Star Trek

Hi there. On the Star Trek matter, I left a note on the ANI thread. I'm just popping by here because I left several pings in that edit and I wasn't sure if all those I pinged got the pings. No worries if you did get it, but there are several pings I should follow up from a while ago that I got no answer to if there is some problem with pings. About Star Trek and academic papers and books, do they get used much in Wikipedia articles? I left a note on David Fuch's talk page as well, but I've just realised that the Star Trek WikiProject talk page would be a better place to go. I might do that, but may wait to see what you and David say first. Carcharoth (talk) 23:10, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Where they're available they are. I've certainly used them in a few different articles, but I only have access to the ones on Questia and Google Books. In fact I used one only the other day in Zero Hour (Star Trek: Enterprise) - there's a paragraph under critical reception. That article is still being put together so there's a fair few gaps in coverage yet. Miyagawa (talk) 23:30, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
Sounds good. If I get back to this, I'll try and see where I can help. Not sure whether the approach of citing various papers in the Star Trek article themselves is sufficient, or an article giving an overview of academic trends (if people have written overviews). Thematic articles like Sexuality in Star Trek, though I might be thinking of something more like Tolkien research. Anyway... Maybe later! Carcharoth (talk) 22:08, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Sorry.

It was a misunderstanding on my part regarding the WikiCup...no foul play or underhanded tactics were meant. Vjmlhds (talk) 21:54, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

The article Daedalus (Star Trek: Enterprise) you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Daedalus (Star Trek: Enterprise) for things which need to be addressed. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Zero Hour (Star Trek: Enterprise), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page 2004 Emmy Awards. Hi, you recently promoted hook from Template:Did you know nominations/Darshan Singh Pheruman to Prep1. Can you please change the hook to ALT1, because that is the one, me and the reviewer agreed on

Thanks. --User:Vigyani 01:16, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

I've swapped out the hook for the alt, fortunately you caught that in time! :) Miyagawa (talk) 12:54, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015

Dear Sir,

I wonder about the reasons for which my submissions had been removed as many counted peer reviews for many other participants that are smaller than my submissions had been admitted. I ask for a convincing explanation.

Yours Sincerely, --Csisc (talk) 11:37, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

I've just gone through and checked every submission page and looked at every peer review claimed. There are no peer reviews currently there which are of equal size or smaller than the ones you tried to claim. There may have been in the past, but as with yours, these were removed from the relevent submission page. The smallest I could see was Wikipedia:Peer review/2003 Food City 500/archive1, and this size meets the minimum requirements. Wikipedia:Peer review/Lips Are Movin/archive1 and Wikipedia:Peer review/Oxford College of Emory University/archive1 are the next longest, while reviews such as Wikipedia:Peer review/2008 UEFA Champions League Final/archive1 or Wikipedia:Peer review/Sleaford/archive1 go into much greater depth. It is fine to add to a review started by someone else, but you need to add to it constructively. There is little to no point chiming in with a support vote, and based on this any PRs which appear to be this will not be valid for points in the cup. Miyagawa (talk) 14:11, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Question

I was wondering why I haven't yet received any points for my GA reviews? Rationalobserver (talk) 18:26, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

I've just had a look and there's an error in the formatting so the bot hasn't picked them up. I'll go fix it now and the bot should pick them up on the next pass. Miyagawa (talk) 18:42, 12 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, Miyagawa! Sorry about the formatting error. Rationalobserver (talk) 18:45, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

George F. Robinson

Is it still time to close Template:Did you know nominations/George F. Robinson? I think you have a backlog, right?  - T H (here I am) 13:01, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

I imagine it'll be added to a DYK set before the end of the month. If it doesn't then you'll gain the points next round when it does, as you're already safely through. Miyagawa (talk) 13:06, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
Hmm..Thnx..But I still have not received my bonus for File:Rho Ophiucus Widefield.jpg. I pinged the bot owner ages ago.. - T H (here I am) 13:32, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, that's a known fault at the moment. You'll still get the bonus, but it might need to be manually added at the end of the round (if I do it before then, then the bot will helpfully removing the bonus on the next pass). Miyagawa (talk) 15:52, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

