[edit]From Proto-Germanic *ubetą or *ubatją, from *uba- + *etaną (“to eat”)[1] or *atjaną (“to cause to eat; to pasture, graze”), respectively, compare *fraetan (“to devour, consume”). Presumably related to Proto-Slavic *ovoťe (“fruit”).
