Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀙𑀺𑀝𑁆 (*chiṭ). Related to छींटना (chī̃ṭnā, “to splash, scatter”), छिड़कना (chiṛaknā). Probably unrelated to Sanskrit चित्र (citra, “spotted”), whence चीता (cītā, “cheetah”).
