This seems up your alley
I was puttering around with the ASLO awards and ran across this: [1]. I know you have been working on CEE women, but thought this oceanographer might be interesting for you. If you don't want to do her, I will. as it looks like there are plenty of sources to meet GNG.[2], [3], [4], [5]. [6] SusunW (talk) 20:56, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- Go ahead @SusunW:, she looks fascinating and you've already done a lot of the leg work of finding good sources. I wouldn't get to it for a while.Penny Richards (talk) 00:41, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
- I'll add it to the list. I'm hip deep in revising the Women's Liberation Movement articles and trying to sort out Mary Hayley. SusunW (talk) 18:59, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
- Okay, finally got back to her Caroline M. Solomon totally rocks! She created a database to standardize signing for scientific and technological terms to help deaf and hearing impaired students and teachers become more involved in STEM. SusunW (talk) 22:04, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
- Oh excellent! Glad you created her article.Penny Richards (talk) 02:42, 13 May 2018 (UTC)

A neat article - would you mind if I nominated it for the DYK? I plan to expand it slightly in the process. GregorB (talk) 20:54, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
- @GregorB: Don't mind a bit, I'm honored! She seems like a very worthy subject for a DYK, and the article can surely benefit from some expansion. Penny Richards (talk) 20:57, 26 May 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Mira Zore-Armanda
On 2 June 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Mira Zore-Armanda, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Croatian oceanographer Mira Zore-Armanda had difficulty gaining passage on research vessels because she was a woman? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Mira Zore-Armanda. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Mira Zore-Armanda), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Myrtle Tannehill, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Pygmalion and The Philadelphia Story (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Archiving this page
Hi, Penny! I'm a fellow WIR editor and would like to suggest that you archive this talkpage. If you don't know how to, or if it seems daunting, I can help you. We can set it up to auto-archive or you might do like I do mine and manually archive it within time periods (weeks, months, years, etc.). This is just a suggestion, however its current state causes a long load-time for some who wish to leave you a new message here. Just reply here, if you would like my help. Have a great weekend! — Wyliepedia @ 09:47, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you thank you thank you! I've been meaning to find out how to do this. I would definitely like help @CAWylie:! Penny Richards (talk) 16:32, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- @Penny Richards: Okay, I've set up the auto-archive for you, which appears at the top. Click the edit button after your name at the page heading to see the breakdown. It keeps posts here within 30 days or unanswered within 7. We can tweak it further once it cleans it all up, if necessary. You can always restore discussions here if you want. — Wyliepedia @ 02:19, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
- @CAWylie:That sounds excellent, thank you very much. I archived the first fifty posts just now, to test it out. Very easy! Penny Richards (talk) 02:30, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Myrtle Tannehill
I stand corrected on Tannehill's lawsuit to La Rue ["Grace La Rue Sued", LA Times February 11 1920](*several sources, see link). I don't understand how Tannehill thought she was going to win since Hamiton was a grown man responsible for his own actions and he and La Rue married legally. But I digress. It doesn't state if Tannehill won anything. Alienation-of-affections goes on to this day(*see link) and can be quite awarding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlYRBik3uf8

