This is not exactly a request for a translation, as I think I know what this means, but I was wondering if somebody could verify for me whether "Qu'elle aille au diable" is correct French (and a natural construction), and if not, tell me what the correct phrase would be. It's supposed to be a dismissive curse - like "she can go to hell" (don't worry, it's for fiction, not for any specific real person). Help would be appreciated. :To the extent that you haven't got an answer yet, it is correct. |

:I suggest you google such phrases, if they appear in a regular text, then they must be correct. |

If you would like to have a word or even a whole sentence translated, this is the right place for your request. Since this is a multilingual dictionary in English, ask your question in English, specify from which language your word/phrase is and into which language(s) you would like to have it translated. It would be appreciated if those people providing translations added them to the entry of the requested word. Also see Wiktionary:Requested articles to request an article.

Chinese to English
There's a Chinese character on the bottom of one of my teacups, and I'd like to know what it means. Here (1 / 2) are two of my attempts to depict the character (the second is better, and NB that the box around it is likely ornamental and not part of the character — though it could be part). I'd appreciate any information — if you don't know the meaning, I'd appreciate even the pinyin or the unicode code-point. — Beobach972 21:54, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
- Maybe it's 壽. See this 寿 too.Oda Mari 19:18, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think so Oda. It looks more like 嘉. Is it a new or old tea cup? The reason I ask (and this is just a random thought, since I have no idea what your cup looks like or where it came from) is because 嘉 could be short for 嘉庆 (see: Jiaqing Emperor). The cup could be a reproduction or an original from that era. -- A-cai 13:21, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

This is a tanka by a lady poet, Onna no Komachi- Donald Keene's translation is as follows-
This night of no moon There is no way to meet him. I rise in longing My breast pounds, a leaping flame My heart is consumed by fire.
The poet is Ono No Komachi, the best translation I've seen is this:
No way to see him on this moonless night--- I lie awake longing, burning, breasts racing fire, heart in flames.

Let-off
What does let-off mean?
Is there a list of phrasal verbs?
Thanks
- It depends on how it’s used. "He let off steam" means that he did something energetic to release inner tension and stress. "After his arrest, he was let off with a reprimand" means that he was released with little or no punishment. I cannot think of a case that would be hyphenated, however. Some people do hyphenate phrasal verbs as a matter of course, but this practice is considered illiterate. —Stephen 13:31, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
- It might be hyphenated as a noun. Eg "What a let-off!", indicating that someone escaped without due punishment. Widsith 11:07, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
plain cheese in French ?
plain cheese in French, the exact name, not "fromage simple" nor "fromage plain" Thanks
- What does "plain cheese" even mean? I don’t think I’ve heard that expression before. —Stephen 12:21, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
"Fromage" with no fuss. The expression "plain cheese" means easy going
- If "plain cheese" means "easy going", what does "fromage with no fuss" mean? The best that I am able to understand you, you seem to be looking for nonchalant or pépère. They mean easy going, but having nothing to do with cheese. If you’re talking about some kind of cheese, then I have no idea what you are saying. —Stephen 17:32, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
Latin phrase needs shortening for tattoo
I wish to get the following latin phrase: Audi, Vide, Tace, Si Vis Vivere in Pace. Which in English means: “Hear See be Silent if you would live in Peace" But it is a bit on the long side, I need help shortening it but retaining the meaning for a tattoo. Please help. Perhaps just-Hear, See, Be silent to live in peace.
- You would have to cut something substantial. Literally, the Latin reads "hear, see, silent, if want live in peace". The minor English words such as "be", "you", "would" and "to" are expressed only implicitly in the Latin grammar. You could drop the last two words, "in pace" (in peace) without changing the meaning very much. Otherwise, you have to drop "hear", "see", "be silent", or "if you would live in peace" (one of the four). —Stephen 19:18, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Oriya
Hi, My friends and I are sponsoring a child in India, and were wanting to write to her in some of her own language, which is Oriya. We were wondering if anyone knew some phrases in Oriya which would be useful,(like hello, how are you?,ect.) as we cannot find an English-Oriya translator on the internet. thank-you :)
Hello, tume kemiti achha? (how are you)---Pradeep
- Oriya (or in Oriya, ଓଡ଼ିଆ) has its own script, which requires Oriya fonts and an Oriya keyboard driver. The script is syllabic rather than alphabetic, and some vowels are placed BEFORE the consonant that they are spoken AFTER, which is a difficult concept for Americans. You can get some spoken Oriya phrases at http://www.languageshome.com/English-Oriya.htm but they are written in the English alphabet. You can see the Oriya alphabet at http://www.omniglot.com/writing/oriya.htm. Hope this helps. —Stephen 15:57, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi, what is the literal translation of "via corinas inundum"? (taken from Sliders, Eggheads episode, well-nigh the end of the episode, Kevin, as he jumps through the wormhole, flings this towards the Latin-loving-mobster) Thanks.
- I cannot find corinas or anything like it in my Latin dictionaries. I know via is "road, path, method" and inundum looks like it comes from the verb "overflow, inundate, flood", but it's incorrectly constructed. So, if you've written correctly what was said, then that's as much as I can help. --EncycloPetey 14:50, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

