SineBot for Russian Wikipedia

Hello! Tell me please, is it possible to include your bot in Russian Wikipedia? And if you can do it, then we have two questions:)

  1. Is it possible to do not substitute templates.
  2. We have a user group for people that are authorised to close discussions at Articles for deletion pages. Can your bot support adding a special template to their messages if they are closing a discussion?

Thanks! Iniquity (talk) 23:55, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

SineBot disfunction: signing an unsigned post, but with an incorrect username

Here a new user called 1731kt posts and forgets to sign. Immediately thereafter, SineBot signs their post, but with an incorrect name (signing as "Jazzilisterwiki", a non-registered username). WP:CHU has no "Jazzilisterwiki" in the archives, so this looks like a mistake... Or am I missing something? TigraanClick here to contact me 20:25, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) @Tigraan: Jazzilisterwiki was renamed to 1731kt. The rename was carried out by the unblocking admin based on the user's unblock request. — JJMC89(T·C) 22:01, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

Any chance of having 10 mins of your time

Hi,

I am looking into some financial variations (not to do with wiki) and I was hoping you could give me 10 mins of your time to explain to me what may or may not be achievable for BOTS at our current level of technology or coding (language). I am not in the field of coding or anything of that sort but would be interested to know what could or could not be achieved with our current understanding. If you could contact me the questions that I have I would rather speak to you on a one to one basis if possible.

Thanks

I am unable to edit, but only at school?

Hello Slakr, I was unfortunately banned by you some months ago, however I have only not been able to make contributions while I am at school, whereas anywhere else I can edit.

I was wondering if this is because of not something I have done, but rather a ban on a specific IP network.

Please let me know what you think, and I ask if you would be able to unban me if this is the case.

Cheers,

DaBestMonEva — Preceding unsigned comment added by DaBestMonEva (talkcontribs) 15:07, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

@DaBestMonEva: School blocks are usually anonymous-only, which means you should be able to edit while logged in to your account. If this block isn't anonymous-only for some reason (it's possible I accidentally ticked the wrong button or there's really bad abuse), when you're at your school log out and follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Appealing_a_block#Requesting_to_be_unblocked (i.e., visit the IP's talk page at Special:MyTalk when logged out and make use of the {{unblock}} template to summon someone another admin to help to "make the block anonymous-only," which will let you edit despite the block, as long as you then log in). --slakrtalk / 06:49, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

SineBot signed a comment that was actually already signed

Hello. I moved a misplaced comment from a subpage onto the main talk page. This triggered SineBot to helpfully add my signature to the comment. However, the comment was already fully signed, albeit in two pieces: the user had appended their linked username and user talk page, and then someone--actually, SineBot himself!--placed a {{undated}} template after it for a timestamp. Shouldn't SineBot figure this out? I didn't write any of the comment myself, so it was a good thing I went back and checked the edit or I would've been credited with the whole thing. 2600:8800:1880:91E:5604:A6FF:FE38:4B26 (talk) 19:35, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

SignBot miss-signed

Not sure if this is important or not. This signature should have been LnZ3VpVeWh$Fs (talk · contribs). Instead SignBot signed Plaasjapie (talk · contribs), which is not registered. I don't have any Plaasjapie signatures on my talk page except for that one which I fixed to LnZ3VpVeWh$Fs. Not sure what happened. I haven't seen that before. Thanks for maintaining the 'bot! @Jim1138: If you look at the user talk page history you will see that the user was subsequently renamed, but SignBot got it right at the time. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:40, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

Give your feedback about changes to Special:Block

Hello,

You are receiving this message because you are a top user of Special:Block on this wiki. Thank you for the important work that you do. There is a discussion happening about plans to improve Special:Block with the ability to set new types of blocks. To get the best design and new functions added, it is essential that administrators who use the tool join the discussion and share their opinions about these changes.

Instead of a full site wide block, administrators would be able to set a Partial Block. A user could be blocked from a single page, multiple pages, one or more namespaces, from uploading files, etc. There are several different ways to add this feature to Special:Block. Right now Important decisions are being made about the design and function.

