Re: Laughlin, Nevada article
Hi!
Not sure if I'm formatting this message correctly, so bear with me. I see your point on the crime statistics. It hasn't been substantiated since it was put up. As the Town Constable, I feel confident that the numbers are in fact accurate, I just wanted that extra bit of verification which Wikipedia of course encourages. I read your message. Is your objection that the source is from a profit making entity?
Thank you,
Jordan Ross, Constable Laughlin Township www.laughlinconstable.org — Preceding unsigned comment added byJordan Clements Ross (talk • contribs) 01:21, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, my objection to the Realtor's site is that it is commercial. My suggestion to you would be to look for crime stats in other city articles and see what they sourced them to. Generally, all information in a Wikipedia article about a city should come from a second party source such as a newspaper , book, or magazine. The exception would be completely noncontroversial stuff like the city's official address, etc. It, BTW, isn't MY objection. You should familiarize yourself with WP:RS, which is the policy on reliable sources.
- Unfortunately, your reply here has raised another issue. You have a conflict of interest on the article on Laughlin, as you are an elected official of the city. See WP:COI on what that means to you. Your edits are borderline promotional, and you, as one with a conflict of interest, have to be especially careful about that. It is important to remember that a Wikipedia article on a town is not a promotional tool for the town, but an encyclopedia article. City articles are to be written to a world audience, not a local one. The last edit regarding social services available is an example of what not to put into the article. An exception would be if Laughlin had some sort of unique social service program. Generally, other than the basic statistical stuff, what you want in a city article is what makes the city unique. The casinos and other things of interest to tourists are a definite for Laughlin. Looking over the article, it looks pretty good right now except for some "Weasel words". (The description of the library--the best looking building in town is strictly a matter of opinion and not encyclopedic.) Also, the section listing the service clubs and churches is not very encyclopedic. The town I live in in Idaho has all those organizations and only has 2000 residents. I would lose that whole section.
- Sorry to ramble. I really like city articles and am glad to help you make yours better. Please though, before you edit further, read WP:COI. Thanks. Gtwfan52 (talk) 01:52, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for advice
Hi there,
Thanks so much for your informed and very friendly advice! I have been frustrated because while I was researching pages on other organisations for guidance I'd seen much worse articles on Wikipedia with only primary sources that had not been flagged. What I'm struggling with is at what point are sources really deemed "independent"? Yes, newspapers, tv, radio etc. are, but these days so much news is online, and I have been sourcing online news sources. So I will continue to look for news sources, but I'm not sure which online news sources are considered credible or not...
Unrelated, I'd left my drafts up on my sandboxes, and someone has informed me that linking images here is illegal... do you know why? It doesn't seem to make any sense to me. But I will go ahead and clear my sandboxes.
Thanks! 50.37.21.238 (talk) 07:31, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Vandalism/unauthorized/uncalled for edit on my talk page

Your request for rollback
Hi Gtwfan52. After reviewing your request for rollback, I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:
- Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
- Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
- Rollback should never be used to edit war.
- If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
- Use common sense.
If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, seeWikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing!Rschen7754 09:11, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

Fuqua School

Thank you for your message. I welcome the opportunity to seek your advise regarding information for the above mentioned article. Since, I have documented news articles and books stating that the vision of J. B. Fuqua was to establish the school as a "model school," then how do I go about adding those articles/books as references. Can you help me?

Kudelski group article
Hi,
I saw your message. In fact, I understand the problem and you are basically right about the article about the Kudelski group. However, the problem is wider than just WP:GNG as these pages (this I know from a reliable source) have never been under control by the company, they were in fact created by some external entity with absolutely no relationship to the company. The problem arose when the company tried, a couple of days ago, to regain control over the page. The result is that the people that should be trusted about it have been locked out in favor of the original authors. I would personnally rewrite the whole thing, but the issue should be first resolved with User:Ks cyber team so they can regain control, maybe you know how to solve this ? --Eforler (talk) 08:50, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
- You are under a mistaken notion, my friend. People associated with the organization that is the subject of an article do not ever control it. No one individual controls any Wikipedia article. We do things by consensus here. The user you mentioned is now blocked from editing on Wikipedia due to their name, a name that implied a)A connection to a specific organization that they created an article about, and b)the fact that their name implied that their account was being used by group of people, which is also not allowed. Further, they should not edit the article in question, as they have a conflict of interest. If they get unblocked, they should post requests to edit the article on the articles talk page and the other editors will decide if, and how the edit will be made. I will be asking several other editors to keep an eye on the article to make sure there are no edits that seem COI. And I am not trying to mock you, but yes, WP:GNG is the entire issue. By the way, do you have any connection to the Kudelski group? Gtwfan52 (talk) 09:08, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
- I do have one yes, but am not at all involved in the pages we're talking about and not part of the people trying to correct the pages. You are perfectly right about the control and the conflict of interest. However, the result is just that much information on these pages is plain wrong. Not finding references on the web does not mean that something does not exist (but again I do agree that this is a fundamental and a problem is this case). Furthermore, historically the pages were created by people with bad intentions in mind. Frankly speaking, I think all the pages related to the Kudelski group should be rewritten from scratch. So someone with the correct information has to regain control over these articles. That guy will not be me however.--Eforler (talk) 13:26, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- I think you may not understand what Wikipedia does. As an encyclopedia, it is considered a tertiary source; that is to say that Wikipedia gathers its information from what others have written about the subject at hand. So that means that if all anyone can find about "Foo, Inc" is that they were involved in the slaughter of stray kittens in the 1970's, that is all that can be in the article. They could be right on the edge of curing cancer, but unless there have been notice of it, It can not be in the article, but the kitty's can stay,

