[edit]From Proto-Nuclear Polynesian *fifi (compare with Maori whiwhi “to entangle, to wrap around”, Tahitian fifi “chain”)[1] related to Proto-Oceanic *pisi (compare with Tongan fifi “tangled, intricate, complicated”, Samoan fisi “entwine” and Fijian vici “to bind, to coil”).[2][3]
