[edit]Depth of coverage
[edit]Wiktionary purports to document the vocabularies of languages bar ghost words and protologisms which barely live outside of lists of words or a familiar circle—items yet only intended or mistaken to be used rather than effectively used.
Discovery procedures
[edit]In the event that a dispute arises about whether an item fulfils these criteria, they are satisfied if it be shown that
- the use is manifestly widespread
- otherwise, it consistently appears on the internet
- its meaning-bearing presence is secured in a manner which is apposite for the nature of the language and variety the lexical feature is claimed for.
Conveying meaning
[edit]- change the title to Bearing meaning
- remove the sentence “For example, an appearance in someone’s online dictionary is suggestive, but it does not show the word actually used to convey meaning.”
Number of citations
[edit]For languages well-documented on the internet, use in permanently recorded media in at least three independent instances spanning at least a year is apposite, unless the varietal nature of the lexical item suggests that the item surface differently.
