Etymology

From Medieval Galician Vermuy, Vermũy, ultimately from a lost common noun (vila, agro, castro, busto vel sim) and the name of a 5th-10th centuries landowner, Late Latin Veremudi, genitive of Veremudus; from a Suevic and/or Gothic personal name, from Proto-Germanic *Weramōdaz, from *weraz (“man”) + *mōdaz (“mood; courage”).
