Hi there, this does seem to be an easier way to communicate. I suppose I will also have a 'talk' page? Many thanks for all your help. I wonder if there is a book: Wikipedia For Dummies? — Preceding unsigned comment added by GLOSCurator (talk • contribs) 15:08, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for your watchful eyes on the above page in Wikipedia. The person who has been meddling with that page is a man who was rightly kicked out of the Craft some years ago. He was at one time a leading member of that Grand Lodge, an outstanding ritualist and at one time rose to the Office of Junior Grand Warden. It could be argued that he was unfairly treated which led to his being removed from the Grand Lodge, but that is where all sympathy for him comes to an abrupt end!
You say in one of your edits that he made you laugh - don't laugh. He created two web-sites www.glbfg.de and www.gcbramg.com in which he wrote some of the most disgusting and frankly libelous harangues I have ever read. Both of these web-sites have thankfully been deleted, but he has taken to sending emails of a disgraceful nature to all the Brethren in the GL-BFG and more recently he has been posting rubbish on the guestbook-page of the new Grand Lodge of British Freemasons in Germany website www.gl-bfg.com using the pseudonym WBro Brian Malcolm 841 (he must think we're stupid). The "W" should stand for "Worshipful" - I rather think it stands for "wicked".
He will undoubtedly deny that he has been dismissed from Freemasonry, but denial doesn't kill facts. He suggested in one of his silly edits that only the United Grand Lodges of Germany (VGLvD) can expel someone from the Craft. That of course is absolute rubbish. The five individual Grand Lodges in Germany are all largely independent and have the powers to act independently, which includes removal from the Craft. The VGLvD is a body which provides the link to other Grand Lodges in the World. Certainly it has a kind of governing function and is the highest court in the German Freemasons movement. But in matters of a disciplinary nature, it purely acts as the organ to disseminate the information to other Grand Lodges and has no powers to overturn or to enact a decision made by one of the individual Grand Lodges. Its main function is to ensure Freemasonry in Germany acts in accordance with the key principles and tenets of the Craft and does this through the medium of the Senate.
I have been a member of the GL BFG for many years and if I can help you in your quest in respect of Freemasonry, I'll do what I can. By the way, I have also been active in helping some ladies to involve themselves in Womens' Freemasonry here in Germany.
Thanks for your message on my talk-page. My goodness me, you really have done some research into German Freemasonry and indeed, despite my number of years in the German Craft, you have opened my eyes quite considerably.
I have sort of scan-read the article on Freemasonry in Germany but there is too much at this moment to be able to make detailed comment, but I promise to re-read it in a more "in-depth" way. Also the other stubs as you call them, will be read in depth and may be we can collectively expand the articles.
The scoundrel who has been defiling the GL BFG page will also have to be monitored in these pages that you have created, because he will probably want to add his own stupid nonsense, especially in the short paragraph concerning British Freemasonry in Germany which you have created. The really sad thing here is, that at one time he was a very respected Mason and has written a book on the subject of British Freemasonry in Germany, he has also lectured on the subject. But probably as a result of his being dismissed from the Grand Lodge after a spat with the Grand Master at the time, he turned truly evil and vengeful. His two web-sites (now deleted as I previously mentioned) contained some of the most dreadful and libellous diatribes I have ever come across. As a consequence, he is reviled and looked upon with utter contempt by the rest of GL BFG. His utterances were so bad that one seriously questioned whether he could ever have been a true Freemason, since no person ever truly believing in the ideals of the Craft, could possibly lower himself to write such evil and nasty blether! Whatever, I appreciate your diligence and it looks like we have another Crusader - "Forest Treekeeper" ... I think I know who he is, but will respect his privacy.
I will now spend a few days looking deeper into your efforts, which must repeat I admire for the huge amount of research which must have been involved.
Just for a bit of information, I'm reasonably fluent in the German language. I've been looking a bit deeper into your page in Wikipedia "Freemasonry in Germany" and I have been examining the part "Origins". I don't want to edit this page, at least not yet because your researches are obviously so well conducted and it is therefore quite possible that I am wrong.
What I'm getting at is the first Lodge in Hamburg. If one examines the web-site http://www.absalom.de/geschichte/, one sees that this Lodge was, as you state indeed founded on 6th December 1737, but they claim that the Lodge was first called "Loge d'Hambourg" and then later named "Absolom zu den drei Nesseln". Is this correct in your eyes? Their history (Geschichte) page is, considering the importance of the matter, rather sparse in its content, but there is no reference to the naming having been first been conducted in 1743.
On a different note, we celebrated 275 years of Freemasonry in Germany in 2012in a cathedral in Hamburg and it was a tremendous occasion!
Thanks for your reply to my previous message. I have now edited the page with the information I have garnered. Please be so kind as to check it for me to ensure it is how you would like it to read.
As for the language involved, it is difficult to assess fully, but there are strong grounds to believe that you are correct in your thoughts. We need to remember that the French language was the language of the elite in many countries, Russia being a classic example. It was a kind of snobbishness and also a means to prevent the lower class persons from understanding what was being talked about when they were in the presence of the nobility. We also need to remember that Freemasons in those early days were most probably from the elite, so it is quite reasonable to presume that the language in the German Lodges in those days was indeed French.
I've been taking a closer look at the web-site of the United Grand Lodges of Germany (VGLvD) and there are some interesting bits of information in respect of the founding of the VGLvD. So with your permission, I have examined the articles on that web-site a little more closely and then added them to your page. They were of course in German, but I trusted myself to be able to translate these and just hope they fit in with your findings.
On a different note, there are additional bits of information which should be added to the page "Grand Lodge of British Freemasons in Germany" and this I will also do in the next few days. My problem here is that our "friend" might try to sabotage these, so I would be grateful if you would keep a watchful eye on the page (as I will as well of course) and undo any vandalism.