DYK

Hi Miyagawa: I'm a new WikiCup competitor, in my first competition (though I've been editing on Wikipedia since 2007). I'm despairing a bit about getting points. I've submitted four articles at DYK, two of which have run and two of which (Jan 17 and Jan 23) appear to be stuck in limbo. What happens if they're approved and don't run in time to qualify for the Round 1 cutoff? One's been approved, and one's awaiting approval for an alternate hook. Is there anything I can do to bump the process along? MeegsC (talk) 03:44, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

I've reviewed the Alt2 for one of your noms, so that should now be good to go. From my experience of putting together sets, I don't think you'll need to wait long. An animal based hook fits into any set, but of course the problem is that you'll generally only ever put one in per set. A top tip for DYK - if you can make your hook quirky or funny then it'll get run sooner. The reason is that there is often a shortage of these, and editors like to include them as the last hook in a set. Miyagawa (talk) 10:51, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
Just noticed that someone else has moved that article with the alt approved into the lead slot in Prep2. So it should appear in the next couple of days on the main page, well ahead of the round deadline. Miyagawa (talk) 12:55, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the review! One question: what happens to things that run Feb 27–28? They don't appear to fall into any round; is that correct? MeegsC (talk) 13:51, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
Anything that falls in the gap between rounds can the claimed immediately during the following round. Miyagawa (talk) 17:22, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello Miyagawa,

In regards to Template:Did you know nominations/Dumas Brothel, I provided an image so it could be used as the lead hook. I suppose I should have mentioned that in the DYK page. However, could you perhaps move it to an empty prep, Prep 1 or 2, please? Cheers, --ceradon (talkcontribs) 22:41, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

There's no guarantee when it comes to lead slots I'm afraid. But I felt that the hook was quirky enough that it could work well as the end hook and it should get a fair few views from appearing there. Miyagawa (talk) 22:45, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
I was in the process of leaving a note on WT:DYK and didn't see your reply. Just wanted it done before an admin unsuspectingly moved it to a queue. I realize that it's not a fair bet that the hook would be the lead hook, but with two empty preps open, I think it'd be pretty uncontroversial if it were moved there. I could probably find a replacement hook as well. Thank you, --ceradon (talkcontribs) 22:52, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
Nevermind. Another user has addressed it. Cheers, --ceradon (talkcontribs) 00:05, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

2014-2015 GA Cup Wrap-Up

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Finals/Wrap-Up

The inaugural GA Cup is now over! The competition officially ended Thursday. Congrats to everyone who participated, and especially to our finalists.

The winner of the 2014/2015 GA Cup is Jaguar! He earned an impressive 615 points, despite only being a wildcard in the Round 4. The key to Jaguar's success seemed to be reviewing lots of articles as well as reviewer the oldest nominations; he reviewed 39 nominations in this round. Overall, the key to everyone's success was reviewing articles that had been in the queue for at least three months, which was true throughout the competition. In second place was Wizardman, with 241 points, and following close behind in third place was Good888, with 211 points. Congrats!

Although there were a couple of bumps along the way, the judges have thoroughly enjoyed managing this competition. We hope that the participants had fun as well. The GA Cup was a resounding success, and that's due to all of you. The judges sincerely thank each and every participant, and for the editors who were willing to subject their articles to this process. We learned a lot. For example, we learned that even with meticulous planning, it's impossible to anticipate every problem. We learned that the scoring system we set up wasn't always the most effective. The enthusiasm and motivation of Wikipedians is awesome, and we enjoyed watching what was sometimes fierce competition. We look forward to the second GA Cup later this year.

We reached many of our goals. See here for GA Cup statistics. We made a big difference, especially in shortening the length of time articles spend in the queue, and in reducing the backlog. Overall, 578 nominations were reviewed throughout the competition and a total of 8,184 points were awarded. Everyone involved should be very proud of what we've accomplished through the GA Cup. Stay tuned for more information about our next competition.

There will be some much-needed changes made in the scoring system next time. We appreciate your feedback, and commit to seriously consider it. If you haven't already, please fill out the feedback form here. If you're interested in being a judge in our second GA Cup, please let one of our judges know or click on the tab found in the feedback form.

Again, thanks to all and congratulations to our winners!

Cheers from Dom497, TheQ Editor and Figureskatingfan.