Please review the page on Meta and share your feedback on the discussion page. Or you can reach me by email Also, share this message with anyone else who might be interested in participating in the discussion.

I appreciate any time that you can give to assist with making improvements to this feature. Cheers, SPoore (WMF) (talk) , Trust and Safety Specialist, Community health initiative (talk) 01:47, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

Not running

@David Biddulph: It hasn't run since yesterday now. Last time I was aware of this happening, the bot had fallen over and needed restarting. However Slakr hasn't edited since mid-August so its unlikely they are aware that it needs doing. I'm not sure if anyone else can? Thryduulf (talk) 23:00, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
I've sent them an email, but their userpage says they don't always regularly respond to them so we'll see. They do say they're sometimes on IRC though, so someone who is familiar with that (I'm not at all) might want to look for them there. Thryduulf (talk) 23:09, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

Failure to explain

This bot is not explaining why IPs are being blocked! Can't it just leave the appropriate message? — Mr. Guye (talk) (contribs)  23:39, 6 October 2018 (UTC)

@Mr. Guye: it uses {{blocked proxy}} for all its block messages, which anyone attempting to edit will see. --slakrtalk / 20:37, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
@Mr. Guye: ...then it's likely not a ProcseeBot block or you encountered a MediaWiki bug/caching issue, as I'm pretty certain its block messages are rendering correctly; I just checked. If you point me to the IP in question, I can take a closer look. --slakrtalk / 21:59, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
@Mr. Guye: No, it doesn't create talk pages for its blocks due to volume + bad signal-to-noise ratio. What you see when you visit User talk:46.247.128.234 is normal (the block message isn't substituted in log entries themselves, which is basically what the red "this user is currently blocked" box is—a one-row log entry). If you were to try to actually use one of the proxies and edit a page, you would see the actual, transcluded message once it appears within MediaWiki:Blockedtext. --slakrtalk / 22:49, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Question

How long does it usually take for sine-bot to detect and auto-sign an unsigned comment? Can the times vary and by how much? Thanks - wolf 05:32, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

Thewolfchild, Slakr says in the section above: There's already a delay of about a minute or so on most pages eligible for signing., but for the pages listed on User:SineBot/HighPriority there isn't a delay. Galobtter (pingó mió) 06:04, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
So typically, after an unsigned post is saved, it only takes the bot a minute to detect and sign it? The reason I ask is because I noticed a comment had gone unsigned for over 4 hours, so I was curious if that was typical, a sign of a problem, or if perhaps the bot was down for maintenance tonight? Thanks - wolf 06:16, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
Thewolfchild, probably Sinebot couldn't detect that the post needed signing and so didn't sign it to avoid false positives: see User:SineBot#Where_SineBot_does_it Galobtter (pingó mió) 06:25, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
Ok then... Thanks - wolf 06:28, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

Proxy list probably being used by a troll

[4] was probably being used by a troll on the reference desks. They were putting in loads of questions copying questions from reddit each one with a different ip. Suggested at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Request_for_semi-protection that Procsee was probably the appropriate boot to have a look at it. Dmcq (talk) 18:20, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

I found this by putting in a few of the ips being used in quote marks in a single query to google. Dmcq (talk) 18:24, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
In fact there seem t be a few open proxy lists about. Are we actually using one at all? They seem to also have a system for removing them eventually if the open proxy is removed. Dmcq (talk) 10:11, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
@Dmcq: Thanks for the heads up; I've added the main blog. --slakrtalk / 20:51, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

SineBot might be doing more harm than good

SineBot is too quick to sign comments which are clearly vandalism. In this example, SineBot waited less than one minute to sign vandalism. It is much harder for recent changes patrollers to revert vandalism when SineBot has made the last change.– Gilliam (talk) 18:12, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

SineBot signed each one of this serial vandal's posts.[5] Why can't SineBot revert instead of seal in vandalism.– Gilliam (talk) 17:01, 7 October 2018 (UTC)
Had this at WP:ANI today. It's a pain in the arse when it gets in the way of rollback. Can't the bot just wait 30 seconds? As it was, I had to select a revision and use the slow "restore this revision process", which risks the IP hopping and the revert failing, hence making the vandalism persist for even longer. A time delay would be great. Bellezzasolo Discuss 15:41, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Sinebot delay?

