Usage notes

• With the archaic forms in -es, -e, -en, the otherwise silent /t/ is pronounced.
• The spelling Porträt has been the prescribed spelling since the German spelling reform of 1996 (the Rechtschreibreform). In the affected areas, the previous spelling (Portrait) is now less common, and may be regarded as a misspelling, except in countries where the source language of the loanword is co-official (such as French in Switzerland).