"something suttle" translated to danish or exsplained in english
- do you mean "something subtle"? --EncycloPetey 01:01, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
- "noget upåfaldende" would be one explanation, the semantic span is quite large. Something is "noget", but subtle can mean a lot of things, it can mean "not easily noticed" but with many possible overtones from devious to just not overly noticeable.--Axegern 12:19, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
Translate into latin
I am my beloved's my beloved is mine. Amans amantis utrique sumus. I am truly uncertain about this one. I do not think Latin would render this as it is rendered here, as it would create a redundant "my is my" construction which loses the meaning of the sentence. This rendering is literally "We are each the lover of the lover" which I think conveys roughly the same sentiment.

Hi, how would you translate 邷么儿 into english? (Pinyin as well) Thanks. -- unsigned
- The Pinyin would be "wǎ yāo er", but I don’t know what 邷 means. -- unsigned
- Actually, I believe the pinyin should be "wǎ mer" (the trad. Chinese is 邷麼兒, and 麼 does not have an alternative pronunciation of yāo, as is the case with 么, its simplified equivalent). This is an archaic word (verb+object) which appears in Chapter one of Journey to the West, one of China's four classic novels. It refers to a children's game involving either small pebbles or pieces of tile (it is also known as 抓子儿).[1] One English translation of the novel renders it as "playing knucklebones."[2] Based on the description of 抓子兒 in Guoyu Cidian on-line Chinese dictionary,[3] "playing knucklebones" (or "playing jackstones") seems like a reasonable translation. 邷 can mean several things. In this case, it is a verb meaning "to grab" (抓). -- A-cai 12:03, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

kiosk - from what nationality/country did the word kiosk originate?
I realize the word kiosk has many similar meanings, such as being used as an employment application station, amusement park information booth, small gifts kiosk, airline ticket sales, movie tickets, etc. I was wondering if anyone might know the nationality from which it originated.
- If you look under the entry for kiosk, you'll see it came into English from French. However, the French got it from the Turks, who borrowed the term from the Persians. --EncycloPetey 01:41, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

- As Unicode, it does not mean anything. It is a proprietary code that was used for some language in the days of Win95 and Win98. In order to see it correctly, you have to change it to the appropriate font. There is no way for us to know what the font was or what the language is. —Stephen 13:01, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

what does que pases buenas noches mean? — This unsigned comment was added by 68.205.62.74 (talk) at 04:32, 26 November 2007.
- (deprecated template usage) que pases buenas noches is a longer, slightly more formal variation of (deprecated template usage) buenas noches, although it is directed to someone you would address as (deprecated template usage) tú. (Compare it with (deprecated template usage) que pase buenas noches, which means the same thing but is more formal because it is directed toward someone addressed as (deprecated template usage) usted.) - Additionally, it is usually said to young children by their parents, as a way to calm them before they get asleep.