I would also like to work a little on the Women's Freemasonry section, but that can wait.
This is all turning out to be a really interesting project. I've been also looking at some of the other pages on Freemasonry where you have been busy. Goodness me, you really have been researching the whole subject - I'm well impressed!
I've tidied up the previous edits - I wasn't very happy with what I had originally typed, in that the text didn't flow too well. I hope you like what I've done.
On an entirely different note, I wonder if you have seen the film "The Scottish Key". It gives a very good account of the possible or indeed the probable origins of Freemasonry. It also shines quite a bit of light on Joseph Desaguliers and James Anderson. If you haven't seen it, I recommend it strongly too you. It can be downloaded for a small fee.
I wonder if you would like to continue correspondence by email. If so, simply send an email to coronatum.veritas@gmail.com, but if you prefer to continue chatting this way, I'll understand fully.
I am particularly pleased that you reversed the edit from the villain. I was going to do it myself, but was sure it would create a situation of him repeating the edit until one of the Wikipedia supervisors undertook major avoidance measures.
Once again the time of year and associated temperatures indicate that it is approaching Christmas. Although we haven't communicated in a while, I wish you all the best for Christmas and hope you see in the new year well and happy!
I'm afraid the villain has been at it again. I wonder if you wouldn't mind reversing his edit. As I have said on a previous occasion, I'd do it myself, but it would create a situation of him repeating the edit until one of the Wikipedia supervisors undertook major avoidance measures.
I've been trying to contact Forest Treekeeper, but I have a feeling he has gone to the Grand Lodge above.
Many thanks. I looked at the site this morning, which I do every morning and noticed that you had reversed the edit. I meant to write the same day that it was published, but got held up for other reasons and took my eye off the ball for a moment.
Yes thanks, well and getting ready to go on holiday to Egypt. I was resident there in Cairo for many years. I would have liked to have practiced my Masonry there, but it is banned by law, so I involved myself with Rotary which was quite good. There are Freemasons active in Cairo, but very much underground and although I tried to contact them, I never managed. Whatever, it's history now.
I hope you are also well. Do you ever lecture on Freemasonry?
It's a long time since we last communicated. However I have a question on an entirely different subject and I wonder if you can help me.
I am currently preparing a lecture on the Questions and Answers to be done by a Candidate before being Passed to the Second Degree and I'm stumbling slightly on the question "Describe the mode of your preparation". Most of points of the response are easily explained, but the issue of the right heel being slipshod is not. Now I have contacted one of our learned Masons in our Grand Lodge in Germany and he gave me the following ...
As you know, most if our ritual is based on the Bible or parts thereof. The part referring to the slipper is the Book of Ruth where in fact Boaz is mentioned. This practice began when there was a Lodge attached to the Mason's Trade Guild. This was from the time of Queen Elizabeth I when what we call 'Symbolic Ritual' was beginning to be created. All this early Ritual was based on stories and events taken from the Bible which, let us remember, was now translated into what was then Modern English and was much more readily available to families, schools and individuals to read. The story from which this incident of a slipper comes in the Book of Ruth which, by the way, was also the portion of the Bible at which it was opened when a Lodge met later in the Apprentice Degree. It was also the Book that spoke about Boaz which was again appropriate as the eventual password for the First Degree. The story goes that when Boaz wanted to make Ruth part of his family he made his way to the gate if the city where the heads of the families met. There he took off one of his slippers and handed it to the head of the family of Naomi in which Ruth had become a member. When the slipper was accepted by the head of the family it meant that he was in agreement with the person named leaving his family and joining that of the person whose slipper it was. So Ruth became the wife, or one if the wives, of Boaz. A slipper given was the sign of joining another family. That is what is now about to happen to the candidate. The Lodge hands over a slipper and the candidate by accepting it agrees to become the member of this new family of the Lodge. The slipper also means something else as some early rituals show. The question was once asked "What is that which you are wearing?" The Answer was " An old shoe of my mother's" and the meaning of that exchange was that the candidate was recognising that from the start of his Masonic Career he is indebted to his Mother Lodge for something needed in his initiation. He us at once reminded if that bond which is being formed between him and his new Masonic Family.
Now I have no great argument about that, except that in the Ritual there is absolutely no reference to a slipper. In fact the issue is that the right heel has been slipshod.
One of my theories is that it is because it is the part of that foot which is placed at a right angle during the Obligation - similarly the left heel is slipshod during the Second Degree Obligation, because the left foot is placed in the form of a square. Although neither explain why both heels are slipshod in the Third Degree. But one of my interpretations is, that the slipper is only worn because it is backless and that indeed any kind of backless footwear, like maybe a sandal, could be used. In fact, I believe that the Candidate only wears some kind of footwear for the sake of comfort, when he could quite reasonably appear bare-footed!
I wonder if you have any ideas on this subject, or if you know of any other learned Brother who could possibly enlighten me .
In the meantime, I hope that you are well and avoiding this dreadful plague which is causing so much woe in the World.
Thank you so much for editing Masonry related articles, from history observed you do your work dilligently. It is quite refreshing to know there are people out there who still care. Celestina007 (talk) 17:56, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Census statistics
References to the Office for National Statistics census data used in a large number of articles are all now dead. The University of Durham have produced a replacement website, Nomis, that gives access to the 2011 census data. Template {{NOMIS2011}} has been created to enable this to be used in articles rather than use the URL directly as this could change and allow it to be modified centrally. There is no direct correlation between the old and new URLs so a BOT cannot be used to switch from one to the other. See the template documentation for further details of usage. It would be good if members could change articles over to use the new method of access for the 2011 census and check that the data is correct at the same time.

