[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old Bengali ধুঁআ (dhũẇā), from Prakrit 𑀥𑀼𑀁𑀅𑀓 (dhuṃaka), from 𑀥𑀼𑀁𑀅 (dhuṃa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit ধূম (dhūma), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰuHmás, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰuh₂mós (“smoke”), from the root *dʰewh₂-. Doublet of ধূম (dhum, “smoke”), ধূসর (dhūsor, “gray, grey”), and ধুলো (dhulō, “dust”). . Cognate with Assamese ধোঁৱা (dhü̃a), Hindi धुआँ (dhuā̃), Sylheti ꠗꠥꠝꠣ (dúma).
