- Stefan2, here's a little bit of background on photos such as these, which are part of the Lackawanna Railroad's collection of glass negatives. This photo was taken on 23 April 1910 by William B. Bunnell, who was the Lackawanna Railroad's staff photographer. (He was an employee of the railroad.) The glass plate negative was developed by Mr. Bunnell for use by the railroad in documenting the construction of the Lackawanna Cut-Off rail line in New Jersey. This photo was never the photographer's personal property. According to Mr. Perry Shoemaker, the last president of the Lackawanna Railroad, who died December 25, 1999, none of the Lackawanna's photos (which would include this one) were ever copyrighted. Further, the afore-mentioned collection of some 19,000 photographic negatives was donated to Syracuse University in 1951. The Lackawanna Railroad ceased as a corporate entity on October 17, 1960. About two years ago (2011), the so-called "Syracuse Collection" of Lackawanna Railroad photographs was transferred from Syracuse University to Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where it now resides. Anyway, my contention is not that this work is fair use per se; rather, my contention is that this work was never copyrighted and, therefore, should be in the public domain. - File:Hill 3039 at Amman.jpg (delete | talk | history | logs).
- No evidence that the photographer has been dead for at least 50 years as required by the template. If the photographer is Guy Powles, then he has not been dead for 50 years yet. Unclear date and source: it is claimed to show what Amman looked like in March 1918, but it also says that the photo was taken in 1922, which is contradictory. Stefan2 (talk) 15:13, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
The photograph [File:Hill 3039 at Amman.jpg] was most certainly not taken by Guy Powles who is/was the son of the author, C. Guy Powles, which the first paragraph of Guy Powles article makes clear.
As the book forms part of the official New Zealand history of the Sinai and Palestine campaign it is a New Zealand Government publication. The book has also been published on the web here [1], so its in the Public domain. Please take these two files off the "possibly unfree" list, as they are clearly free. Thanks a lot.--Rskp (talk) 23:10, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
- Keep, the book this was taken from was published in 1922 [2] so it's PD in the US at least. C. Guy Powles died in 1951 [3] which would also satisfy PD-NZ, although the book has two authors credited, is it known for certain that Powles took the photo? January (talk) 20:04, 1 January 2014 (UTC)
- Keep - Alexander Herbert Wilkie (the second author) died in 1941 [4] so also more than 50 years since his death. I have added a link to his service record in the file information. I've added the PD NZ tag. Anotherclown (talk) 22:59, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

- Stefan2 these two files are well within the public domain, as they are from a New Zealand Government publication. [File:Powles p.205amman.jpg] is not a photo. It is in fact a map, so the issue of photographer is not relevant.
As the book forms part of the official New Zealand history of the Sinai and Palestine campaign it is a New Zealand Government publication. The book has also been published on the web here [6], so its in the Public domain.