Hello, Fiddlersmouth. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Happy Christmas
It is that time of year again so to wish all members a Happy Christmas. Just to remind members that there will be fewer of the regular members around over the festive period and that there are usually loads of new editors around using their new shiny devices to access the internet and try out some editing. Those who are around just keep an eye out for any vandalism and test edits that occur and revert as soon as possible.

Recent changes
As some of you will know the script for generating the list of project articles for use with the Recent Changes utility stopped working a couple of years ago so the list was way out of date. The good news is that I have managed to find a convoluted way of creating a new list using AutoWikiBrowser. The link for using the new list is Watchlist of recent edits. If you are not interested in talk pages then use Watchlist of recent article edits or for talk pages only Watchlist of recent talk page edits.

The Images of England web site is to be decommissioned this month by Historic England. The text of the site entries has been available on the corresponding National Heritage List entry since that web site was created. The images are being transferred ahead of the decommissioning. As a result of this a BOT has changed all {{IoE}} templates to {{NHLE}} templates and translated the reference number according to a list provided by Historic England.
It would be good if members could check these, when they come across them, as I have spotted one with an incorrect translation. Some articles already had {{NHLE}} templates in them so the references may need to be combined. Other changes that may need to be performed are removal of template or text referring to the site as needing registration, changing the text "Images of England" or "IoE" to something more appropriate or may be even removing it if it is part of the description..