Hi, I saw your request at Wikipedia talk:Mass message senders#Requests for message delivery and would just comment Magna Carta is 800 years (not 1,000) & it was never signed - it was sealed.— Rod talk 20:50, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for catching that! Are you planning to go to the exhibition at the British Library? Miyagawa (talk) 20:52, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Probably not (works keeps getting in the way of wp stuff) but have seen others & we now have a wikimedian in residence at the Bodleian Library who hold several exemplifications, and contacts with the manuscript dept at BL. Still more work needed (and waiting on new books) before going to FAC.— Rod talk 21:04, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Nice! Would be great to get it there. Miyagawa (talk) 21:05, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

One of several of Godot13's quality submissions during round 1

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Australia Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

You may also wish to know that The Core Contest is running through the month of March. Head there for further details - they even have actual prizes!

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Coffee // have a cup // beans // 12:01, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Question

Hi Miyagawa- At some point, do you expect the bot to be able to automatically calculate the bonus for FP? My sole concern here is not to create a scenario where bonus points are added at the end of a round causing anyone to complain that they were not properly informed of the scores...--Godot13 (talk) 08:19, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

I have the same concern. We're discussing a solution that we can implement at the moment - basically a code that we judges can manually put on the submissions page which the bot will then pick up and transfer to the table - or alternatively you can add it, and we'll just come in and double check it. That way the points will be generated at the correct time. I really don't want to be adding the bonus points at the end of the round again, because it's unfair to both you, Herald and the other competitors. Miyagawa (talk) 11:31, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
Whatever works best. I have no problem doing the calculation and adding the bonus manually to each submission (subject to review, of course).--Godot13 (talk) 16:51, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Hello,

The above article, which you proposed for DYK, has been reviewed and approved. Thank you for the intriguing nomination.

Georgejdorner (talk) 20:21, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Tracy Park

I've been working on the above article which I see has been prepped for DYK; has no one noticed that both facts given for DYK have been removed from the article for some time? I've come here because I've no idea where I'm supposed to raise these points. Thanks for your help. Giano (talk) 21:41, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up, I've taken it back to the nominations page and asked for new hooks. Miyagawa (talk) 21:46, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks those facts were in the page a few weeks ago when it was a stub, and while they were probably true, the references were not totally reliable. Every English country house has a collection of myths and legends surrounding it. Sadly, many of them do not stand up to too close scrutiny - but they are good for the tourist trade. Giano (talk) 21:50, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Re; Space Seed

Laser left his review here and I'm not sure how to address his concerns—do you know of anything else that needs to be discussed in legacy, and do you have any additional info for the home media? Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 23:19, 3 March 2015 (UTC) @David Fuchs: Well I have good news on one of Laser's points. While expanding the TNG episode "Tapestry", I came across a source on Google books which talked about Paramount's repackaging of episodes repeatedly on VHS and DVD. It is called Why TV is Not Our Fault by Eileen R. Meehan, and the stuff about Paramount was around page 96-ish. I was concentrating on the TNG stuff, but it talked quite a bit about TOS releases as well, just I can't recall what it said. But considering that it was describing how they were releasing TNG episodes first individually and then as a box set to maximise revenue, I'm sure that it'll say something similarly interesting about TOS.

As for legacy, we can't add much regarding the Enterprise information as there are not a great deal of sources for those. That's why I ended up using the episode itself as a source. But about Wrath of Khan, we could talk more about Harve Bennett viewing all the episodes of TOS to find a plot to expand upon for the second Star Trek film. I also have my own copy of Voyages of Imagination now, so I should be able to expand more on the novels involving Khan. As for Darkness, if we could find some sort of source that compared the events in that film to "Space Seed" and TWOK then we could expand using that. Miyagawa (talk) 11:31, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

Good point on the Harve Bennett thing. I know that was covered in DeForest's biography, so I'll add that line in. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 17:57, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
Annoyingly that google book source doesn't have the two pages the relevant information is on. But it is on Questia, so I've asked at the Wikipedia Library to renew my lapsed Questia access. Miyagawa (talk) 21:29, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
It seems fairly minor insofar as overall comprehensiveness, so I've got ahead and started the FAC nom. You can append your username in as well. Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Space Seed/archive1 Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 20:27, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

