DYK for New Zealand Coot
On 11 August 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article New Zealand Coot, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the New Zealand and the Chatham Coot were likely hunted to extinction by the Māori people? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/New Zealand Coot. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Importance of William Turner (naturalist) to ornithology
Hi, if Turner published the first printed book devoted to ornithology, is 'low' importance the right grade? All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 06:47, 17 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, Chiswick Chap. I guess the assessment of project importance is fairly subjective with the birds project, especially with regard to articles that are not directly about bird taxa. What I have been doing is going through bird project tagged articles lacking an importance assessment and making a quick assessment. If you feel that Turner's project importance should be elevated, please do so; you presumably know the article and subject better than I do and I will not quibble with your assessment. Cheers. Maias (talk) 09:57, 17 October 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, I'll give him a 'mid', it all depends on so many factors. Many thanks, Chiswick Chap (talk) 11:09, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi! I've been working on Sortable list of islands of Western Australia, and came across the Montebello Islands list. I downloaded the spreadsheet used as a reference, but I can't work out how to use it to give me list of the Montabello Islands. Could you enlighten me please? Thanks in advance. Pdfpdf (talk) 13:38, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Pdfpdf. I am afraid that I cannot enlighten you on the matter as I am not enlightened on it myself. I did not have anything to do with the construction of that list. As I recall, I split it off from the Montebello Islands article, which it was severely unbalancing and which I was trying to improve, and created the list article to put it in. I think the list was probably put together originally by User:Ptilinopus, to whom an enquiry may be fruitful. Good luck! Cheers. Maias (talk) 14:24, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Low importance rated birds
Hey, I notice that you are changing the importance of some birds namely Ostrich and Greater Rhea, and I am not sure low on these is correct. Ostrich, in particular, should probably be a high but I would even think medium is acceptable. Anyway, I understand that whenever something like this gets changed you are going to get a 1001 opinions on the right way. I don't want to cause problems, maybe if you disagree emphatically, we should create a discussion in the Bird project. Thoughts? speednat (talk) 05:31, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Speednat. I am just trying to standardize importance levels with regard to bird taxa, i.e. species - low, genera and monotypic species - mid, families - high, orders - top. There is (or has been) more than one ostrich species in Struthio, so I would assess them as of low importance, at least with regard to the bird project. They might, of course, be of a different level of importance in another project - such as Agriculture because of ostrich farming, or Mythology because of cultural significance. Anyway, that was my approach. Maybe it needs sorting out more formally with the bird project. You are, course, free, in the absence of any formal guideline, to apply whatever level of importance you see fit. However, I know that this can be very subjective; there are lots of birds that have special meaning to particular groups of people, or in localized areas, and my approach is to be as objective as possible by using the taxonomy as a guide. Cheers. Maias (talk) 06:50, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
- That actually sounds organized and refined. I have always been a person of systems and rules. Barring a discussion and its results, I don't see a reason to change as of yet. I will probably instigate a discussion at some point, because there are probably exceptions to your or any rule system set up, any way thanks for the reply.speednat (talk) 22:04, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
DEFAULTSORT
Please stop removing DEFAULTSORT entries, such as with this edit. You have done this more than once, I would ask you to be more careful. Jan1naD (talk • contrib) 16:19, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Jan. I don't think you need a defsort template for such entries. Not all categories sort the same way and it is more appropriate to use sortkeys on the individual cats that need it. Cheers. Maias (talk) 23:09, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Maias. Not all categories are explicitly defined in this way. If you look at the article in question you will see it is a member of these categories:
- Mountains of Princess Elizabeth Land
- Antarctic Specially Protected Areas
- Princess Elizabeth Land geography stubs
- Wikipedia articles incorporating text from the USGS Geographic Names Information System
- only the first two of which are stated explicitly. If you need to change the way a particular category sorts I suggest you override it in that category but leave the default sort in place. Jan1naD (talk • contrib) 10:17, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Animals by year of formal description
