talk) 06:06, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

Photo requests

Hello. I'm planning a few walks for the next few weeks to collect some photographs for pages in the Cambridge MA area. I noticed your photo request template at Talk:1881 Gate, and was wondering if you can think of any pages that you (or others) have written regarding architectural features in that area which don't have photos yet. I found a few through User:Mx._Granger/Photo_program but I know I haven't found anywhere near all of them. Thanks! - Astrophobe (talk) 20:01, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

@Astrophobe Wow, great question! There may be some entries to consider at Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Meyer Gate comes to mind. Can't think of any others off the top of my head, but thanks for asking! Enjoy your walking tours, ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:23, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
Oh great idea, thank you! It would be a shame if I got the 1881 gate but missed the Meyer gate. If you happen to run across any others, please let me know :) - Astrophobe (talk) 21:38, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
It took a little longer than I'd have liked (it's ridiculous how early the sun sets here and I kept failing to get out of the house in time to take daylight photos), but 1881 Gate is now illustrated. :) - Astrophobe (talk) 00:12, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
@Astrophobe Thank you! I've removed the 'photo needed' tag on the article's talk page. Happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:26, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Oh great point, I forgot to do that. Thanks! - Astrophobe (talk) 01:32, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

@Gonnym I've suggested making a single template like Template:Wiki Loves Pride talk, which can be used to show collaborations for multiple years. Feel free to revisit the merge discussion if you have thoughts. Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:30, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

DragRaceProgressTable/14

Resolved
Extended content

Hello I want to point out that some registered users in particular Slay-12345678910 and Lorenzo 1109 who are repeatedly removing the DragRaceProgressTable/14 template on the page RuPaul's Drag Race (season 14), as usual, by inserting tables that do not respect the neutrality of the platform quoting the "Can yall give credit to the queens work .... like only showing who won the btm and elim can completely make someones track seem better or worse. like crystal methyds track looks way worse than it actually is. This is why people don't use wiki for track records anymore", which I find IMO nosense since we report the data that are actually announced during the episode (WIN - BTM - ELIM).

Of course, I've already helped re-adjust the table to standards, but ut there is an urgent need for blocking changes for both users and anonymous IP addresses that persist in modifying the deletion table. --- « Ðømīnīk Cåpuån » 16:48, 24 January 2022 (CET)

@Dominikcapuan: I am not an admin, so there's little I can do. However, I've submitted a request for temporary page protection at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. If problems persist, you may need to seek help from admins at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard or an appropriate subpage. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:52, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