Monthly achievement initiative
Thanks, Penny, for being the first to list an article under the August Monthly achievement initiative. As you may have noticed, I have added a few details. Perhaps you would also like to add the {{Participant:Women in Red August 2018 achievements}}
box to your user page (unless you are waiting until you achieve barnstart recognition for five or more). I think a box on your user page might well attract more interest and lead to wider participation in writing women's biographies. I realize all this takes up additional time but it might be worth it.--Ipigott (talk) 06:33, 1 August 2018 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Mary Sophia Hyde Rice
Hello! Your submission of Mary Sophia Hyde Rice at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Yoninah (talk) 23:34, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Yoninah: Thank you for the heads up! I think KAVEBEAR got there first and did the bulk of the fixes, but I made a few more little changes, think it's looking good now. Penny Richards (talk) 00:22, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you. Please see new note on your DYK nomination. Yoninah (talk) 01:01, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks, @Yoninah:. I think the cut-and-paste expansion you mention was something @KAVEBEAR: did; if they don't do the template thing by tomorrow I'll give it a try (never done that before but I can probably figure it out). Penny Richards (talk) 04:33, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
- The Template:Copied was not adequately filled out. The diffs need to be added so readers can see exactly what was copied and when the copying took place. Yoninah (talk) 00:49, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Yoninah: Okay. @KAVEBEAR: definitely did those edits, so I'll defer to them on this. Penny Richards (talk) 01:34, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Collaboration on missionary wives
Thanks for creating article on Ursula Emerson. Do you want to add a couple of missionary wives to your to do list? I have a problem with starting articles sometimes since I overdo it sometimes with quality instead of just creating a start article. If you want to start these, I can add my stuff to them and then nominate them for DYK. Here are a few women that I have in mind that desperately needs articles:
- From https://archive.org/details/portraitsofameri00hawarich
- Lucy Goodale Thurston needs to be separated from Asa and Lucy Goodale Thurston
- Clarissa Chapman Armstrong
- Sybil Moseley Bingham
- Juliette Montague Cooke
- Mary Barker Parker
- Laura Fish Judd
- Charlotte Fowler Baldwin
- Mary Tenney Castle
- Melicent Knapp Smith
KAVEBEAR (talk) 02:22, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
- @KAVEBEAR: Happy to add them to my possibilities! I'm working my way through another alphabet run right now (which is why Ursula came up after Rose, Sarah, Thelma...). But once that's done (five articles from now, VWXYZ) I'll be up for starting some of these, absolutely. Happy to work with you! Penny Richards (talk) 02:49, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it. ☕ Antiqueight chatter 13:32, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
- As an aside - one of the topics I want to address in the event to be held at Octocon is how people who think they can't edit because of reasons (like being unable to type for long periods due to physical limitations) can still be major contributors - through copy editing, peer reviews, project rating, reviewing DYK and uploading photos etc. I note from your user page that you work with areas of disabilities. I thought you might have some useful insights or pointers for me. The major topic we are trying to address is lack of genre (specifically women and minorities biographies) in Science Fiction and Fantasy etc on the wiki. But we also want to get that diversity into the editor population and there will be a wide variety of people at the event with many different skills and abilities or limitations. I want to make sure they are all able to see the potential for their involvement. ☕ Antiqueight chatter 18:08, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Antiqueight:That sounds like a great priority for your event. And you're right, there are SO many ways to contribute beyond writing! I always suggest translation tasks (if someone is fluent in another language) or adding a ref (like #1lib1ref). It's easy to start with today's newspaper; is there anything in the headlines that could be added to an article on Wikipedia? An obituary of someone notable? A shortlist for a literary prize? If you have the newspaper in hand, you already have a source. Same with any reliable reference materials. I sometimes think pairing up two starting editors to work together is one way to get through some of the challenges. So, one does the typing, one looks at sources, one writes and one reads it over for errors, before hitting "save". Just a little more security, safety in numbers, for some folks. I'll keep thinking about this and add if I remember anything else.Penny Richards (talk) 21:56, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

- It was fun, and it added a few titles to my wishlists too.... whoops. Looking forward to the editathon! Just this week I wrote about Eva Limiñana, a screenwriter in Mexico in the 1930s, who wrote at least one horror film (Herencia macabra/A Macabre Legacy, 1939). If anyone can improve that from Spanish sources, I'd be thrilled! Penny Richards (talk) 01:42, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. California State Contest
Hi Penny, I don't know if you or Rosiestep would be interested in a state contest for California. Naturally if would include women bios but would see article improvements on all topics. We'll need some independent sponsors as WMF won't pay me another cent. Can you think of any institution in California which might be interested in putting up a prize fund?♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:07, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Dr. Blofeld. I'd gladly participate in any contest you propose, though I'm not interested in competing in contests as that just isn't my cup of tea. I'm not aware of any organization who would sponsor a contest or give us a grant in general but if I do come across something, I'll let you know! --Rosiestep (talk) 11:20, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
I'll have a think about it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:34, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
- Keep me posted, of course, that would be fun. I wouldn't have a clue about finding prize money, but I'd happily publicize any fun California stuff through Wikimedians of Los Angeles and related groups. - Penny Richards (talk) 13:19, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
- It would be! And so many notable landmarks which are poorly developed. As with previous contests good prizes for editing women bios. Washington DC area and California I'm considering.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:01, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
Sarah P. Monks
Thanks for contributing the article Sarah P. Monks! I've been adding some scant biographical details, but they are largely hard to find in reliable sources. Since you appear to have a Newspapers.com account, you might be able to find and clip the full page profile in the December 8, 1918 Los Angeles Times, as described in Vassar Quarterly (title appears to be "Hail Woman as Marvel"). Thanks again, --Animalparty! (talk) 22:38, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