Please do not add subcategories of Category:Animals by year of formal description (such as Category:Animals described in 1873) to articles at genus titles (e.g. Leptopogon). These categories are for taxa at the rank of species only (as shown by the parent categories Category:Species by year of formal description, Category:Species described in 1873, etc.), and should not be applied to genera. Articles at vernacular-name titles can appear in categories for both genera and species, because the same vernacular name may apply to both, but articles at scientific-name titles must be categorised appropriately. --Stemonitis (talk) 08:44, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello Maias, I saw that you created an article: Ravine de la Grande Chaloupe Important Bird Area Oups, I thought, what's this? This does simple not exist and nor ever existed (I live in that place for 20 years, did I miss something?? :) ) Part of that valley (not the village) is part of the Réunion National Park - yes there are also birds, but there's nothing special around birds, no sacturary (but the national park) and nothing elso. Best would be, you place it onto the delete list. Might irrate some users who don't know about this. Best regards user:Tonton Bernardo PS: just see the post above for Grand Bassin – Le Dimitile Important Bird Area - this applies for the Dimitile also ! That's a mountain, yes inside of the same National Park, and certainly there are also birds :) - and maybe also for the others from Réunion that you may have created from that web side. They have no status at all. Best would be: => just delete them. If you want absolutely to have them recorded somewhere, why not make a chapter under the Réunion National Park. Would fit better on that page. regards again user:Tonton Bernardo

Any help would be appreciated! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 09:13, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for May 6Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Primophaps, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Taxonomy (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject. I wrote to someone who has a photo of CB, but have have not heard back yet. Maybe someone else will see this and add one. Please ask questions about what I posted. I am still learning. Your suggestions are in line with what I found in other biographies. It just takes time to change notes into narrative, and to find the right balance when creating references. I have some personal matters to attend to, so I am not sure how quickly I can make improvements. I am happy if someone else wants to work on it. I am not used to collaborative editing here. I got most of these raw notes together, and I can add a few more bits of evidence to his bio. Could I expect that someone else, perhaps a better editor, would work on it for a while? I wanted to fill an empty spot, and I am pretty good at research, so that is what I have done. Now it takes different skills. I probably will get better at writing bios over time, but for now I am already starting on an overall classification of bird*/ornitholog* material on Wikipedia. Is it OK to leave CB, in this state, for someone else? If CB will get deleted if I don't clean it up soon, I will make the time. What do you recommend? Is there a recommended format for <ref/ref> entries for photo credits, for articles, for books? I see so many variations on the random pages I have been editing. What I found were many instances of print documents saved on the web by interested and related organizations - but not on the publisher's site, many places where CB was given photo credits, places where his work was acknowledged, places where his articles were mentioned or copied, and places where his job at BBRC was described. But I do not know the proper format for these kinds of citations. I have put <ref/ref> in some articles, with cite web, but only because the information was incrementally/substantially better than what I found in those articles. That is, the information was relevant, even if I got the format wrong. Are there gold standard examples of different types of citations? My plan is to struggle along and make incremental changes, hoping they are useful, letting someone else continue the process of improvement. Is that OK? Can I add relevant material and let others do the editing and formatting? I am fast at the former, and slow at the latter. I started to upload a couple of images, and realized, while trying to answer all the questions, what some of the issues are. I am going to try to get someone who knows CB to upload their photos directly. I found two pictures of CB on the web, in obscure locations. I saved them to my disk as a precaution, in case they are dropped in the coming years. But, only as a last resort. If I provide a link back to the original source, with an appropriate citation, is that sufficient? The upload questions were somewhat hazy. It seems, if you take an image from the web and post it on Wikipedia, if someone asks you to delete it, you do. Otherwise, OK? Can "fair use" be presumed? If so, then I could try to save historically important images and documents that otherwise will not be saved. I found a couple of documents in temporary archives that were written by BBRC, and related organizations, but no longer on their website. That sort of thing. I see quite a few examples like that, where ephemeral materials will be lost if someone doesn't make an archival copy for "humanity". Is Wikipedia that kind of site? I know it shows human knowledge, but does it also preserve heritage/knowledge that would otherwise be lost? I found the images on blog sites, where people were talking to the birding community as friends, sharing images and text they produced themselves. I do not know when the blogs will be purged. Archive.org and Google do not archive these sites as far as I can tell. If I don't save those images, they will probably be lost. I found two representative articles, the only birding ones on the web written by CB, in the google archive. It seems to be blacklisted. At least the editor gave me error messages until I deleted those links. So his ephemeral articles will be lost, unless he or someone else saves them in a permanent location. I was thinking about writing to BBRC to see if they would put their historical reports online again (they were there in the past). If you look at the bottom of British Birds Rarities Committee, you will see a long list of reports. I think all of those links are broken now. and that article is not very old. CB wrote in some of those reports. I think BBRC has a lot of interesting material it published. Is it solely responsible for its preservation and sharing? Sorry to write so much. I have a lot on my mind. The more pages I see and try to improve, the more questions I have. RC711 (talk) 02:09, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
