Introduction to contentious topics
[edit]You have recently edited a page related to gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practices;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

- Take your anger out somewhere else if you want to keep editing Wikipedia. We have thousands of articles about distressing topics and that is not going to change. Cullen328 (talk) 01:10, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- how do you personally deal with it? Doopliss 👻 (she) | Creepy Steeple 🏚️ 01:23, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- I never get truly angry about any Wikipedia article. If something bothers me, I either correct it or do something else. Cullen328 (talk) 05:45, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- if you do something else, what do you do? i know you’re an admin and im sorry if you’re wasting your time, im just trying to see what i can do when i get upset Doopliss 👻 (she) | Creepy Steeple 🏚️ 07:06, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- On Wikipedia, I simply work on something else, and there are effectively an unlimited number of useful things to do here. Otherwise, I may start preparing dinner, have a conversation with my wife, watch some TV, chat with friends on Facebook, answer emails (though semi-retired, I still own a small business), do some laundry, take a walk, go to a museum, plan our next vacation or take a nap. - I personally identify with the essay WP:FUCK. Most things on this website plague me for 10 minutes before I realize it probably doesn't matter at all in the long run. Tarlby (t) (c) 01:39, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- I have a certain mental aliment that makes these things plague me for far longer than 10 minutes. Please don’t WP:THERAPY me just because I mentioned that it’s mental. Doopliss 👻 (she) | Creepy Steeple 🏚️ 03:57, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- If that's the case, you may want to read User:Tamzin/Guidance for editors with mental illnesses. JJPMaster (she/they) 19:16, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- ive read that several times and read Wikipedia:Editors with obsessive-compulsive disorder several times. ive said that i try to use Wikipedia when i feel upset, but see more upsetting things which only makes me feel worse. And yet when i have to get off wikipedia because its making me upset, i have nothing else to do which makes me feel even worse Doopliss 👻 (she) | Creepy Steeple 🏚️ 19:31, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
