Borrowed from Kannada ಬಯಲು (bayalu); ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *wayal (open space, field). Cognate with Kannada ಬಯಲು (bayalu), Malayalam വയൽ (vayal) and Tamil வயல் (vayal).
