Etymology

[edit]

Of uncertain origin. Usually derived from Proto-Indo-Aryan *paḷṭas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *paltas (whence Persian پرده (parde, curtain, veil)), from Proto-Indo-European *pol-to-s, from *pel- (to cover, wrap; hide, cloth). This would make the term cognate with Proto-Slavic *poltьno (linen, cloth), Ancient Greek πέλτη (péltē, a small leather shield). Alternatively, borrowed from substrate.

Likely related to पटल (paṭala, roof) and पट्ट (paṭṭa, slab, cloth).
