Ancient Greek

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Traditionally connected with κέρας (kéras, horn). The chickpea meaning possibly relates to Latin cicer (chickpea), Old Armenian սիսեռն (siseṙn, chickpea). Beekes argues for an original meaning of “curved”, comparing Lithuanian kreivas, Old East Slavic кривъ (krivŭ).
