Etymology

Both the neighbourhood and the former municipality are named after the river Zederik, a hydronym of unknown etymology. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *ser (stream, flow) or a substantivation of Middle Dutch serich (inflamed, festering).
