From Persian بدتر (badtar), comparative form of Persian بد. Compare Ottoman Turkish بتر (beter).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [beˈtær]
  • Hyphenation: be‧tər

Adverb

[edit]

betər

  1. worse [with ablative ‘than’]
    1. more unfavorable; more negative; more good
Bu ölümdən də betərdir. This is worse than dying.
      • 1981, “Ala gözlüm”, Nigar Rəfibəyli (lyrics), Emin Sabitoğlu (music), performed by Akif İslamzadə:
        Ayrılıqdan betər dünyada nə var?
What is worse in the world than being apart?
    2. more severe, more urgent, more extreme
Sən məndən də betərmişsən ki!Turns out, you're even worse than me!

Usage notes

[edit]
  • A sentence such as 'John drives worse than Mary' cannot be translated using betər, since Yəhya Məryəmdən betər sürür implies that Mary drives bad but John drives even worse. If no such meaning is intended, daha pis is used instead: Yəhya Məryəmdən daha pis sürür.
