Hi Anthere, I was hoping to find additional sources for some of the redlinks in your list. How did you come across these names and do they share any common, general source besides for those that have Wikidata links to articles in other languages? czar 04:32, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

Hello user:Czar. The only links I added myself are 1) through WikiData (articles existing in other languages) or 2) categorized African feminists on Wikipedia (for the blue links). All of the red links (beside those visible through Wikidata) have been collected by members of the AFF and les Sans PagEs because several members in those groups are active feminists and simply know . I think they also worked through some websites. You probably better ask DeuxPlusQuatre or Natachat ([1]). But they also know that sources may be a big issue. Maybe they will have suggestions nevertheless. Thanks ! Anthere (talk)

African feminists

Hi, can you add a full list of the articles created on French wikipedia to the main contest list? As they were created for your segment of the contest. I would love to have allowed all wikis to participate but I couldn't do it for the main contest prizes because the bot was running the show and it would have been time consumiong to check and try to ensure compliance in French. Yes I will do that. Sorry for being late. I was in South Africa last week (for work) and it was quite difficult for I to get internet access. Then I had a 24 hours trip to return home (obviously, I slept, ate and watched funny movies instead of doing wiki :)). Anthere (talk)

Copying/translating in Wikipedia

Hi! If you translate material from one Wikipedia to another, as you did from French at Loris Cecchini, you must provide attribution for the work of the editors who created that content, unless that content was created exclusively by you (as is very nearly, but not entirely, the case here). The template {{translated page}} is a quick and handy way of doing this. Since I'm here: Wikipedia is built on independent reliable sources; I question whether adding unsourced content offers any benefit whatsoever to the project. @Justlettersandnumbers: In all those cases of articles I recently edited, I was the original editor who added this content to the French Wikipedia first and then second in English. Surely, I do not need to attribute myself with a translated by template.

More practically, most of this content has been created by a handful of people, who are also wikipedians. A lot of those texts have already been published (under a free licence) several years ago in that research report : Marta Pucciarelli (2014) Final Report. University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland, Laboratory of visual culture. [2] See for example with Colonne_Pascale. That report is mostly about ArtWorks though but fully source the information added. The previous reference was broken but I found a new online version last week and updated it. for example.

Rrecently those researchers published a book, which has been added as a bibliographic source in all the articles (including Loris Cecchini [3]). The book is : Pensa, Iolanda (Ed.) 2017. Public Art in Africa. Art et transformations urbaines à Douala /// Art and Urban Transformations in Douala. Genève: Metis Presses. ISBN 978-2-94-0563-16-6. It is now available for purchase should you want to check. A full OTRS permission has been sent by the authors a week ago. I sent OTRS the exact list of concerned articles last Friday. If you want to check with OTRS, please do. It is ticket [Ticket#2018020910006021] [4]. Obviously not yet treated, but I expect they will add to each talk page a template to indicate the source of the information added to articles. In short... this information is SOURCED and the texts are fully under free licence. Those are scholarly works funded by public research in a Swiss University.

Obviously, the texts are not fully copy and paste as I integrated them as much as possible within our editorial way. In some cases, there were already an article so I adapted things the best I could. And did not keep elements when I felt them inappropriate.

Mind you... it is very much an egg and hen issue. OTRS permissions can not be recorded and handled until the text is fully on Wikipedia. And at the same time the text should be sourced and cleared before it is published ? It is not possible to do it all AT THE SAME TIME :) So I started by putting the texts, putting the sources, then sending the permissions. That's legit. I don't blame you for being careful, but this text is fully sourced so really should not be removed. So thank you for restoring it. Anthere (talk) 10:20, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

OK, Anthere, these are just my personal thoughts – I plan to walk away from this if I possibly can:

