[edit]From Middle High German *Pole or *Polen (attested as Polen m pl), from Old Polish polanín, from Proto-Slavic *poľaninъ (literally “field-dweller”), derived from *pȍľe (“field”). The Middle High German form may have been a strong noun in -en in light of polnisch; the weak form is then a backformation (cf. Heide, Rabe etc.).
