Etymology

Borrowed from Yiddish ה (hey) +‎ -tje, from Hebrew ה, the fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The kwartje had a value of five stuivers (each stuiver being worth 5 cents, for a total of 25 cents per kwartje). Compare the obsolete vijfje for the same coin.