Hi Slakr. This has been raised at Sinebot's talk page already, but I thought I'd mention it here, too. When Sinebot does its job and signs an IP post, it has the unintended effect of preventing rollback. Thus when an LTA uses IPs to hit a number of talk pages (as is currently happening), admins and oversighters are seriously hobbled in their ability to respond. Is it technically possible to introduce a delay of a few minutes between the unsigned edit and the bot-added signature? This would allow quick vandalism patrol to step in before that happened. Best, Vanamonde (talk) 04:42, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

Vanamonde93, a delay seems a reasonable idea and would seem feasible; what one could for now is put {{bots|deny = Sinebot}} on the ref desks and teahouse which would prevent signing Sinebot from signing comments on those pages which I'd think would be quite helpful when those pages aren't protected. Galobtter (pingó mió) 07:31, 30 November 2018 (UTC)
@Vanamonde93: There's already a delay of about a minute or so on most pages eligible for signing. I can remove the refdesks from User:SineBot/HighPriority. Twinkle also has SineBot whitelisted so that it skips over it when vandalism-marked rollbacks are issued. There's also very basic vandalism detection in SineBot, but since the revisions have been getting oversighted as opposed to just revdeled, I have no idea if there's any good pattern to figure out. Also, I'm updating ProcseeBot slowly to include some of these (as well as rescan old-and-detected ips, which several of those seem to be). --slakrtalk / 23:53, 30 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. The edits have been oversighted because they are libelous stuff, but disguised to remove words that might be flagged by basic filters. I don't know the first thing about stopping this (and I cannot share specifics of the content, obviously) but perhaps there is helpful stuff in filter 796. The issue is not with twinkle rollback, which works okay from a page history, but with actual rollback, which can be used directly from user contribution history but cannot be used after signatures have been added by sinebot. That's why I was wondering about a delay. I don't know the history of any discussion about this, but it seems to me that even a ten-minute delay on a user talk page isn't a big deal, but could help significantly with vandalism patrol. Thoughts? Vanamonde (talk) 07:01, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
I'm sorta concerned that someone seems to have decided admins shouldn't be able to see libellous stuff. I suddenly feel so inadequate and presumed-idiotic / incapable of rational evaluation of facts. I suppose, then, there's not much I can do to help here, neither from an edit-filter standpoint or a bot-programming standpoint. As far as the delay goes, 1 minute has usually been enough for the last decade or so, given the speed of anti-vandal patrollers and the proportional infrequency of talk-page vandalism compared to legitimately-unsigned posts. I can look into increasing it, but 1 minute's usually been the sweet spot to avoid edit conflicts with people who quick-edit their post to add a signature. It's also kept the high-priority list relatively maintenance-free. Also, it looks like there's probably some benefit to an IP rate limit as well, where if an IP is posting to talk pages quickly, it'll stop signing their posts altogether. Without proper tuning, this starts getting into pound-of-prevention-for-ounce-of-cure territory, but there's probably a reasonable limit. --slakrtalk / 00:04, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
I'm sorry you feel that way, Slakr; I assure you it's because of a legal requirement, and is nothing to do with your personal integrity. Indeed if you applied for oversight permissions I see no reason why they would not be granted. This request stemmed from a discussion on the oversight mailing list, where such an increase was suggested as a temporary measure to deal with recent disruption. If it's feasible, I'd be grateful if you looked into implementing it. Vanamonde (talk) 01:54, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
In any case, I've removed the refdesk from high-priority as a quick measure. --slakrtalk / 20:53, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, every little bit helps. Vanamonde (talk) 21:14, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
So a little more info on why it's 1 minute: there are edits like this right before this (separated by basically a minute or two); ditto with [6] and [7]; [8] and [9]; etc... these are just within the last day or so. It happens a lot, regardless of baseline page traffic. When the bot was originally developed, same-page edit-conflict auto-merging in Mediawiki was meh. I'm not sure if that's still the case, but it'd require more extensive experimentation. In general, too, the bot's also reluctant to try to make an edit when there's been an intermediate one to avoid accidentally deleting something someone added / modified. Long story short, I'm hesitant to mess with the delay/edit-conflict resolution code too much, and I feel like it might make more sense to work on updating ProcseeBot a bit more so these guys are less of an issue overall. --slakrtalk / 02:39, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
Well, I cannot, of course, compel you; but I will say that there's been discussion on the oversight list of asking you to disable sinebot until this blows over, because of how much delay it introduces. Have a look through Sinebot's contributions over the last two weeks for some idea of how widespread the problem is. Introducing a delay seemed like a better solution. Alternatively, is it possible to disable it (or delay it) only for a certain namespace? Doing either of those for the user talk space would help considerably. Vanamonde (talk) 03:11, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

