[edit]From Proto-Slavic *bujь (“mad, foolish”). Cognate with Upper Sorbian bujny, Czech bujný (“lush”), Old Church Slavonic боуи (bui, “stupid”), and Russian бу́йный (bújnyj, “impetuous, unbridled”).
