From Middle English bistrewen, from Old English bestrēawian, bestrēowian (to bestrew, besprinkle), equivalent to be- +‎ strew. Cognate with Dutch bestrooien (to sprinkle, bestrew), German bestreuen (to sprinkle, cover), Swedish beströ (to strew, sprinkle, scatter).