I was in favor of this as well, but I think the other filters recently put in place have done a good job of limiting the attacks and we've been largely quiet on this front for a day or so, so maybe it's not so urgent at the moment? ~ Amory (utc) 13:35, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Proxy list still being used

I saw a whole lot of rubbish being deleted on the reference desks again today and tried the first two ips I saw in quotes to google "95.141.132.138" 178.213.0.207" and again it comes up that proxy list server list and lots of others with both of them in it. If some automatic proxy list banner that worked with those lists and enabled or disabled those separate from any list in Wikipedia it would save a lot of bother. Unsigned post

[11] I forgot to sign, a moment later, I tweaked my comment, and the bot didn't do anything. Is this probably a case of the editing being complicated that the bot isn't sure what to do, or is it a genuine mistake? No big deal, of course; if this weren't the case, and if it weren't down for maintenance, I thought you might want to know. Nyttend (talk) 00:13, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

If it sees templates, it skips signing altogether. --slakrtalk / 21:37, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

ProcseeBot smacking proxy editors

You operate user:ProcseeBot which blocks Wikimedia user accounts which are editing from a proxy and contrary to our rules on doing this.

I am a coordinator in meta:University of Virginia/Machine learning to predict Wikimedia user blocks, a research project examining past blocks and seeking to predict accounts which are not blocked but might need one.

In looking at recent blocks, something has changed in ProcseeBot's recent behavior in that it has begun to issue many more blocks than it did in the past. I am writing to ask for more information.

  1. Do you already have public documentation available anywhere about how ProcseeBot identifies proxy editors?
  2. What changed recently that excited ProcseeBot to issue so many blocks in the past few months?
  3. Would you be willing to have a brief voice or video chat with the research team here? The potential benefit to you is that if you can talk, then I can type the conversation, and will adapt that to journalism about ProcseeBot in The Signpost. If it is too much trouble to meet live, then thanks anyway. I understand your schedule is stretched lately. I am still interested in writing a little up if there is anything interesting to say about recent changes with ProcseeBot.

Thanks for any response you can give.

Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:42, 24 January 2019 (UTC)

It was actually a bit behind for a while. As sites it monitors died off, it had less to check. I recently added more, as proxied abuse made enough of a noticeable uptick that it was affecting the activity of another of my bots (SineBot), which is usually a sign of problems anyway. Also, if proxies are increasing overall, it's usually a sign of a malware boom. I've seen things like that like, too. --slakrtalk / 05:34, 27 January 2019 (UTC)

SineBot

Hi. I was wondering if it was possible to enable SineBot on a specific page to sign user's comments, even if in general the user's comments aren't signed? Like on my talk pages, I have repeatedly ([12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [17]) signed other users' comments for them, so that I could use WP:REPLYLINK to ping them. Is there something I can do to have all edits to my talk page signed, irrespective of if the user is too experienced to have the comments signed by default? It’s been a redirect since December 2017 (no edits since then) and not a lot of edits have been made in recent times. It seems like the page doesn’t need to be on the list. Thanks! Bot functions

Is this Template:Unblock-bot part of ProsceeBots functions? It is up for deletion ~ R.T.G 08:10, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

Blockage and dog products

Originally I was going to ask why is been blocked, but it seems you've just blocked the vpn I sometimes use. Which is good cos I behave..