DYK wikicup points

I nominated 2015 Football League Cup Final for DYK WikiCup points, however I note that it hasn't received the 10 points it should have for length. Is there something wrong with the bot? The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 08:55, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

I'll take a look into it once I get home as the prose size checker doesn't work on the system I'm on right now. Miyagawa (talk) 12:36, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
Not sure why the bot didn't pick up the bonus, but I'm afraid having looked at the article that I don't feel that your work on it justifies meets the significant contribution requirement. Miyagawa (talk) 17:50, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
I added the information regarding hook that was run. I also did a bit of clean up on it. I know it has been updated a bit since the event has gone on but my work came from when the semis had finished and the finalists were finalised. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 22:17, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
The user edit tool displays that you made six edits to the article over a 20 minute window on 28 January. In two of those edits you added some piped links to football clubs, another you added a bare url cite, the following edit you formatted the same cite, one edit you added the text "in a repeat of the 2008 Football League Cup Final" and the final edit you added an additional cite. Is this eligible for the Cup? Methink so, because it is over 1kB. Ṫ Ḧ the joy of the LORDmy strength 13:52, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Crusader Kings II: Sword of Islam, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Soli. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Mind Meld

Hi Miyagawa,

Thank you again for addressing the concerns raised in the GAN for Mind Meld. I have started an FAC for the article here. If you would be willing to contribute to the discussion, I would be grateful for any constructive comments you might provide. Considering that you have made only one edit in the article's history, I would think that you would still be eligible to participate in the FAC.

Re: deletion review at Commons

Sorry, didn't see your note at the FAC until now; have been working on an article with someone hoping to take it to GAN and with the folks who have The Tower House also at FAC. So you'll know if you need it, the deletion process is much easier at Commons than here.

When you're viewing the full file (not just the image), you'll see a link on the sidebar at left that says "nominate for deletion". Click the link and enter your reasons for nominating the image for deletion into it, then click "proceed". The software at Commons will tag the file for deletion review, get it onto the deletion review list and notify the uploader about the listing. We hope (talk) 00:50, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of The Magicks of Megas-tu

The article The Magicks of Megas-tu you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:The Magicks of Megas-tu for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. Re:Roddenberry

It probably doesn't have a copyright at all-that can be checked easily enough. I'll have a look at UPenn and let you know what the findings are. We hope (talk) 13:25, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Great, thanks. Miyagawa (talk) 13:29, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
OK-I checked original copyrights for 1939 in books and periodicals. There are no listings for the Almanac by Benjamin Franklin High School. What I would do, though, is to take the auction page and all photos from it to Wayback Machine and archive them. Would advise archiving each photo separately because sometimes all photos aren't picked up when you archive the page. Having copies of all the auction photos proves this is from Benjamin Franklin High School in 1939 (yearbook cover and title page) and that the photo of Gene Roddenberry actually came from this book. HTH, We hope (talk) 14:07, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
But youth is on his side in this photo! :-) There's another one of him in his pre-Star Trek days; he was a television director doing a print ad for Mutual of New York (MONY). Everyone lists it as being from 1961, but I've yet to find out what magazine(s) it ran in. When I do, we'll be able to add that to the collection. We hope (talk) 19:14, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Trophy redesign

Since you're part of the Wiki Cup judging committee, I wanted to submit a redesign of the trophy. I just felt the one being used now is kinda drab, and felt a more "Wiki-centric" model would work better...just wanted to throw it out there to see what you thought.

Vjmlhds (talk) 17:35, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

  • Thanks, I was wondering about a redesign for the trophy. Perhaps it might be best if we put it out as a sub-competition for a redesign, followed by a vote. Miyagawa (talk) 19:02, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
I'm game. And if we do go that route, consider my entry submitted. Vjmlhds (talk) 20:01, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

FP Bonus

Hi Miyagawa-

I can see you are trying a number of different ways to get the FP bonus points to register. Thanks for your efforts. If this gets sorted out, and either you manually enter the coding, or I do with oversight, I created this table which I will maintain as long as I am still competing. It should facilitate calculation and/or checking.--Godot13 (talk) 17:32, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

There is a code that the bot will pick up - I've Harry to find out exactly what that is as I couldn't guess it. Miyagawa (talk) 17:58, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
