- including the contemporary territories of the Federal Republic of Germany (that is both the former West Germany and East Germany)
- (historical, archaic since circa 1975) including the territories of the German Reich as of 1937
- (historical, archaic since circa 1950) including all continuous areas of German-speaking majority in Europe (though often without Switzerland)