On my other matter, I went to the page for a village near me https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C4%83ule%C8%99ti,_Prahova (which supposedly has an oak tree grown from an acorn that Yuri Gagarin took with him - it's a dubious claim) but the only link, about tombs, redirects to a dog product page and I don't know how to fix it.

Can you look at it please? John Decker NZ (talk) 20:27, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Indonesian Bot/Administrator

Hello, I was just wondering if there is any bot or specific admin which watches over wikipedia related to Indonesian's articles? Bot in other wikipedias

A bot like yours would be very useful on other wikipedias as well. Can you work at the portuguese wikipedia as well? Or can I get another bot like this in the factory it is produced? And by the way, why not make the source code public? This is a project (wikipedia) where everything is free for use! Bageense (talk) 10:59, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

I came here to ask about the same thing. I'm the member of Albanian Wikiquote but both, Wikiquote and Wikipedia, could benefit from that bot. In fact, at our internet age, auto-signing should be a function enabled by MediaWiki, without needing a bot to look after for it but since that's not the case, is there any way we could have SineBot at other Wiki-s too? - Klein Muçi (talk) 11:03, 10 April 2019 (UTC)
I also asked him to add the bot to the ckb wiki. He is sadly inactive these days, and alas the source code for the bot is not available either.--▸ ‎épine talk 18:43, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

Attack Ramon

I left a note on the talk page of the user but he has removed it so I am leaving it here instead. What I wrote in response to your suggestion that he agree to a one year topic ban is as follows:

I really think that is a bad idea. The sockmaster here had two separate accounts (NoCal100 and Canadian Monkey) indefinitely banned from the Arab-Israeli topic area in the Judea/Samaria vs West Bank arbitration case and has been socking around those bans since, yes that is over ten years and upwards of 40 accounts doing nothing but evading that ban. Im not even sure that an admin can downgrade that indefinite topic ban to a single year anyway. Beyond that, the user has repeatedly used his socks to harass other users, see for example Bad Dryer's actions with Malik Shabazz and Nishidani (I can pull the ANI archive links if youd like), and that sock, Bad Dryer, is currently community banned per this AN unblocking discussion which found a well established consensus for his indefinite blocking. And that was even before he was determined to be a ban-evading sockpuppet.

Bots Newsletter, August 2019

Bots Newsletter, August 2019

Greetings!

Here is the 7th issue of the Bots Newsletter, a lot happened since last year's newsletter! You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future newsletters by adding/removing your name from this list.

Highlights for this newsletter include:

ARBCOM
  • Nothing of note happened. Just like we like it.
BAG

BAG members are expected to be active on Wikipedia to have their finger on the pulse of the community. After two years without any bot-related activity (such as posting on bot-related pages, posting on a bot's talk page, or operating a bot), BAG members will be retired from BAG following a one-week notice. Retired members can re-apply for BAG membership as normal if they wish to rejoin the BAG.

We thank former members for their service and wish Madman a happy retirement. We note that Madman and BU Rob13 were not inactive and could resume their BAG positions if they so wished, should their retirements happens to be temporary.

BOTDICT

Two new entries feature in the bots dictionary

BOTPOL
  • Activity requirements: BAG members now have an activity requirement. The requirements are very light, one only needs to be involved in a bot-related area at some point within the last two years. For purpose of meeting these requirements, discussing a bot-related matter anywhere on Wikipedia counts, as does operating a bot (RFC).
  • Copyvio flag: Bot accounts may be additionally marked by a bureaucrat upon BAG request as being in the "copyviobot" user group on Wikipedia. This flag allows using the API to add metadata to edits for use in the New pages feed (discussion). There is currently 1 bot using this functionality.
  • Mass creation: The restriction on mass-creation (semi-automated or automated) was extended from articles, to all content-pages. There are subtleties, but content here broadly means whatever a reader could land on when browsing the mainspace in normal circumstances (e.g. Mainspace, Books, most Categories, Portals, ...). There is also a warning that WP:MEATBOT still applies in other areas (e.g. Redirects, Wikipedia namespace, Help, maintenance categories, ...) not explicitely covered by WP:MASSCREATION.
BOTREQs and BRFAs

As of writing, we have...