• Of course you are right that if you write a text and then add it first to one Wikipedia and then to another, there's no need to attribute yourself (though it doesn't hurt to do so in an edit summary); if, however, you add a text to one Wikipedia and then translate it after others have contributed to it, you should provide attribution for their work, however minimal (again, it doesn't hurt)
• If the text is copied from somewhere else, you must provide clear attribution of the source – for Creative-Commons sources, the {{CC-notice}} template is handy for the purpose
• The Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 licence in the ticket is not compatible in Wikipedia
• Just because someone has written something and released it under a free licence, that does not necessarily mean that it is sourced, true, accurate, well-written or in any way suitable for use as a reference; it may be all those things, but that will be evaluated by the editors writing the content
• Even less does a free release in itself imply that external content is suitable for inclusion in our articles – in practice, that is almost never the case
• To take a single example, you added at Loris Cecchini "... the natural systems are transformed into a stratified system of semantic relationships, with a view to picking up on the invisible processes of a synthesis between nature and culture". Assuming just for a moment that that is sourced to reliable scholarly publications, we're left with two questions: what, if anything, is it supposed to mean? and what on Earth is it doing in Wikipedia?
• Ms Pensa has for years been using Wikipedia/Wikiafrica to promote her interests, her work, her friends, her association(s), the school(s) where she works/worked and so on – see, e.g., this discussion on her talk-page (so I did really wonder why you were spamming refs to her book through the project!)
• Wouldn't it be a good plan to get some sort of editor consensus before adding any more of that sort of stuff to Wikipedia? And wouldn't the best place to do that be the WP:Conflict of interest noticeboard?

Hmmm. I am so used to Wikimedia Commons now rather taking CC BY SA 4.0... that it slipped out of my mind that it was not compatible with Wikipedia. I do not think it is a big issue in itself. Will need a new otrs ticket though...

Most of the discussion you point at is from 2013/2014 ? Well, ages ago :( I will be more pragmatic here. Those ArtWorks do exist. Those artists do exist and have significant notoriety (the research does mention many more artists, but I considered them non notable enough, or considered there were not enough sources, so I dropped them entirely). We mean (well, I mean at least) to get more content about Africa on Wikipedia. And that is often a challenge to do so because African artists are so much referenced than European ones. Tough to find sources that are not the gallery where they display their work or their own social profiles. So when there are cases where we have content about those artists written by someone else and not self-published, I think that's the best option we have to write something about those guys. And yes, either I put the source of this content (then it may be spam, but it is sourced) or I do not (then not spam, but not sourced). Hmmm... tough.

I admit ... the natural systems are transformed into a stratified system of semantic relationships, with a view to picking up on the invisible processes of a synthesis between nature and culture sucks :) I missed that one. Otherwise... by and large, though I may have missed some other funny statements, I believe what I put is useful and informative. I dropped quite a bit of stuff and rephrased significantly sometimes.

Wiki loves Women (Africa)

Hi,

I ran across your group today inviting your project to review and provide input on the newly proposed Women in Red User Group. Women in Red hosted a editathon this month with Sub-Africa being one of the themes. I have created two biographies of African women.

I would assume you would want that information on your page, but I see a lot of information on African feminists. Is this a Wikiproject for all African women or just African feminists? If all, I would be happy to participate and contribute biographies. MauraWen (talk) 17:24, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi User:MauraWen. It is definitely "all". I think there was an heavy weight put on feminist at some point because this was an approach we felt was interesting. But by no means is that a limitation. ACTUALLY... we are planning to host a little drive in October around witches. Well, in French, user:nattes à chat, the funder of w:fr:Projet:Les sans pagEs started working a few months ago on "sorcières" (witches). Then recently, I launched a local w:fr:Projet:Les sans pagEs/Méditerranée group and since I am active both in les sans pagEs and in Wiki Loves Women, I thought of how we could do a joint effort. And upon seeing the work already done by Natacha on witches, I thought... let's do a work on Wikidata and witches. Then talking with africans, I thought "witch" was not the right term and we thought WikiSorcery may be a better move. The idea is to list and then work on biographies of "notable" dead witches... Does that sound like something you would be interested in ? :) We had an edit-a-thon last week and thought we needed to start a meta page for that project, but it is not yet done... Yes, I would like to work on biographies if I can find sources. you can see from my user group page that I do a lot of biographies. Working recently on putting this Women in Red user group together, I discovered a new passion for supporting and advocating for girls and women in 3rd world countries, especially Africa. I finished a biography on Osvalde Lewat last week and really enjoyed making the contribution. AfroCine: The Months of African Cinema Continues….

