Etymology

From Middle High German hērlich, from Old High German hērlīh, equivalent to hehr (sublime, noble) +‎ -lich, with the first element remodelled after Herr already during OHG; cf. the same development in Herrschaft and herrschen. Cognate with Dutch heerlijk (delicious, lovely, delightful). More at hoar, -ly.