  • 20 active BOTREQs, please help if you can!
  • 14 open BRFAs and 1 BRFA in need of BAG attention (see live status).
  • In 2018, 96 bot task were approved. An AWB search shows approximately 29 were withdrawn/expired, and 6 were denied.
  • Since the start of 2019, 97 bot task were approved. Logs show 15 were withdrawn/expired, and 15 were denied.
  • 10 inactive bots have been deflagged (see discussion). 5 other bots have been deflagged per operator requests or similar (see discussion).

Sine Bot has stopped adding sign warning on user talk pages.

That bot is supposed to warn people who forget to sign three times in one day. I tested it, and it doesn't seem to work. I also see three or more unsigned comments for the same user on their contributions multiple times, but there is no following warning, either.Lurking shadow (talk) 19:39, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

I did some more research and this seems to be the last warning post by the bot, and this seems to be the first instance of a third post after that occasion; at that time that feature has ceased to work. I couldn't find any further warnings for the following three years.Lurking shadow (talk) 20:03, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

RfC about the MEK targeting civilians in the lede

Hi Slakr, thank you for closing the RfC about the MEK targeting civilians in the lede. I have a question about your closing remarks: Since there aren't any sources that conclude that the MEK targeted civilians, and since "analyzing sources and arriving at conclusions is usually not the job of the lead", then should such a major and yet uncertain claim be mentioned in the lede of the article? The body of the article allows for space to discuss this in better detail, but since there isn't a definite conclusion about whether the MEK targeted civilians or not, wouldn't putting this in the lede cause more problems than solve them? Stefka Bulgaria (talk) 09:29, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

@Stefka Bulgaria: I'm not sure in this instance, but usually the lead should, in ideally embodying brevity, be especially avoidant of covering things with undue weight, while at the same time it should be strict in preserving a neutral point of view. How or if that applies here is probably more of a question/discussion for the article's talk page. --slakrtalk / 00:01, 19 October 2019 (UTC)
Unfortunately, the Talk page discussions about this have led nowhere (hence this RfC, which apparently has also led to nowhere). Is there any other viable option to sort this out? Stefka Bulgaria (talk) 10:57, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

Cat Stevens.

It is highly inappropriate to use a bot to revert an article to a non-NPOV state.

If you want to discuss the edits I have posted sample texts to the talk page and that is the proper place to engage. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tanila001 (talkcontribs) 23:13, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

@Tanila001: You have me confused with my bot, SineBot (talk · contribs), who signed a thing you said on a talk page (something you should be doing yourself). To find the person who modified the article's content, go to the article and use the page history. --slakrtalk / 00:08, 19 October 2019 (UTC)

Signing is neither necessary nor required, so I don't need your bot signing anything on my behalf. I won't sign this either to prove that point. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tanila001 (talkcontribs) 15:29, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

Question about Talkpage monitoring

Hi Slakr,

We have a couple of unsigned comments (mine, mostly) over at Talk:Progressive Senate Group that I was leaving up to SineBot, but the bot hasn't found them. Does it only run once a day, or is it down?

@Trillfendi: Probably going to need to be more specific. 35.174.0.0/16 is definitely an AWS block (most specifically, 35.168.0.0/13 is the main block), and for Amtrak (or more likely their internet provider) to be routing all of their outbound traffic through some sort of proxy on AWS seems odd and expensive (but not unheard of). Do you happen to have any specific IP addresses that could be looked into? Also keep in mind we're more than happy to grant WP:IPBE for established editors, so if you do find yourself impeded by the block, it's not a big deal. --slakrtalk / 09:25, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