Myrtle Elvyn
Quick question–how sure are you about her date of birth? I've got a bit of a mystery here-two rather dubious-looking sources say 1886: what seems to be the VIAF page on her and this website (apparently a digitisation of some contemporary reference book, but I haven't been able to find out what). Blythwood (talk) 01:45, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
- Blythwood I saw those, yeah; the 1887 date comes from the Death Master File listings (assuming she's the Mabel E. Bloch with a February 1975 death, and 10021 zipcode; her death was listed in the NYTimes so a NYC zipcode makes sense); seemed more solid than the 1886 guess. I'm happy to change it to "circa 1886" if you think that's better. Penny Richards (talk) 01:53, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
- Ah right. I think circa is probably better, my feeling is when sources contradict it's better to outright explicitly state that than leave it ambiguous why you preferred one over the other. (I've run into this kind of thing before, and even one case I can't find where we were reduced to consulting a calendar of 1928 to figure out whether "last Tuesday" in a newspaper was the date we thought it was...) It's a shame I can't find where that Grande Musica website is getting its text from, as it does look authentic. (Also, just in case you didn't know, the ping function is tied to a signature, you have to sign a post when you ping or it doesn't work.) Blythwood (talk)
- Oh yes, one other thing-how confident do you feel that the VIAF page is her and worth linking to this article? I ran into this when I was trying to activate the authcon tag. The one thing on there I could track down-a set of recordings of Wagner's music arranged for piano and organ rolls-sounds like it might be her, but I'm not 100% positive. Blythwood (talk) 02:12, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
- Blythwood, ha, yeah, I check calendars for "last Tuesday" a lot. I have zero experience with VIAF pages, but I guess that looks like her--the Sherman TX birthplace is consistent, and there can't be many pianists named Myrtle Elvyn. Myrtle Elvyn, aka Myrtle Elvyn Bloch (c1886-1975) definitely made recordings of Tchaikovsky and Rubinstein, at least--I found reference to it but didn't mention it in the article (yet, can now add); here's the ref for that fact: Hugh Hoffman, "The Welte Autograph Organ" Moving Picture World (November 22, 1913): 855. Penny Richards (talk) 02:24, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
- Great, I've activated the authcon tag now. Thanks for the quick response! Blythwood (talk) 02:30, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
- Excellent. Always happy to work on making biographies better. Penny Richards (talk) 02:37, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
- No worries, sorry for being so pedantic. Reminds me of Gracie Allen. (I dug it up-here's the worst case of this I've run into; my annotation as the endnote is a major chunk of the article's length... Blythwood (talk) 04:05, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

Interlanguage links... and more
Hallo Penny, A lot of your new articles have popped up in my notifications because many years ago I created the article Florence Nightingale Medal to which a batch of your recent articles have linked.
I'm something of a redirects enthusiast and have spent a bit of time yesterday adding lots of redirects for these formidable women, from all the variations of their name which seem likely - it picked up a few incoming links, and I ended up having fun disambiguating a clutch of different people to create a dab page at Rebecca Price. I don't really see the point of surname list pages, but they exist so it's good to get women listed on them, so I've added your subjects to those pages, or made a redirect where they are the only surname-holder.
Today I saw Lucy Minnigerode, ended up creating a surname page at Minnigerode, creating the article about her grandad Charles Minnigerode (and fixing a handful of mis-spellings of him in various articles, and linking to him, etc). But I noticed that you'd got a blue limk to Charles Frederick Ernest Minnigerode which was leading outside enwiki to the German article on him.
There is actually a rather useful template {{Interlanguage link}} (which can be abbreviated as {{Ill}} which is hard to read in a san-serif font), which allows you to make a redlink within enwiki and also a link to another wiki. When the enwiki article is created, the red link turns blue and the external link disappears. It's rather neat. In this situation the code would have been {{ill|Charles Frederick Ernest Minnigerode|de|Karl Minnigerode}}
. Just to show what it would look like, here's a version with a red link: Charles xyz Minnigerode . I suggest that it's better to use this template than to link directly to the German article. Hope this is helpful.
Best wishes - and congratulations on the huge stream of well-crafted articles, which makes my own set of stubby little contributions seem very weak! PamD 18:27, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you! I appreciate this note, because I've always wanted to know how to do interlanguage links correctly, and this is exactly the clear instruction I needed. I love learning new wikipedia "tricks". I will use this a lot.Penny Richards (talk) 18:35, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
