[edit]From Proto-Hellenic *hréumə, likely inherited from Proto-Indo-European *sréwmn̥, from *srew- (“to flow”) + *-mn̥; equivalent to ῥέω (rhéō, “to flow”) + -μα (-ma). Compare the related Proto-Indo-European *srówmos, whence also Old English stream. See also ῥυθμός (rhuthmós).