3 Questions

Hi Kurt, Sorry for taking your time by asking these 3 questions, but I really need help to figure out my next steps. It is my first time writing something touchy here in English wiki and as my first attempt, it turned out to be not that great. So here are my questions and I appreciate your help in advance:

1- I have proposed a lead for the article suicide methods in its talking page and a user helped me create a discussion here in wiki's med project to gain users' attention to take part in the discussion. Now my question is what could be my next steps if not enough users take part in the discussion? Does that meant that I have to hold back on my idea and leave the discussion or is there any other steps I can take if I still feel my point is right or if the discussion does not reach an agreement? Because what has happened now is that I believe the neutrality of the article is violated greatly. The article should be about suicide methods, but some users have put information about suicide prevention methods in it at the beginning. My point is that suicide prevention already has its own independent article and if they want, they can even create an article about suicide prevention methods.

2- A user in the talk page is using unfriendly and disrespectful language by calling people "under-informed". I kindly suggested the user that such language can violate Wikipedia:civility and is unfriendly. Now my question is if the user continues addressing people like this, what could be my next steps? Is informing an admin like you enough or should I create an incident report in the administrator's noticeboard?

3- I also feel that the user, by using vague and ambiguous language, tries to disrespect my nationality and events happening in my country of origin. Now, this latter is very difficult to prove as the user is using indirect language and I want to assume good faith, but I have some strong evidence that the user is doing this. My question is what can/should I do in these situations, where the person indirectly bashes me but because he/she uses indirect and vague language, it makes it hard to prove and he/she can easily get away without hearing an answer. Now, I'm not saying that it's that important to always answer in these situations, but because this has happened to me so many times after my immigration, it really bothers me sitting quiet and saying nothing. I can use their method and answer indirectly with vague language, but that's not how my personality is. I prefer brave and yet, polite, direct and front talking. So, knowing your answer not only helps me here in wiki, but also in my personal life. What would you personally do in these situations?

Please ping me so I can read your answer. Sorry if it is too much and thanks in advance.Poorya0014 (talk) 05:54, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

Requested feature for sinebot

As an experienced editor, I occasionally forget to sign. Just as frequently, I do re-factoring or other edits that should NOT be signed by a bot.

It would be nice if sinebot had an opt-in "notify only" feature where it would put a note on my talk page, email me, use the "ping" mechanism, update a page of my choosing in my userspace which is presumably on my watchlist, or otherwise remind me that I forgot to sign a particular edit. If it was intentional, no harm done. If it was unintentional, then I would be thankful for the reminder to go back and sign it. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 02:34, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi, and thanks for the bot. Please consider linking Wikipedian in the first sentence to give the page further exposure to mainly new editors. Thanks! (tempted not to sign this note, but will) Randy Kryn (talk) 23:57, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:29, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Post-signing

As a new editor I often forget to sign comments in talk pages, but I am also aware enough of this problem and I do rare enough edits to remember to sign them before other comments and usually at most a couple of hours later. I sometimes edited again to add the signature before other comment, recently even by replacing the bot's signature when they were faster than me, which didn't seem like a best practice. I believe I will still forget to sign comments a lot in the future and was wondering what is the best course of action when you realize you forgot to sign or to prevent this from happening. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Personuser (talkcontribs) 05:38, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I make a habit of previewing my post. You can "force" this by setting the "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary (or the default undo summary)" then getting into the habit of "edit, preview and check for signature, add edit summary, preview, publish changes." If you forget and jump straight to "publish changes" without adding the edit summary, it will kick you back to the editing screen, which is a good reminder to check your signature.
By the way, I'm also guilty of this, which is why I usually go back and read what my post look like after I publish it. I usually "beat the bot" to signing. Replacing the bot's signature with your own is okay, but if someone has replied already consider doing a "double edit" to back-date "your signature" to the original time. Just be sure to explain what you are doing in the edit summary. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 14:02, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

Todd Fitch

I've re-created Todd Fitch; he's now been hired as an interim head coach and would definitely pass GNG, if he didn't already in 2011. I agree that the original deletion was valid :). Best, Mackensen (talk) 20:33, 29 November 2020 (UTC)
