Etymology

[edit]

From Middle Persian; compare Middle Persian pgtʾm, Manichaean Middle Persian pygʾm, Sogdian [script needed] (patγām), Northern Kurdish pêxemet (sake, in the name of), pêxem (barrier, obstacle; from the sense of "come against"), Central Kurdish پێخەم (pêxem, barrier, hindrance; answer). Ultimately from Old Iranian *pati-gāma-, from Proto-Iranian *pati- (against) + a formation derived from Proto-Iranian *gam- (to come), the latter from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gam-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷem- (to come, step). Compare also Iranian borrowings: Old Armenian պատգամ (patgam), Aramaic פתגמא, Classical Syriac ܦܬܓܡܐ (peṯəḡāmāʾ), Classical Mandaic ࡐࡅࡂࡃࡀࡌࡀ (pugdāmā), Hebrew פִּתְגָּם (piṯgām).
