Etymology

  • (Noord-Holland) Attested as Groote Sluys around 1660. Compound of nieuw (new) and sluis (lock, sluice). The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oudesluis.
  • (Zeeland) Attested as de Nieuwe sluis in 1840. Compound of nieuw (new) and sluis (lock, sluice). Named after a sluice built in 1750.
