From Middle Persian; compare Middle Persian pgtʾm, Manichaean Middle Persian pygʾm, Sogdian [script needed] (patγām), Northern Kurdish pêxemet (“sake, in the name of”), pêxem (“barrier, obstacle; from the sense of "come against"”), Central Kurdish پێخەم (pêxem, “barrier, hindrance; answer”). Ultimately from Old Iranian *pati-gāma-, from Proto-Iranian *pati- (“against”) + a formation derived from Proto-Iranian *gam- (“to come”), the latter from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gam-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷem- (“to come, step”). Compare also Iranian borrowings: Old Armenian պատգամ (patgam), Aramaic פתגמא, Classical Syriac ܦܬܓܡܐ (peṯəḡāmāʾ), Classical Mandaic ࡐࡅࡂࡃࡀࡌࡀ (pugdāmā), Hebrew פִּתְגָּם (piṯgām).
