[edit]Etymology
[edit]Expected form is gælde, now obsolete. The current form originates likely from a Funen dialectal gjalde, gjalle.
From Old Danish gællæ, *giallæ, from Old Norse gella, gjalla, from Proto-Germanic *gellaną (“to shout”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰel- (“to shout”).
