Glyph origin

[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *baːŋ, *baŋ) : semantic (door) + phonetic (OC *paŋ, *baŋ).

Also could be an ideogrammic compound (會意会意) : (door) + (homonym of (OC *baːŋ, “side”)), as it originally referred to one of the two rooms beside the central room (side room).

Etymology 1

[edit]

Etymology not certain. Probably Sino-Tibetan; compare Tibetan བང་བ (bang ba, storeroom; storehouse), Burmese ဝင်း (wang:, enclosure) (Bodman, 1980). Alternatively, compare Tibetan བྲང (brang, house) (as in ཕོ་བྲང (pho brang, palace) and བྲང་ཁང (brang khang, dwelling house)) (Schuessler, 2007).
