From Proto-Brythonic *ölin, from Proto-Celtic *olīnā (elbow; angle), from Proto-Indo-European *Heh₃l- (to bend). Cognate with Welsh elin, Breton ilin, Scottish Gaelic uileann, Irish uillinn; non-Celtic cognates include Latin ulna, Ancient Greek ὠλένη (ōlénē).
