Etymology

From Middle Persian [script needed] (hngʾm /⁠hangām⁠/, time, occasion); by surface analysis, هن (han, alternative form of همـ (ham-, co-)) +‎ گام (gām, step).[1] Akin to Old Armenian հանգամանք (hangamankʻ, details, circumstances, way), an Iranian borrowing.