Thank you very much for signing up to participate in the Months of African Cinema global contest/edit-a-thon, and thank you for your contributions so far.

It is already the middle of the contest and a lot have been achieved already! We have been able to get over 200 articles created in over seven (7) languages! The figures soars to up to a thousand, if Wikidata entries are included. Furthermore, there have been about 5 in-person gatherings of Wikipedians in different countries across the world to create articles about African(a) cinema!

Wikidata edits not showing when logged out

Hi Anthere, thanks for your dedication in promoting projects that is improving African visibility on Wikimedia. Please, concerning the Wikidata occupational drive, a couple of the Nigerian languages now have entries/labels in the specified items, however I noticed it is not visible when am not logged in, is there some kind of verification (like pending changes reviewer on WP) that is normally done on Wikidata? Hi User:HandsomeBoy. To make sure... the updates do not show up on WikiData or do not show up on the occupation page on Wikipedia ? On Wikipedia, it is normal as the bot is only updating from time to time (you can force the update yourself). On Wikidata, I am not aware of any reviewing system. It may more be a cache situation ? Would you mind pointing out to such a page as example ? Anthere (talk)

What I mean is -- for example, even though there are Hausa labels for every occupation as seen Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Loves Women/Occupations/ha, if you open each of the Wikidata item, the labels are not reflected, for example look at actor, animator, film director, television presenter, etc. the Hausa field is empty. This is not a cache issue because most of these edits were done since October, and we are in November now. HandsomeBoy (talk) 17:10, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

It was a mistake, anyone with the the link should be able to view all three ss now. i don't think its a cache thing, because the Igbo labels which I added after the Hausa are showing. I have also tried it in at least 3 computers, and its still same thing. Maybe I was too fast with my keyboard when I was adding thd e labels, but even if that is the case it shouldn't be showing on your system. But did you try it while logged out?HandsomeBoy (talk) 23:38, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

Participate in usability testing for new Event Metrics tool?

Hi Anthere. I'd like to invite you to participate in usability tests we're planning for the Event Metrics program now in development. The test will involve a one-hour video conference session with a design researchers, who will lead you through a series of tasks on the program and talk to you about how well the tool's user interface works for you and how it could be improved. Sessions will take place the second and third weeks of January.

Mystery woman

I am working on the list of suffragists for our WIR 2019 year-long campaign. I keep running across references to "Lady Steel" of Pietermaritzburg, Natal who was president of the Women's Enfranchisement Association from 1916 to 1931. Apparently she replaced Mary Emma Macintosh who was the previous president upon her death. I found a few references for Macintosh but find virtually nothing for Steel. ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. I came across a few of your edits yesterday and nearly template warned you because I was confused by your edits and what purpose they served since there were no edit summaries and haven't been for the most part. I decided against doing so since I realized you're an admin but would you mind including edit summaries? I have no doubt your edits are in good faith but it's confusing to see content and source removal with no explanation and no obvious reasoning behind it. Thanks! I suppose you are talking of all the updates I made with the GII figures (adding 2021 to nearly all countries and to quite a few « Science and Tech » country pages). The ONLY purpose was to update the articles with the GII latest figure. No other purpose... I must confess it was terribly boring to do that on about 200 pages one by one. Hence... no edit comment. I am very sorry it generated nervosity to you and I apology. In most cases, I hardly removed any info from the page (sometimes kept a comparison between year 2021 and year 2020 OR kept the comparison between year 2021 and year 2019, depending on what seems the most interesting for the reader, rather than keeping ALL three years). It turned out it generated up to 5 sources for a rather simple statement... which I felt was... a bit overwhelming. Hence I took upon me to do a little clean-up work and remove some of the sources when I felt it was duplicating.

In any cases, I am done updating all countries and quite relieved it is over :) I take note to make more effort to put edit summaries. I must confess I tend to forget doing that. Ooops. Anthere (talk)

New administrator activity requirement
