Proto-Finnic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Unknown:

  • Possibly an irregular reflex of Proto-Uralic *towe (lake), from which the shape **too would be predicted. The development *t > *s could have been motivated by avoidance of homonymy with the pronoun *too; but compare also *sulka (feather) < Proto-Uralic *tulka.[1]
  • Alternatively possibly an early borrowing from Pre-Germanic *soygw-ó-/*soygw-í-.[2]
  • The word could be in some relationship to Proto-Samic *suońō (swamp), yet here the contraction to a monosyllable would be irregular.

Noun

*soo[3]

  1. swamp, marsh, bog
