[edit]From Proto-Hellenic *(h)méřřomai, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)mer- (“to assign, allot”).[1] See also Latin mereō, merx and Hittite 𒈥𒀝𒍣 (mar-ak-zi /marktsi/, “to divide”).
