Inherited from Proto-Slavic *čerda, cognate with Slovene čreda, Serbo-Croatian чре́да/čréda, Russian череда́ (čeredá, sequence). Non-Slavic cognates include Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌳𐌰 (hairda), Welsh cordd (group).
