[edit]From Middle High German gneist (“spark”), from Old High German gneisto (“spark”), from Proto-Germanic *gahnaistô (“spark”), from *ga- + *hnaistô (“spark”), perhaps from the ultimate source of knistern (“to crackle”).[1]