Wiki Loves Monuments
September is the time for the annual Wiki Loves Monuments competition to get quality photographs of listed buildings and scheduled monuments in the UK. It would be good if any members in the Yorkshire area got out and about taking images of any monuments or listed buildings that they find. There are still several entries on the various list articles without images and it would be best to prioritise these if you are in the right place. Details for this years competition can be found here. There are cash prises of up to £250 for the best images that are submitted.
If you are not in Yorkshire then you are still able to join in as the competition covers the whole of the UK, separate competitions are available for other areas of the world if you are not UK based.

General Election
With the calling of a General Election will members keep an eye on the various Parliament constituency articles. Please check that the candidates are appropriately referenced and that they appear in alphabetical order by surname so that we do not show any bias to a particular party. It is also worth checking the settlement articles to see if they have the correct constituency shown.
There will also be all of the candidate articles to check to see if they have the appropriate term end details and text to show if they are standing or not at the election.

Thank you for making the Illuminati article's History section so deeply informative, back in 2014-5. It's so much more respectable as a historical study than more of a pop culture survey as it was prior. EllenCT (talk) 07:29, 31 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Brexit
Well by the time you read this Brexit will have happened and this is the tidy-up that needs doing this month. You can leave the constituency link in articles that use {{infobox UK place}} as the template will hide the field in the output. Those using other templates will need to be edited individually to remove/hide the information. There are also a number of articles that mention the fact in the text of the article and these will need editing to remove the information or show that it was only valid until 31 January 2020.

Destubathon
The Great Britain and Ireland Destubathon is running in March, sign up if you can help, there's nearly $500 worth of book prizes available so if anybody needs books for other topics this might help you out! The project has 5,550 articles currently tagged as sub-class, members could join in the drive and help reduce this number by expanding them up to at least start-class. We are not looking to merge articles but to expand them. In the process you may be in for a prize.

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote.

It is time to wish all members of the project a Happy Christmas. Though it will be a very different one this year because of the restrictions placed on us by the government because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Though there will be some relaxation of the rules for a 5-day period over the Christmas period it will not allow much of the usual festivities to take place. Hopefully the vaccination will be available early next year for the country to get back to some sort of normality.

Olympic and Paralympic Games
Happy Yorkshire Day, this month with the Olympic Games in progress it would be good to take a look at some of the articles related to Yokshire competitors. I have gone through and tagged those competitors that have articles and are born in Yorkshire, though there are a significant number that do not include details of where they are from. If you know ones that should be tagged then please take this opportunity to tag them and add relevant categories to their articles. Many are just a couple of line stubs and could do with improving to give some background to these athletes. Many are in need of photographs and there may be some free ones available to help illustrate articles.
Later in the month there will also be the start of the Paralympic Games. Another set of articles that will get a high number of hits as people search for details of the competitors and could do with work to get them in to shape.
Hopefully we will have more Yorkshire medals from both games to celebrate.

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote.

Article counts
The drop in the article count last month was caused by a BOT converting the assesments over for pages that had become redirects. Please remember that when you convert an existing article into a redirect to change the class rating to |class=Redir and remove the importance rating from the project banner on the talk page.

Happy Christmas
A Happy Christmas to all members of the project and thanks for all the work you have put in supporting articles relating to Yorkshire. The year saw much change, especially to the governance of North Yorkshire which became a unitary authority in April. This affected a large number of articles, but most of this has been done by those who are active. There is still many of the smaller settlements that need updating, so if you have time have a go at bringing them up to date.

There is an Unreferenced Article Backlog drive running throughout February across Wikipedia, it would be good for project members to be involved in this and help reduce the number of unreferenced articles supported by the project. You do not have to signup to be involved. There are currently 245 in the "Cites no sources" section of the project's clean-up listing that could do with some sources adding to them.

Hello there! Interested in having a chat with fellow Wikipedians? There's a meetup in Leeds on Saturday 4th May 2024, at the Tiled Hall Café at Leeds Central Library.
You're receiving this one-off message as you're either a member of WikiProject Yorkshire, you've expressed an interest in a previous Leeds meetup years ago, or (for about 4 of you), we've met :)
I plan to organise more in future, so if you'd like to be notified next time, please say so over on the meetup page.
Please also invite any Wikimedia people you know (or have had wiki dealings with) – spread the word! Hope to see you there.
