Depth of coverage

[edit]

Wiktionary purports to document the vocabularies of languages bar ghost words and protologisms which barely live outside of lists of words or a familiar circle—items yet only intended or mistaken to be used rather than effectively used.

Discovery procedures

[edit]

In the event that a dispute arises about whether an item fulfils these criteria, they are satisfied if it be shown that

  1. the use is manifestly widespread
  2. otherwise, it consistently appears on the internet
  3. its meaning-bearing presence is secured in a manner which is apposite for the nature of the language and variety the lexical feature is claimed for.

Conveying meaning

[edit]
  • change the title to Bearing meaning
  • remove the sentence “For example, an appearance in someone’s online dictionary is suggestive, but it does not show the word actually used to convey meaning.”

Number of citations

[edit]

For languages well-documented on the internet, use in permanently recorded media in at least three independent instances spanning at least a year is apposite, unless the varietal nature of the lexical item suggests that the item surface differently.
