[edit]Borrowed from Persian فتیله with metathesis, from Arabic فَتِيلَة (fatīla).
Compare with Kazakh білте (bılte), Southern Altai мылта (mïlta), мулта (multa) Crimean Tatar melte, Kumyk мелте (melte, “wick”), Uzbek pilta (“wick”), Uyghur پىلتە (pilte, “wick”); also Tajik пилта (pilta, “wick”).
