From Middle Dutch bende, from Old French bende from Frankish *bindā, *bindu, from Proto-Germanic *bindō, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰendʰ- (to tie; bond, band). Cognate with Old English binde (band, wreath, ribbon), Old High German binta (band, bandage, string), Middle Dutch bende (band, buoy, fetter).