It is not so much about truth, but about verifiability.Gtwfan52 (talk) 23:54, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- Which means Wikipedia will consider whatever information found out there, even totally false, is verifiable, so Wikipedia has a duty to add some credibility to it, right ? AFD Kudelski Group
Hi there, as an uninvolved editor, I have done some major cleanup of the article and was wondering if you would like to update or reconsider your position for the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kudelski Group. Thanks Tiggerjay(talk) 07:42, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry to say, but no. There is still no secondary sourcing. To quote WP:CORP, "An organization is generally considered notable if it has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources." You have done a lot of good work on cleaning it up, but that still doesn't solve the notability problem. Gtwfan52 (talk) 14:30, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

My Edits
Dear Gtwfan52, I received your message regarding my edits to the Findlay, Ohio wiki page. As a lifelong resident of Findlay, a graduate of Findlay High School, The University of Findlay (as well as a current graduate student), and a substitute teacher for the Findlay City Schools, I felt compelled to expand the "education" section of the page, which I feel is sorely lacking. Most of the information is from my own personal knowledge, but the specific information I obtained was credited to the sites for Findlay City Schools and The University of Findlay where I obtained that information. If my citations were not properly placed or in the correct format, I apologize. While I would like very much for my article to remain, there was another minor edit that was of more importance to me. Under "Notable Natives", there was a listing for a porn star named Brandy Talore that I removed from the list. I do not know how she ended up on the list of Findlay's notable natives, but she clearly DOES NOT belong there. Her own wiki page states that she is from Toledo and Genoa (which are NOT part of the Findlay area). It is unlikely that she has ever even visited Findlay if that is where she lived. In this area of Ohio, we take pride in out home towns, and Findlay is respectable family-oriented community. Persons associated with the porn industry (who clearly are not even from Findlay) do not belong on a list of our notable natives. If there was a "Hall of Shame" perhaps, but even then, that woman is not from Findlay, and the type of filth she promotes has no business being associated with our town. I am quite adamant that she be removed from the list.
Thank you--Ohio777girl (talk) 20:22, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

1. I tried to point out on the talk page that an article that was a list of lakes in Wisconsin was silly, but my ideas were opposed by every single person who responded. I have a cheap netbook, and the page loads just fine for me. 2. The article is "broke down" [sic] alphabetically. 3. According to the title of the article, this isn't a list of notable lakes in Wisconsin; it's a list of lakes in Wisconsin.
If you'd like to help establish some meaningful criteria for this article, please join the discussion on the article's talk page. -- Mesconsing (talk) 00:15, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
- As to copyright - not a problem. Facts can't be copyrighted. And the article certainly bears no resemblance to the report that is its source.
- In case you didn't notice, I removed the pdf file from additional reading because I added it as a source. Why don't you try reading the articles you attempt to critique before going off half cocked? -- Mesconsing (talk) 00:17, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

La Sierra High School
While I can't argue "policy" about a school's achievements, I think its pretty lame of you to wholesale X out a bunch of this school's athletic achievements. I've traveled a lot of high school articles that have far lesser, individual achievements listed, sometimes as the school's only limited achievements. Of course, I think a still standing national record is rather significant. Many schools derive their entire minor claim to fame based on the individual achievements of their alumni. You'd have your work cut out for you to delete all that material based on "policy," to the detriment of wikipedia. That said, when you do make an edit, short sighted or not, look at the article to see the additional damage you have done. You left the additional reference (that I had updated literally minutes earlier, apparently inspiring your deletion) as a missing ref, because you deleted the first, named ref. You are a very active editor, spouting policy to delete content. You are not a novice. You should know better. Trackinfo (talk) 10:21, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
- You have been here far longer than I. You should know that just because something is somewhere else,is not a justification for it being in the particular article you are concerned with (WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS). I have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. You are personalizing something that is absolutely not personal. You might wish to read the school article guidelines. You will find them at WP:WPSCH/AG. As far as Reggie Wyatt goes, the guidelines would allow you to mention his accomplishments at the state track meet as long as you get rid of the "weasel words". Even if he was the only one that marked at the state meet, no athlete "singlehandedly" wins anything. His coaches trained him, the team equipment manager washed his gear, etc, etc. He has a large article on the 'pedia already and he is already listed in the Notable Alumni section. Happy editing and I hope the new year brings you many blessings! Gtwfan52 (talk) 10:40, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
Speedy deletion declined: Superstar Santhosh Pandit
Hello Gtwfan52. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Superstar Santhosh Pandit, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: not a hoax, film exists, but I doubt it meets WP:NF. I found [1] which says it "has had a limited release in a few theatres across the state." I will probably AfD it, unless you get there first - it has previously been PROD-deleted and recreated, so it can't be PRODded again. Regards, JohnCD(talk) 12:50, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

- I couldn't find any mention of a band roster on that site, but I will take your word for it. I thought you were going to source the band's roster to the label's website? Frankly, that songbird site doesn't look all that reliable, but you can take it to the reliable source noticeboard and ask their opinion. I am not that good at band articles. You may want to go to the wikiproject on rock music and ask for an opinion. What I saw last I looked at your article was a need for notability, which you strictly have to use reliable sources to show. Gtwfan52 (talk) 05:20, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