- We don’t mind doing a word or two for you for free, but the above Arabic text will cost US$800.00 for an English translation. —Stephen 17:35, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
- Just use an online translator. Google will do it for free, in chunks or by sentences. There are better translators out there, probably, but I'm too lazy. [4] Phantommine 15:51, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

- "Yugoslavian" language doesn't exist, this is pure Serbian. Style indicates upper level of literacy. Anyway, translation would be something like this: I got totally confused :) I Had no idea that you're (originating) from here... I don't know what pictures are concerned... Anyway, the songs on the profile sound too good! I found some other songs on the site and they're great too... I don't know what more to say, I'm a bit surprised. --Ivan Štambuk 18:04, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

- Are you looking for the Serbian translations? If so, our entry for (deprecated template usage) mother gives (deprecated template usage) мајка (majka) and (deprecated template usage) матер (mater) as the its Serbian translations. Our entry for (deprecated template usage) friend now gives (deprecated template usage) друг (drug) as a Serbian translation, although that translation has not yet been checked. Rod (A. Translation help
RobbieG 01:22, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
- To the extent that you haven't got an answer yet, it is correct.
- I suggest you google such phrases, if they appear in a regular text, then they must be correct.
- This might even help you see the context in which they are used.

cement itself in french
Hi,
In the sentence "PPP seemed to have cemented itself a status as the strongest Opposition Party" from United Developpement Party, may be se construire ???
thks Serpicozaure 07:50, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- Mmm...I am not a native speaker, but I have never seen se construire used that way - to me it would mean "built for itself" rather than "made itself into". I would probably say something like, Il semblait qu'ils avaient cimenté leur standing... etc. Widsith 08:11, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
Thks, but sounds weird for a native speaker :), specially in that context, but thks to try anyway Serpicozaure 08:44, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

"My Love"
My boyfriend is Chinese and as i'm very language curious i asked him what "my love" (as in person. "You, my love") would be and he doesn't know what it would go to so if someone could please help that'd be very much appreciated. I did an online translator and came up with chinese-traditional of 我的愛 which the pinyin is roughly "wǒ de ài" translating into i(me-myself) of love but i wish to be sure if that's correct or not... I'd like it in Cantonese, Mandarin, AND japanese (romaji and character) if possible. For chinese, please include pinyin and chinese-traditional. Merci. -mari

French formulaic/idiomatic phrases
- "dis donc" or "dis donc!"
- "à vous vous"
translation?
- "dis donc" (do tell). In "à vous vous" I think there is something missing. —Stephen 19:38, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
- I also noticed that "bravo" has no entry for French. It's a cognate in several different languages, and I'm fairly sure this is the case for French. If someone could verify this and/or add this to the entry for "bravo", then I'd say "Bravo".

- Je pense que tu es très belle, et je tiens à te baiser (zhuh ponse kuh tyoo eh treh bell, eh zhuh tyen ah tuh bayzay) —Stephen 15:07, 1 April 2008 (UTC).

- Absolutely. —Stephen 15:37, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
I hope this "translation" was understood as the April fool's joke it was. For those who care for a translation more suited to the hypothetical circumstances, here are the two versions, according to whether you are on a "tu" or a "vous" footing:
- je te trouve très jolie et j'ai envie de t'embrasser
- je vous trouve très belle et je voudrais vous embrasser

Translate these English sentences into Japanese using the English alphabet?
I do not know much Japanese myself, but I know a bit about Japanese culture, which inspired me to write a story. Unfortunately, I need one character to say a few things in Japanese. Things I don't know how to say. This is for a project in my Creative Writing class, and we are working with dynamic dialogue skills. I have a thing about doing things right, so I decided to get the dialogue properly translated. Please help me?
These are what I need translated, in order:
1. "I don't know him. He just followed me home one day."
2. "My first day here and I'm already Public Enemy Number One. Fantastic."
3. "I promised myself and my counselor I would not do this... HEY! WHAT'RE YOU DOING?!"
4. "Please tell me he didn't just do that."
5. "Mom is going to know about this if it kills me."
6. "Why did I let him come with me? Why?!"
7. "What the heck was THAT?!"
8. "YOU DIRTY, ROTTEN, LYING LITTLE RAT!!"
and finally...
9. "Must... resist urge... to strangle."
I need these translated into JAPANESE WORDS USING ENGLISH CHARACTERS. Thank-you! Or, uhm, arigato gozaimasu!
